Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2016 An Abstract of the Thesis of Daniel Bromfield for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the School of Journalism and Communications to be taken June 2016 Title: Rock Music's Crusade Of Authenticity Prof. Thomas Wheeler This thesis attempts to define rock music's standards of authenticity and explore their origins. Included are comparison of rock's standards of authenticity to those of other genres and an exploration of how authenticity has been perceived throughout the history of rock music. This study argues that rock's standards of authenticity are unusual among pop music genres in that they entail artists both writing their own songs and playing their own instruments. This is in contrast to genres like hip hop, contemporary pop, and R&B, which have their own quite different standards of authenticity. Quotes from rock fans, critics, and musicians are used to provide insight into rock's standards of authenticity and how they developed over time. ii Acknowledgements I would like to first and foremost thank my father for introducing me to music.     BEATLES HISTORY – PART ONE: 1956–1964 January 1956–June 1957: The ‘Skiffle Craze’ In January 1956, Lonnie Donegan’s recording of “Rock Island Line” stormed into the British hit parade and started what would become known as the ‘skiffle craze’ in Great Britain (vgl. McDevitt 1997: 3). Skiffle was originally an amateur jazz style comprising elements of blues, gospel, and work songs. The instrumentation resembled New Or- leans street bands called ‘spasms,’ which relied on home-made instru- ments. Before skiffle was first professionally recorded by American jazz musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, it had been performed at ‘rent parties’ in North American cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Many African- American migrant workers organized rent parties in order to raise money for their monthly payments (vgl. Garry 1997: 87). Skiffle provided the musical entertainment at these parties, as everybody was able to partici- pate in the band, which usually consisted of home-made acoustic guitars or a piano backed by a rhythm section of household instruments, such as a washboard, a washtub bass, and a jug (vgl. McDevitt 1997:16). Jazz trumpeter and guitarist Ken Colyer pioneered the skiffle scene in Great Britain. In 1949, he formed the Crane River Jazz Band in Cran- ford, Middlesex, together with Ben Marshall (guitar), Pat Hawes (wash- board), and Julian Davies (bass). Their repertoire included skiffle songs “to illustrate aspects of the roots of jazz and to add variety to a pro- gramme” (Dewe 1998: 4). After leaving the group in 1951, Colyer mi- grated to the United States to work with jazz musicians in New Orleans.

Spring has begun in this part of the world and so many little flowers in the park and working some hours to make the garden spring ready. But I also did a lot of researching and writing articles for some magazines as well as working on this report. Thanks a lot for sending in your comments, questions and more. There was so much coming in, that there’s enough for two editions. Therefore I’ve dropped the plan starting a new series from this edition. First let’s start with some of the many e mails. Here’s one from Andrew Matthews, who wrote: ‘Hi Hans, just a note to say thanks for the most enjoyable radio reports which I look forward to reading every month (or so!). I was particularly taken with the young lady who now owns ( ?) the Norderney radio ship and how she had been able to purchase ex-watery wireless broadcasting kit.     The basics of songwriting Copyright International Songwriters' Association 2005, 2009 This long article covers lyric writers, songwriting collaborators, non-performing songwriters, songwriting methods, demos and tip sheets I write lyrics only. Is there any market for lyrics or words on their own, without music? There is no certain market for lyrics on their own. Publishers are usually only interested in complete songs - that is to say words and music. They are usually not interested in words on their own, and indeed are very rarely interested in music on its own, although there is a specialised market for good instrumental music. Will the publisher arrange for you to work with a music collaborator, if he likes your lyrics? Rarely. It is most unusual for this to happen in real life. The publisher is not in the match-making business. He is not in business to pair you off with suitable partners, nor is he in business to provide you with a melody for your lyrics. Indeed, you should be extremely wary of any person calling himself a publisher who offers to provide a melody for your lyrics, as you may find that he will only do so for a fee. What you are saying seems to suggest that lyric writers have very little value in today’s music industry. No, that’s not what I meant. Indeed, I was recently looking at some comments made by various music publishers about songwriting in the nineties, and one of them, Dennis Collopy, one of the most respected music publishers in Britain, said that whatever about non-performing songwriters, good lyricists will always find work, and I think that is perfectly true.
