1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour. -

B. Yeats’ The Second Coming (Under the direction of Prof. Dino S. Cervigni) The following study aims to fill a void in Yeatsian scholarship by in vestigating the under -analyzed link between William Butler Yeats’ late poetic production and the work of the medieval Florentine poet Dante Alighieri (1265 -1321), focusing primarily but not exclusively on Yeats’ poem The Second Coming. An overview of Yeats ’ reception of Dante’s literary corpus highlights a constant and constantly increasing interest in the Florentine poet’s work on the part of the Irish writer. Close attention is paid to the role of Dante in Yeats’ problematic esoteric volume A Vision , both as a ‘character’ within the work itself and as a shaping force behind the famous ‘system’ which the work outlines, and which serves as the theoretical/ideological backbone for all of Yeats’ successive poetic output. Finally, this study attempts a detailed search for Dantean traces in The Second Coming, arguably Yeats’ most read poem and one that has been called an emblem and a microcosm of all his late poetry. -

Bornstein: Yeats's Romantic Dante Yeats's Romantic Dante by GEORGE BORNSTEIN HEN I WAS fifteen or sixteen my father had told me about Ros W setti and Blake and given me their poetry to read; and once at Liverpool on my way to Sligo I had seen Dante's Dream in the gallery there, a picture painted when Rossetti had lost his dramatic power and today not very pleasing to me, and its colour, its people, its romantic architecture had blotted all other pictures away," recalled W. B. Yeats in his autobiography. 1 Yeats responded so deeply not to the earlier watercolor at the Tate Gallery but rather to the later oil version of Dante's Dream at the Time of the Death of Beatrice, Rossetti's largest picture and one of his most important. Chief among its colors were the red and gold which Yeats thought Shelley had imported from Italy for English poetry; chief among its people were the quester poet and his dead beloved, whom henceforth he might apprehend sometimes in vision but could only join permanently in death; and chief among its ele ments of "romantic architecture" was a winding stair spiraling upward at the extreme right. -

India in Yeats’s Early Imagination: Mohini Chatterjee and Kālidāsa Ashim Dutta his essay examines Yeats’s initiatory interest in Indian lore and litera- ture, and their importance to his creative imagination. Rather than functioning as an amateurish poetic experimentation leading to a full- Ter understanding of India in his late years, or to his “real” pursuits of Irish and modernist subjects, Yeats’s early preoccupation with India remains fun- damental to the syncretic spirituality of his thought, blending into the larger literary, cultural, and philosophical enterprises of his life. India, for Yeats, was brought to life for the first time by the Dublin visit of the Bengali Theosophist and Vedāntist Mohini Chatterjee in the mid-1880s. While Chatterjee was a key philosophical influence on Indian matters early in his career, Yeats at that time seems to have also been an enthusiastic reader of the works of the fifth- century Indian poet-playwright Kālidāsa. -

Cornered: Intimate Relations in The Words Upon the Window-Pane Charles I. Armstrong hen Wheels and Butterflies was published by Macmillan in 1934, both the cover and the title page featured an image of three faces clustered together in a circular formation. This image was based Won theatrical masks made by the Dutch artist Hildo van Krop for The Only Jealousy of Emer and subsequently used in a Dublin production of Fighting the Waves (a dance play based on The Only Jealousy of Emer). The masks belong to the characters of the Woman of the Sidhe, Emer, and Cuchulain, and their juxtaposition on the cover reflects the complex love triangle inFighting the Waves.1 Set in intimate proximity, the three partially overlapping faces appear anguished and awkwardly, even forcibly intertwined. Although originally written and staged in 1930, The Words upon the Window-Pane was—like Fighting the Waves—one of the four plays included in the Wheels and Butterflies volume. -

In a number of passages deleted from his plays, we can see Yeats experimenting with these wild profusions of images. In the art historical writings he studied, Yeats found visual analogues to the hodos chameliontos in the world of Persian art. Hodos Chameliontos [John Kavanaugh: v. It is still edited by Warwick Gould, as it has been since he took over from Richard Finneran in 1985. e ethos to which I referred centers on the presentation of detailed re- search ndings in conformity with rigorous scholarly discipline: these ndings preponderantly comprise textual, contextual and biographical information, and over the years Yeats Annual has helped immensely to improve, and oen indeed to build, what one might call the infrastructure of Yeats studies. -

MAKING INTERPRETATIONS: DIGITALLY ADAPTING YEATS'S “EGO DOMINUS TUUS” AS A DIGITAL COMIC A Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts English by Jared Jameson May 2018 Accepted by: David Blakesley, Committee Chair Steve Katz Gabriel Hankins ABSTRACT Through adapting Yeats’s “Ego Dominus Tuus” as a digital comic the close ties between the act of interpretation and the creative process are showcased. The process explores how collaborating with those from other disciplines, in this case graphic arts, can benefit humanities scholars by not only allowing them to bring their interpretations to life through creative means but also by helping them to build and develop those interpretations in ways that may not have been otherwise apparent. In assessing this experience, a strong case can be made for viewing interpretive skills as creative devices, implementing inter- disciplinary collaboration within humanities-based instruction, and recognizing the potential of digital technology as an easily accessible and efficient platform for the production of these types of collaborative projects. -
