It’s quite strange to write my Chairman’s chat when we haven’t had a club meeting or the Drive it Day (social Run and Treasure Hunt). We have had to cancel our Problems and Solutions club night this month and also the presentation of David Smith and Peter Roca with Honorary Membership of the club, hopefully we will be able to make these awards at a meeting later this year when things have returned to normal. We have also had to cancel The Wirral Classic Car Show for this year, which was to take place on the 10th May, I have sent out an email to the people who returned entry forms, informing them of the cancellation and also to Andrew Pimbley at Claremont Farm. As a group we have been active on “Facebook” and now have 128 members a big thanks to John Cartlidge for organising the quizzes and all those members who have taken the time and made the effort to respond and add interesting articles, photos and comments. We have had a good response to our request for unusual photos of your car and/or components at the time of writing and there is still time to enter before the closing date of 11th May when the Committee and John Cartlidge will hopefully agree on a winner, providing the situation allows a bottle of wine will be delivered to their home. David Boumphrey has been tirelessly working away on the Newsletter and also offering his services to members who have not been able to publish their photos for the above-mentioned competition. If you have any ideas for keeping us all amused or have a story, anecdote or just something you may feel will be interesting to members give me or David a bell, alternatively add it to our Facebook site. Please take care to add to The Wirral Classic Car Club Site as there is another site with a similar name Wirral Classic Cars Club which is nothing to do with us. If you wish to contact other members their contact details are in the Handbook. Best wishes Ralph Wilson Page 2 2020 MEMBERSHIP The membership numbers for 2020 now stands at 126 with no new members from last month. Page 4 NEWS FROM THE FEDERATION In issue 5 2019 of the News there are a few articles which may be of interest to members: These have been copied on these pages. A full copy and back issues of the News can be seen by Clicking Here. The latest copy of the NEWS is Issue 2 2020 in either PDF or DOC format. General Welcome to the new non-EU Britain! (Although at the moment it feels very much like the old EU one.) This quarter brings further developments which have an impact on historic vehicles, and again a period where there is little clarity about the future. Clean Air Zones & Low Emission Zones Clean Air Zones, Low Emission Zones or Ultra Low Emission Zones, which I am increasingly referring to as CAZ/LEZ remain proposed for many areas, and the future seems to include a myriad of road user restrictions all enforced by Automatic Number plate Recognition [ANPR] and civil penalty charges [PCN’s]. No further significant developments to CAZ/LEZ have been published. York has claimed a “voluntary LEZ” as a result of agreeing with all local bus operators to use low emission buses in the historic city centre, and Harrow, currently outside the North Circular and therefore outside the planned extended London ULEZ have indicated their interest in extending the ULEZ to their borough, subject to getting funding to do so. Bradford has published an early-stage proposal to introduce a Low Emission Zone but excluding cars and motorcycles. We are currently looking at this and will be responding. There have been several on-line checking systems introduced. Transport for London have a checking system for their ULEZ although this is known to be inaccurate at times, and doesn’t include some London Authorities plans to introduce “school run” car bans around London schools, or to impose raised charges for having resident’s parking permits where non-compliant older cars are parked on the street.

  • Wessex Ways’ February 2020
WESSEX VEHICLE PRESERVATION CLUB FOUNDED 1971 www.wvpc.org.uk ‘WESSEX WAYS’ FEBRUARY 2020 VEHICLE OF THE MONTH The Austin Cambridge (sold as A40, A50, A55, and A60) is a motor car range produced by the Austin Motor Company, in several generations, from September 1954 through to 1971 as cars and to 1973 as light commercials. It replaced the A40 Somerset and was entirely new, with modern unibody construction. The range had two basic body styles with the A40, A50, and early A55 using a traditional rounded shape and later A55 Mark IIs and A60s using Pininfarina styling. The A40 number was re-used on a smaller car (the Austin A40 Farina) from 1958 to 1968, and the Cambridge name had previously been used to designate one of the available body styles on the pre-war 10 hp range. The Austin Cambridge was initially offered only with a four-passenger, four-door saloon body, although a few pre-production two-door models were also made. It had a modern body design with integrated wings and a full-width grille. Independent suspension was provided at the front by coil springs and wishbones while a live axle with anti-roll bar was retained at the rear. A van derivative introduced in November 1956 and a coupé utility (pick up) introduced in May 1957 and remained available until 1974, some three years after the demise of the cars on which they had been based. A40 CAMBRIDGE A 1.2-litre straight-four pushrod engine B-Series engine based on the one used in the previous Austin Somerset (although sharing no parts) powered the new Austin Cambridge.

November / December 2018 Presidential Musings 2017 – 2018 Elected Officers President: By the time you get this the Holidays will be over. Hope you and your cars got all Don Henderson [email protected] the goodies that you deserve and that everybody has a safe and happy season. Looking forward, it is time to send in your membership renewal. Please do this Secretary ASAP. Sharon Kalinowski [email protected] Through bin-host I informed the membership about our club officer nominations Treasurer/Membership and nobody wanted to volunteer. Glen has stepped down as Vice President and Calvin Jackson that office is now vacant. Calvin will continue as our treasurer. I will stay as Pres- [email protected] ident until somebody else would be willing to step up to the plate. Southern Chapter At the beginning of the year I suggested that the Northern Chapter set up meet- President ings at locations and times that were convenient to them, nothing happened. The Bill Tattersall turnout for Delaware City from our own club members was very poor. Sadly the [email protected] Northern Chapter could not get the minimum of 20 participants for a Christmas Treasurer Party. It makes no financial sense to spend over $500 on a party for less than a Jerry Hirst dozen people. It is time for somebody to pick a direction for the Northern Chap- [email protected] ter. This is not MY club it is OUR club. Secretary / Publicity Mike Tyler The Dec 1 Christmas Market at Poplar Hall was [email protected] loads of fun despite the mud.
