Summary Human rights of many LGBT people across the globe are being abused, for instance in Egypt, Azerbaijan and Chechnya. Arrests, imprisonment and mistreatment are common examples, and discrimination is even more widespread. LGBT rights are not fully protected in all the British Overseas Territories. Homosexual acts in private between consenting adults were decriminalised under the United Kingdom's Caribbean Territories (Criminal Law) Order 2000. This illustrates that in exceptional circumstances the UK is prepared to impose social reform on the Overseas Territories.

  • Between High Autonomy and Sovereign Control in a Subnational Island Jurisdiction: the Paradox of Hong Kong Under ‘One Country, Two Systems’
Island Studies Journal, 15(1), 131-150 Between high autonomy and sovereign control in a subnational island jurisdiction: The paradox of Hong Kong under ‘One Country, Two Systems’ Samson Yuen Department of Political Science, Lingnan University, Hong Kong [email protected] Edmund W. Cheng Department of Public Policy, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong [email protected] (corresponding author) Abstract: Hong Kong’s ‘One Country, Two Systems’ formula has been hailed as an unprecedented political experiment in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for how it formulates a semi-autonomous jurisdiction within a unitary, single-party state. While the formula has remained constitutionally valid two decades after its implementation, it has been trapped in a tense relationship in actual practice. This article considers the city as a subnational island jurisdiction (SNIJ) and examines its scope for autonomy within and under an authoritarian sovereign state. It argues that the PRC’s central government, prompted by the city’s rising pro-democracy activism and its nascent pro-independence force, has put intensifying emphasis on the ‘one country’ principle by blurring the boundaries between the offshore enclave and the mainland through economic integration, connective infrastructures and legal harmonization. As a result, there is an increasingly blurred line between the ‘two systems’, structured and fostered by the enormous cross-border capital and people flow, although at times moderated and slowed down by local capitalist imperatives and social activism to resist homogenization. Our findings suggest that the contestation between autonomy and sovereign control cannot be read in purely constitutional terms but must be considered within the changing socioeconomic and legal context.

  • From AIDS to Assimilation: Representations of Male Homosexuality in Swedish Literature
From AIDS to Assimilation: Representations of Male Homosexuality in Swedish Literature Timothy Ryan Warburton A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: Ann-Charlotte Gavel Adams, Chair Ia Dübois Andrew Nestingen Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Scandinavian Studies ©Copyright 2014 Timothy Ryan Warburton University of Washington Abstract From AIDS to Assimilation: Representations of Male Homosexuality in Swedish Literature Timothy Ryan Warburton Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Ann-Charlotte Gavel Adams, Barbro Osher Endowed Professor of Swedish Studies Department of Scandinavian Studies This dissertation examines representations of male homosexuality in Swedish literature from 1968-2013. Since the initial visibility of homosexuality with the coming-out of Bengt Martin on Swedish television in 1968, dominant gay rights discourses in Sweden have been characterized by internal dissent over the “proper” image of male homosexuality. Rather than tracing is origins to the Stonewall Inn Riots of 1969, this dissertation focuses on the AIDS crisis as a crucial and pivotal turning point in the history of homosexuality, and as playing an integral role in the shaping of contemporary discourses on male homosexuality. The project expands the history of homosexuality in Sweden beyond legislative milestones, and analyzes key sociopolitical moments in Swedish history in order to locate the literary representations into a broader context. This study is organized into four chapters that examine the literary representations of male homosexuality. The first two chapters of this study offer analyzes of the literary history as iii well as the political and legal discourses through which ideas about homosexuality were circulated.

He spent his final years at Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, a little Victorian fisherman’s hut in Kent. The space hangs off the barren edge of England, shrouded in the shadow of a nuclear power station. The garden, perhaps Jarman’s most intimate work of art, is still alive today: dotted with rosemary, marigold and irises, the Earth conjured into a sculpture.
