After an eventful night, Porsche is within striking distance of the leading pack with the 911 GT3 R fielded by the customer team KCMG at the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps. The No. 47 car driven by Maxime Martin, his Belgian compatriot Laurens Vanthoor and Britain’s Nick Tandy is currently running in fifth place after 18 hours. After 370 laps on the 7.004-kilometre Grand Prix circuit, the vehicle is just one lap behind the leader. The second best nine-eleven with KCMG drivers Josh Burdon (Australia), Alexandere Imperatori (Switzerland) and Edoardo Liberati (Italy) ranks eleventh. An unfortunate caution phase around midnight cost the armada of 911 GT3 R the direct contact to the leading vehicles. This was followed by a streak of bad luck, which knocked many of the 500+PS sports cars from Weissach out of contention. At around 3am, the No. 22 entry from GPX Racing had to pit for repairs due to a steering problem. At about 5.30am, the car shared by Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and the works driver Matt Campbell (Australia) and Mathieu Jaminet (France) pulled out. Over long stretches during the night, Schnabl Engineering’s 911 GT3 R took over the role as the leading Porsche and maintained a steady pace among the top ten. In 2021, Porsche will make Le Mans history yet again. Taipei-based HubAuto Racing will become the frst Asian team to compete in the LMGTE Pro class when the famous tricolore drops on Saturday afernoon to mark the start of the 89th running of the legendary event. The Pro category has generally been reserved for factory outfts, such as the Porsche GT Team operated by Manthey Racing, with customer teams traditionally competing in LMGTE Am. But this bucking of the trend signals a statement of intent to compete with the best of the best. Founder and Team Principal Morris Chen said he is “immensely proud” of the eforts his team has put in. “What started as a dream has now become a reality,” he added. “We are looking forward to a very competitive race and strong results. We also need to bear in mind our history with Porsche. This strong relationship ensures we are very confdent of taking on the challenges of Le Mans in the Porsche 911 RSR. Second and third were the similarly Michelin-equipped N°8 and N°7 Toyota TS050 Hybrids in the hands of Mike Conway/Kamui Kobayashi/Jose María López and Sébastien Buemi/Kazuki Nakajima/Brendon Hartley respectively. In contrast, the French firm’s LMP2 partners were down on luck in Shanghai. The class’s pole-winning N°42 ORECA 07-Gibson of Cool Racing, Lapierre/Borga/Coigny was halted by Race Control after suffering an electronics problem, while the N°22 United Autosports car of Hanson/Albuquerque/Di Resta lost power after debris got blocked in the air intake of its engine, eliminating it from the scrap for victory. Despite an unscheduled pit stop to cure the problem on Lap 8, it still completed the distance in third place – just 21 seconds short of the winner – to showcase the potential of its Michelin rubber both in qualifying and on race day. The LMGTE Pro class was topped by the N°92 Porsche 911 RSR of Christensen/Estre, ahead of Bruni/Lietz’s N°91 sister car and Aston Martin Racing’s N°97 Vantage AMR (Lynn/Martin).
