Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

Native pollinators in the Credit River watershed co-evolved with the native plants in the region. Pollen from the stamen (male part of the flower) is transferred to the pistol (female part of the flower) allowing a plant to produce seeds that become the next generation. The transfer of pollen almost always requires an outside influence, such as wind or animals. Animals that help pollinate flowers are known as pollinators. All flowering plant species produce pollen, a source of protein for many insects. Many flowers also produce nectar, a sugar-based high energy food. Entomol. 34(2): 403Ð409 (2005) ABSTRACT This paper links ecological theory to the biological control of insect pests in banana plantations. Through an established predictive approach, ecological data on tritrophic interactions from natural systems were used to formulate simple recommendations for biological control in banana plantations. The speciÞc goals were (1) to determine the most effective parasitoid enemies for biological control of lepidopteran larvae in banana plantations and (2) to examine the impact of nematicides on enemy populations. To assess percent parasitism, we reared 1,121 lepidopteran larvae collected from six plantations managed under two nematicide regimens. Attack by parasitoids in the families Tachinidae (Diptera), Braconidae, Eulophidae, and Chalcididae (Hymenoptera) closely paralleled rates reported for species with similar characteristics in lowland wet forests, and statistical models predicted the relative importance of these parasitoids as sources of mortality. We found that tachinid ßies were the most important source of early instar larval parasitism in banana plantations, and their importance increased with more intensive nematicide applications. The statistical models that we derived from data on natural systems were useful in predicting which parasitoids would be important in banana and which larval characteristics they would preferentially attack. This approach could be used in other managed ecosystems where the identiÞcation of effective biological control agents is needed. Scott, Ph.D. in entomology University of California Berkeley, 1972 (e-mail: [email protected]) Abstract. Ernest John Oslar collected more than 50,000 butterflies and moths and other insects and sold them to many taxonomists and museums throughout the world. This paper attempts to determine his travels in America to collect those specimens, by using data from labeled specimens (most in his remaining collection but some from published papers) plus information from correspondence etc. and a few small field diaries preserved by his descendants. The butterfly specimens and their localities/dates in his collection in the C. P. Gillette Museum (Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado) are detailed. This information will help determine the possible collection locations of Oslar specimens that lack accurate collection data. Many more biographical details of Oslar are revealed, and the 26 insects named for Oslar are detailed. Introduction The last collection of Ernest J. Oslar, ~2159 papered butterfly specimens and several moths, was found in the C. P. Gillette Museum, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado by Paul A. Opler, providing the opportunity to study his travels and collections. Scott & Fisher (2014) documented specimens sent by Ernest J. Oslar of about 100 Argynnis (Speyeria) nokomis nokomis Edwards labeled from the San Juan Mts. and Hall Valley of Colorado, which were collected by Wilmatte Cockerell at Beulah New Mexico, and documented Oslar’s specimens of Oeneis alberta oslari Skinner labeled from Deer Creek Canyon, [Jefferson County] Colorado, September 25, 1909, which were collected in South Park, Park Co. -
Summer's the Season for Some Plant Swappin' It's Great to Be a Florida
THE PAWPAW PRESS Newsletter of the Pawpaw Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society: July–Aug 2019 Summer’s the season for some plant swappin’ The chapter’s annual plant swap and walk is always one of its most popular events, despite occurring in the most swampy, sultry month of the year. Armed with plant lists complete with some pictures, the group surveyed the paths in search of the plants listed. Along the way, Warren conducted plant identifications and provided interesting information about the plants. The swap itself was held under the shade of a pavilion. Members brought a variety of plants and introduced the plants they brought as well as sharing some growing tips. We were delighted to welcome several new people to the group and to be able to send native plants home with these new plant enthusiasts. We even had a local neighbor stop by while on a bike ride! After four rounds of “swapping,” lots of folks went home with new “trea- sures” and smiles on their faces. It’s great to be a Florida propagator! It’s time to start collecting those wildflower seeds for next year’s wildflower seed packets, and we need your help. Please label your containers or bags of seeds with the your name, the plant name, the date collected and where collected. -

Introduction and Purpose Ottawa Sands, Ottawa County Parks, consists of 345 acres including an 80-acre inland lake, natural forests, coastal dunes, intermittent wetlands, inundated shrub swamp, and riparian marsh, shrub, and swamp communities. The eleven natural plant communities occurring on the site are listed along with hundreds of associated plant and animal species. - Ottawa Sands is located near the mouth of the Grand River in sections 17, 18 and 20 of Spring Lake Township, Ottawa County, in Western Michigan. - Property includes 5,585 feet of Grand River frontage. - A Floristic Quality Assessment demonstrates that a diverse and extremely high-quality plant component exists at Ottawa Sands. Purpose - To gain an understanding of the vegetative plant communities and flora of western Ottawa County and central west Michigan area.
