FONDATORI : fratelli MASERATI. ALFIERI MASERATI : pilota automobilistico ed imprenditore italiano, fondatore della casa automobilistica MASERATI. Nasce a Voghera il 23/09/1887, è il quarto di sette fratelli, il primo Carlo trasmette la la passione per la meccanica ALFIERI, all'età di 12 anni già lavorava in una fabbrica di biciclette, nel 1902 riesce a farsi assumere a Milano dalla ISOTTA FRASCHINI, grazie all'aiuto del fratello Carlo. Alfieri grazie alle sue capacità fa carriera e alle mansioni più umili, riesce ad arrivare fino al reparto corse dell'azienda per poi assistere meccanicamente alla maccina vincente della Targa FLORIO del 1908, la ISOTTA lo manda come tecnico nella filiale argentina di Buenos Aires, poi spostarlo a Londra, e in Francia, infine nel 1914 decide, affiancato dai suoi fratelli. Ettore ed Ernesto, di fondare la MASERAT ALFIERI OFFICINE, pur rimanendo legato al marchio ISOTTA-FRASCHINI, di cui ne cura le vetture da competizione in seguito cura anche i propulsori DIATTO. Intanto però, in Italia scoppia la guerra e la sua attività viene bloccata. Alfieri Maserati, in questo periodo, progetta una candela di accensione per motori, con la quale nasce a Milano la Fabbrica CANDELE MASERATI infine progetta un prototipo con base telaio ISOTTA- FRASCHINI, ottenendo numerose vittorie, seguirà la collaborazione con la DIATTO, infine tra il 1925/26, mesce la mitica MASERATI TIPO 26, rivelandosi poi, un'automobile vincente. Il 1929 sarà l'anno della creazione di una 2 vettura la V43000, con oltre 300 CV, la quale raggiungerà i 246 Km/ h, oltre ad altre mitiche vittorie automobilistiche. -

The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part 1 © October 22, 2014 Page 1 October 22, 2014 AONE PIZZA AND A MOVIE: The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part I -- 1948 through 1959 ©* By Phillip Bostwick Following the enthusiastic response to the showing of the motor racing film Rush at the Josiah Smith Tavern in Weston, Massachusetts last winter, AONE officers invested in additional movie and sound equipment and decided to host two motor racing films during the late fall and winter of 2014-2015. The dates for this winter’s “AONE Pizza and a Movie” events, and the movies to be shown, are: 1. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The Racers, a 1955 film starring Kirk Douglas, Bella Darvi, Gilbert Roland, Cesar Romero, Lee J. Cobb, and Katy Jurado. This movie is a few minutes short of two hours long and pizza will be brought in at the end of the film for an intermission. During the pizza break some excerpts from my collection of motor racing videos will be shown.† This thirty- eight minute special feature will show movies of some 1950s sport car races and some Formula One races in Europe during the fifties. 2. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Grand Prix, a 1966 film starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand and Toshiro Mifune-- directed by John Frankenheimer. This film is a few minutes short of three hours long with an intermission during the film. Pizza will brought in during that intermission. Following the film a short special will be shown which portrays how James Garner and the other movie stars were taught to -

BEHRA–PORSCHE E TEC MEC LA STORIA DI UNA VETTURA NATA TRA LA FRANCIA, L’ITALIA E LA GERMANIA a Behra-Porsche nasce da un’idea del pilota Jean Berha che vuole una Formula 2 costruita su misura per Llui e “Pilotino”. Chiede a Ferry Porsche di poter realizzare la sua vettura con motorizzazione Porsche, usando il telaio 550-0032 ed il motore “Carrera” da 1.500cc. Per farlo si affida a Valerio Colotti che aveva conosciuto quando correva per la Maserati. Valerio Colotti nel 1958, dopo cinque anni nell’ufficio tecnico alla Ferrari ed altri cinque nell’ufficio tecnico della Maserati (dove progetta per la 250F Campione del Mondo di F1 nel 1957 cambio-differenziale, sospen- sioni, sterzo, freni e telaio), decide di mettersi in proprio e fonda a Modena la “Tec-Mec”. Inizia l’attività con il progetto e la costruzione del cambio-differenziale per la Cooper Climax della scuderia di Rob Walker i cui piloti, Maurice Trintignant e Stirling Moss, ne decretano il successo. Nel 1959 progetta laTec-Mec con motore e cambio delle Maserati 250F, una vettura di F1 ora esposta nel museo di Donington. Sempre nello stesso anno, per conto di Jean Behra, progetta la telaistica della Behra-Porsche, vettura che guidò anche Maria Teresa de Filippis nel 1959. Con la morte di Behra il progetto si ferma lì, ma la storia ed i successi di Colotti proseguono, l’affidabilità e le innovazioni tecniche apportate alle sue componentistiche ne decretano il successo in virtù del quale scuderie ufficiali come Cooper, Vanwall, Lotus, Brabham, McLaren, Fergusson e BRM ordinano cambi- differenziali. -

Robertson Crusoe: Tony Maggs, South Africa’s Forgotten GP Ace Greg Mills TONY MAGGS, who died on 2 June 2009, was South Africa’s first Grand Prix ace, earning two second places in the French GPs of 1962 and 1963, two consecutive victories in the Kyalami nine-hour sharing with David Piper, and a number of top- six sportscar finishes including at Le Mans and Sebring. But very few living in the remote Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley, not far from the Robertson wine district would have realised that the man behind the wheel of the silver Toyota bakkie was once his country’s top Formula One driver. More than that, his career quickly scaled great heights, from his first race behind the wheel of an Austin Healey in Cape Town to a works F1 Cooper drive – one of the top three teams of the time – just four years later. Then Maggs disappeared as suddenly as he had arrived on the international scene, preferring life as a farmer and conservationist to the limelight of a F1 star. After a disastrous season in the uncompetitive Centrosud BRM team in 1964, he moved back to South Africa where, following a bad crash at Pietermaritzburg’s Roy Hesketh circuit the following year, he left the sport behind for good. It was, however, a career that might never have been at all. Anthony Francis O’Connell Maggs had been born in Pretoria into a military family. His father, Colonel Eugene Maggs, who had had a distinguished war record notably in the Italian campaign, had expected his son to follow family tradition.
