Critical Soil Fertility Issues in Alfalfa Production
CRITICAL son... FERTll.ITY ISSUES IN ALFALFA PRODUCnON Roland Do Meyerl ABSTRACT Alfalfa yields are often limited by a lack of adequate amounts of essential plant nutrients. This presentation is intended to assist growers and advisors in assessing the soil fertility and plant nutrient status for the production of high yielding alfalfa. Strategies for understanding the quantities of essential plant nutrients, determining what portion the soils are able to supply and the amount, timing and method of application of necessary fertilizer nutrients will be discussed. High yielding, profitable alfalfa production involves determining when to apply the necessary fertilizer nutrients and soil amendments to insure that adequate nutrients will be available to meet plant growth demand. Developing an appreciation for the large amounts of plant nutrients that are removed by alfalfa and the ability of various soils on the acreage being farmed to supply these quantities will provide the background information of when to apply the needed fertilizers and amendments such as lime or gypsum. Laboratory testing of soil and plant tissue samples can be used as valuable tools to aid in assessing the nutrient status and soil conditions favorable for plant growth. Implementing these strategies will insure that plant nutrient supplies are adequate for producing profitable high yielding alfalfa of good quality for top animal performance. Difference between a PRO and an Association/Society: • PRO: Created by government via legislation to protect public interest. • Association/Society: Created by members to further member interests. • Example: • College of Physicians and Surgeons is a PRO (regulatory mandate; focus on public interest); • Alberta Medical Association is an association (focus on member’s interests); The Agrology Profession Act (APA; 2005) and the Agrology Profession Regulation (APR; 2007) established AIA as a PRO; no part of the APA or APR allows for association activities. Professional regulatory management is based on the premise that the best persons to regulate a profession are practitioners within that profession who understand what it means to be competent in that profession. SADOUGH VANINI* and MOSTAFA AMINI Department of Physical Geography, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran * Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to determine the rate of soil erosion on slopes of differing steepness and its effects on agricultural land and pastures in the drainage basin around Ashan. Exogenous factors like water and wind and endogenous elements such as erodibility of the soil have key roles in erosion and the results of this study will help in the management of soil and soil conservation programs. Soil erosion in the drainage basin around Ashan has accelerated and because of this it is important to determine the erodibility of the soil. In this study, the soil on four different hill slopes was sampled and after drying, soil size distribution and soil texture and the organic content of forty samples, and the k-factor (erodibility) using the USLE equation, were determined. According to the results of the ANOVA test there are strong relationships between the variables, which is illustrated by box plots. The results indicate that erodibility is significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the type of land use and landforms. The highest levels of erosion were recorded on the back-slope and the least at the summit and on the toe-slope. Discriminant function analysis was used to determine the discriminatory power of the erodibility factor associated with the different uses of land and landform components. -

PEEFACE Nearly thirty-nine years ago Dr M. C. Cooke published his " Manual,'' which reached a second edition nine years afterwards. Since then no botanic dictionary has been published in Britain, while during the period which has passed since then botany has undergone a momentous change. While systematic botany has been actively prosecuted, the other departments of morphology, physiology and minute anatomy have been energetically pursued by the help of improved appliances and methods of investigation. One result has been a large increase of technical terms, which are only partially accounted for in the various text-books. The time seemed therefore ripe for a new Glossary which should include these terms, and, encouraged by the help of many botanic friends, I have drawn up the present volume. After the work had been partly written, and announced for publication, Mr Crozier's " Dictionary " first came under my notice. I have consequently compared it with my manuscript, and inserted many words which had not come within my knowledge, or had been rejected by me, as will be seen by the acknowledgment in each case.
