  • Predatory and Parasitic Lepidoptera: Carnivores Living on Plants
Journal of the Lepidopterists' Society 49(4), 1995, 412-453 PREDATORY AND PARASITIC LEPIDOPTERA: CARNIVORES LIVING ON PLANTS NAOMI E. PIERCE Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02138, USA ABSTRACT. Moths and butterflies whose larvae do not feed on plants represent a decided minority slice of lepidopteran diversity, yet offer insights into the ecology and evolution of feeding habits. This paper summarizes the life histories of the known pred atory and parasitic lepidopteran taxa, focusing in detail on current research in the butterfly family Lycaenidae, a group disproportionately rich in aphytophagous feeders and myr mecophilous habits. More than 99 percent of the 160,000 species of Lepidoptera eat plants (Strong et al. 1984, Common 1990). Plant feeding is generally associated with high rates of evolutionary diversification-while only 9 of the 30 extant orders of insects (Kristensen 1991) feed on plants, these orders contain more than half of the total number of insect species (Ehrlich & Raven 1964, Southwood 1973, Mitter et al. 1988, cf. Labandiera & Sepkoski 1993). Phytophagous species are characterized by specialized diets, with fewer than 10 percent having host ranges of more than three plant families (Bernays 1988, 1989), and butterflies being particularly host plant-specific (e.g., Remington & Pease 1955, Remington 1963, Ehrlich & Raven 1964). This kind of life history specialization and its effects on population structure may have contributed to the diversification of phytophages by promoting population subdivision and isolation (Futuyma & Moreno 1988, Thompson 1994). Many studies have identified selective forces giving rise to differences in niche breadth (Berenbaum 1981, Scriber 1983, Rausher 1983, Denno & McClure 1983, Strong et al.

[email protected] ABSTRACT. Composition of the Arctiidae species (Lepidoptera) in southern Brazil: relationship among vegetation types and among habitat spatial configuration. We describe the beta-diversity pattern of the Arctiidae in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS) and assess whether this pattern is related to similarities in vegetation type or geographic distance among areas. We analysed 9420 specimens in 13 scientific collections, as well as two published checklists. Three hundred twenty nine arctiid species were recorded for 55 localities. This richness corresponded to 5.6% of the Neotropical fauna, and 16.5% of the estimated Brazilian fauna. Fifty two species (15.8%) were recorded for the first time in the state. There was no relationship between beta-diversity (Sorensen distance) and geographic distance among the localities, suggesting that the spatial configuration of the habitat did not influence significantly the locomotion of the Arctiidae moths among landscapes. The multivariate analysis suggested that the Arctiidae fauna differ among vegetation types. The composition of the fauna at the Floresta Ombrófila Mista (Araucaria forest) is very distinct from other vegetation type faunas.

Plants of The Week » Annual - Ornamental Pepper (Capsicum annuum) Ornamental peppers are great plants for adding a burst of bright color in the garden during the fall. Fruits range in color from white, yellow, orange, red, to black. Peppers ripen at different stages so one plant can have multiple colors providing more visual impact from just one plant. Another cool feature is that the fruit of this plant is borne upright and typically sits above the foliage. Due to recent breeding efforts there are many cultivars available. A common question that people ask is whether or not the peppers are edible. The peppers are indeed edible, but some cultivars are extremely hot, so proceed with caution! Some interesting cultivars include, ꞌSangria,ꞌ a mounding plant with orange, yellow, and red fruit; ꞌCalico,ꞌ a green, cream and purple variegated foliage variety; and ꞌMedusa,ꞌ a compact plant that has twisted fruits with yellow, orange to red fruit. These plants can withstand most soil conditions, but they need full sun. AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Sarote Panasahatham for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology presented on November 18, 1994. Title : Cereal Stem Moth. Ochsenheimeria vacculella Fischer von Roslerstamm (Lepidoptera : Ochsenheimeriidae): Field Biology and Larval Development on Selected Grasses and Cereals in Western Oregon Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved : Glenn C. Fier The seasonal life history of the cereal stem moth (CSM), Ochsenheimeria vacculella Fischer von Roslerstanun, (Lepidoptera : Ochsenheimeriidae) was investigated in a commercial field of annual ryegrass in the Willamette Valley, OR from January 1993 to August 1994. Phenology of life stages, effect of temperature on eclosion, and development of larvae on potential hosts of economic importantce were also studied. First records of parasitization and effects of cultural practices on this potential pest in annual ryegrass were reported. CSM is a recent introduction to North America from a monobasic family of the Palearctic region. Its life cycle is functionally univoltine in commercial ryegrass seed fields. Eggs are characteristically deposited on interior wooden walls, ceilings and straw bales or piles in outbuildings from June through September. Eclosion occurs bimodally with approximately fifty percent of current season eggs hatching in late June and July. The remainder overwinter and hatch in February and March. Larvae ballooned from oviposition sites to potential hosts and were found in annual ryegrass from February to early June. First instar larvae typically mine leaves; later stadia are stem borers. Variance to mean ratios of larvae sampled in annual ryegrass described a clumped population. Pupation occured from late May to early July. The pupa was enclosed in a flimsy cocoon usually located on the inside of a flag leaf's sheath.

The Atlantic Forest is considered a biodiversity hotspot for conservation, because its fauna and flora are highly endemic and suffer from loss of natural habitats. This study assessed the composition and diversity of tiger moths (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) in two floristic formations of the southern Atlantic Forest (grassland and Araucaria forest) and in a transition zone (forest edge). The moths were attracted to UV light reflected onto a white sheet. A total of 3,574 tiger moths were collected, representing 121 species. The rarefaction curves showed that the tiger-moth assemblage col- lected in the grassland was more diverse than the assemblages from the Araucaria forest and the transition zone. The assemblages in the forest and forest edge resembled each other, whereas the grassland assemblage was distinct. The composition of the tiger-moth assemblages was related to the environmental characteristics [habitat type (grassland, edge, or forest), altitude, temperature, air relative humidity] and the location of the sites.

These species have a great importance to in natura fruits consumption, industrialization, medicinal use and also as ornamental plants. The different Passiflora species are host of a great diversity of arthropods that can cause injuries, economic damages and, in some situations, the plant death. Among the arthropods, leafhopper caterpillars are considered frequent and severe pests in the main passion fruit producing regions. The present work is an occurrence report of Isia alcumena and Spodoptera cosmioides attacking passion fruit plants (Passiflora edulis Sims) in the Federal District, Brazil.
