Architectural Temperance: Spain and Rome, 1700-1759
Architectural Temperance Spain and Rome, 1700–1759 Architectural Temperance examines relations between Bourbon Spain and papal Rome (1700–1759) through the lens of cultural politics. With a focus on key Spanish architects sent to study in Rome by the Bourbon Kings, the book also discusses the establishment of a program of architectural educa- tion at the newly-founded Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Victor Deupi explores why a powerful nation like Spain would temper its own building traditions with the more cosmopolitan trends associated with Rome; often at the expense of its own national and regional traditions. Through the inclusion of previously unpublished documents and images that shed light on the theoretical debates which shaped eighteenth-century architecture in Rome and Madrid, Architectural Temperance provides an insight into readers with new insights into the cultural history of early modern Spain. Victor Deupi teaches the history of art and architecture at the School of Architecture and Design at the New York Institute of Technology and in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University. His research focuses on cultural politics in the early modern Ibero-American world. (030/21) Santa Cecilia in Trastevere Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is a 9th century monastic and titular church and minor basilica dedicated to St Cecilia, 2nd or 3rd century Roman martyr and patron of musicians. 1 h History: The church is located in what was the most densely inhabited part of Trastevere in early Roman times; its large population mainly due to its proximity to the river Tiber. Where there are now convent buildings there were once four Roman streets surrounding a domus, above which the church was built. It is in the domus that the titulus of a Christian woman named Cecilia was housed. The river would have provided the domus with water for its bathhouse and tannery. j The account of Cecilia stated that she had persuaded her husband Valerian to be baptized. He was subsequently put to death, along with his brother, Tiburtius, and a man named Maximus. Cecilia was then taken before the prefect and sentenced to death by way of suffocation in the caldorinm of her own bathhouse. When this treatment failed to kill her, a soldier was sent to behead her but he struck three blows without succeeding, and she died of the wounds three days later. The remains of the executed men are known to have been buried in the Catacomb of St Praetextatus but the truth of the account and their connection with it is uncertain. 6 h j A sanctuary was built on the house of her husband, Valerianus. This became the ancient Titulus Ceciliae, one of the original twenty-five parishes of Rome. -

Sebastiano Conca (Gaeta 1680 - Naples 1764) The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist oil on canvas 75 x 62 cm (29½ x 24⅜ in) in a very rare silver plated Roman 18th-century frame Sebastiano Conca painted numerous pictures of the Virgin and Child, varying the usual pyramidal format. In The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist he composes the three central figures of the Virgin, the infant Jesus and a young John the Baptist, with Joseph in the shadowy background. Our attention is drawn to the gaze and relationship between the two children, Jesus and John. The young John presents the Infant Child with a cutting from the vine. Though it is John who gives the vine to Jesus, the Infant Child appears both to accept the vine, and in turn appears to present it back to John. The vine is the root and source of wine, which in turn is symbolic of the blood shed by Christ. This acceptance by the Infant Child may represent an acknowledgment and reference to his destiny, ‘I am the true vine’ John 15:1. The vine is also a symbol of God’s relationship with his people and therefore it is appropriate that the Infant Child and the young John the Baptist share and hold the vine together. The book held by the Virgin is the book of the Wisdom, and marks the Virgin as 'Mater Serpientiae,' the Mother of Wisdom. Conca repeated the motif of 'Mater Serpientiae' in a small copper version of the Holy Family. -

Lawrence, Vittoriosa) The Reverenda Fabbrica di S. Pietro in the Maltese Islands The Office and Tribunal of the Reverenda Fabbrica in Malta and Gozo were the fourth judicial power in the Maltese Archipelago for nearly two centuries (1626-1798). The Sacred Congregation of the Reverenda Fabbrica in the Vatican established its Tribunal in Malta with Nicola Mangione, a meticulous jurist and consultant of Grand Master Lascaris, as its Commissioner, in order to see that all pious legacies were fulfilled and to raise funds for the building and embellishment of the Vatican Basilica. It enjoyed full executive powers over all the inhabitants of Malta and Gozo, including the familiares of the Bishop and of the Inquisitor, the Religious Orders and all the members of the Order of Saint John, the Sovereign rulers of the islands. Its ministers and officials were exempt persons from all existing powers. At times great conflicts of power had to be decided by the Holy See. By means of the Brief of Alexander VII (19 May 1655), formerly Inquisitor of Malta as Fabio Chigi, the Tribunal was united to that of the Holy Inquisition, though the Fabbrica maintained its autonomy of judgement in two instances: it kept its own Chancery and Depositeria:the Inquisitor pro tempore became the Deputy of the Congregation and its Commissioner;. -

Claudio De Dominicis AGGIUNTE E VARIAZIONI NELLE PROTETTORIE CARDINALIZIE Roma 2019 Edito per AccademiaMoroniana.it Tutti i diritti riservati all’autore Le immagini potrebbero essere soggette a copyright 2 * INTRODUZIONE * Il titolo si riferisce al libro di De Dominicis Claudio, Repertorio delle protettorie cardinalizie dal 1716 al 1964 , ed. Fondazione Marco Besso, Roma 2009. Ribadisco l’importanza di queste informazioni per chi cerca notizie storiche su un qualsiasi istituto, ecclesiastico o laico, specialmente per gli storici dell’arte. Nell’archivio del cardinale protettore si possono trovare documenti interessanti alla ricerca. Così come, viceversa, documenti riguardanti un cardinale nell’archivio dell’istituto. Gli estremi temporali del libro erano dettati dalla fonte a cui si è attinto, ossia le Notizie per l’anno… , iniziate nel 1716, e dall’anno nel quale tale carica venne abolita, il 1964. Purtroppo tale fonte, primaria se non si considerano i documenti pontifici di incarico, si è dimostrata a volte lacunosa. Non sappiamo con esattezza, ma di certo negli anni 1922-1939, nell’ Annuario Pontificio , successore delle Notizie , è presente l’indice delle protettorie. Questo non vuole essere uno studio scientifico sulla figura e sui compiti del cardinale protettore, per il quale si possono vedere diversi dizionari e gli statuti degli istituti preposti, ma qui voglio riferire un curioso giudizio ritrovato: “Essendosi ultimamente il cardinal Rospigliosi scaricato della protettione dell’Ordine de’ Cappuccini sotto pretesto di non poter à causa della sua indispositione della podagra esercitarne l’impiego, il Papa la diede subito all’Acciaioli dal quale venne non senza qualche ripugnanza abbracciata, dechiarandosi da farlo per aggradire à sua Santità, sapendo benissimo che queste protettioni servono d’un gran rompimento di testa, e non altro, e per lo più di spesa senza utile, se non fosse quello di qualche preghiera”1.
