This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part 1 © October 22, 2014 Page 1 October 22, 2014 AONE PIZZA AND A MOVIE: The Golden Age of Auto Racing Revisited Part I -- 1948 through 1959 ©* By Phillip Bostwick Following the enthusiastic response to the showing of the motor racing film Rush at the Josiah Smith Tavern in Weston, Massachusetts last winter, AONE officers invested in additional movie and sound equipment and decided to host two motor racing films during the late fall and winter of 2014-2015. The dates for this winter’s “AONE Pizza and a Movie” events, and the movies to be shown, are: 1. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. The Racers, a 1955 film starring Kirk Douglas, Bella Darvi, Gilbert Roland, Cesar Romero, Lee J. Cobb, and Katy Jurado. This movie is a few minutes short of two hours long and pizza will be brought in at the end of the film for an intermission. During the pizza break some excerpts from my collection of motor racing videos will be shown.† This thirty- eight minute special feature will show movies of some 1950s sport car races and some Formula One races in Europe during the fifties. 2. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. Grand Prix, a 1966 film starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand and Toshiro Mifune-- directed by John Frankenheimer. This film is a few minutes short of three hours long with an intermission during the film. Pizza will brought in during that intermission. Following the film a short special will be shown which portrays how James Garner and the other movie stars were taught to -

uring the early Porsche days of the 1950s and ‘60s, Denise McCluggage Dand Ruth Levy were two of the more popular U.S. women sports car racers. In Eu- rope, Gilberte Thirion and Annie Bousquet are the two most recognized women racers during A Racing Lady this period. Similar in age, they began as close friends but apparently racing changed this. His- young and daring torians claim Annie’s fierce competitive nature caused her to not only lose a friend but to even- tually lose her life. Born Annie Schaffer in Vienna, Austria, her exact birth year is debated but apparently falls somewhere between 1921 and 1925. Annie’s French identity is the result of her marriage to Pierre Bousquet whom she first met while he was a POW in Austria during the war. After the Annie Bousquet marriage, the couple moved to France. Legend has it that Bousquet’s racing career began as the result of a 1952 ski trip. Having in- jured herself, she was recuperating in a Ses- triere, Italy hotel bar where she met Gigi Viloresi and Alberto Ascari. Annie was overwhelmed by their exciting racing escapades and a few months later she entered the Rally Sestriere. Some writers state that Bousquet raced with Al- berto Ascari but this seems highly unlikely. As- cari was the 1951 Formula One World Champion and was driving for Scuderia Ferrari at the time. So it seems very unlikely he would have teamed up with a neophyte woman. The records show Bousquet did enter two other races in 1952. The first was the July Alpine Rally where she drove a Renault 4CV but broke the gearbox in Col d’Izoard on the first leg. -

Of special note are Linge’s armbands, guidebooks, programs, and roadmaps for the Carrera Panamericana, Mille Miglia, and Tour de Corse races. Biography: Herbert Linge began his motor racing career rather as a 15 year old apprentice mechanic at Porsche KG in 1943. After the war, he worked on the initial development of the Porsche 356. In the early 1950s, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche commissioned Linge to develop the Porsche service network in the United States and train mechanics at Porsche dealerships. Thus, he played a critical role in popularizing Porsche sports cars in North America. Linge was a mechanic assigned to the Porsche entrants in the early Carrera Panamericana races and in 1954 was tapped as a driver. Thus began his Linge’s long period of success in the great endurance races and rallies of the 1950s and 1960s. From 1958 until 1970 Linge drove a Porsche eleven times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and beginning in 1955 through 1965 he drove a Porsche seven times in the 12 Hours of Sebring. -

1957 / 1966 1957 Piero Taruffi wins the last Mille Miglia in a Ferrari 315 S The year 1957 was a very difficult one for Enzo Ferrari as well as the year when Piero Taruffi, known as “the silver fox” with his white hair, retired from racing. Early in the season, the Ferrari squadron for the Formula 1 and Sports-prototype world championships included talents such as Eugenio Castellotti, Luigi Musso, Peter Collins, Mike Hawthorn, Alfonso De Portago and Wolfgang von Trips, plus other excellent drivers as and when needed. January began with the bitter disappointment of the Argentine Formula 1 Grand Prix, where the best-placed Ferrari was only fifth. However, the disappointment was mitigated just a week later with victory in the Buenos Aires 1000 km thanks to Masten Gregory, Castellotti and Musso with the 290 MM, which set the stage for the conquest of another World Sportscar Championship. But tragedy was just around the corner when, on the 14th of March, Castellotti died in Modena, during a test. Eugenio had won the Mille Miglia in 1956, before which for two years other marques had interrupted Ferrari’s lengthy long domination, which had seen six straight wins from 1948. The Mille Miglia was actually the first race to take place after this tragedy. Piero Taruffi, who had already raced in the Italian endurance race 13 times without winning, was now 51 years old, and had promised his wife Isabella the day before the race that he would retire from competition if he won. Enzo Ferrari was aware of and moved by this promise. -

hen I started this story, I envisioned it as a continuation of last issue’s article about Ed Trego’s Imported Motor Car Co. In Wfact I wrote the entire first draft with that theme in mind. Dur- ing the writing process I spoke with Glen Carroll, Ed Crawford’s mechanic, Ed Crawford, Ed’s wife Margo and his son Bill to fill in details. I felt my draft article was missing something essential. On Christmas Eve, FedEx brought me a nice present. It was 15 pounds of memorabilia that Bill Crawford had gathered together. There were wonderful items in the box. Of course there were pho- Spyder Man tographs of cars racing around the track but there was so much more. There were photographs of the people who loved sports cars, there were handwritten lap sheets recording achievement, there was a dinner menu from Ed Crawford’s appearance with the Porsche factory race team at Le Mans in 1957, there were newspapers telling about Fangio’s kidnapping at the 1958 Havana Grand Prix. There were memories. So indulge me if in this article I bring you a story not just about racing Porsches but of times past and the people that lived then. And so it begins About the time John Shakespeare purchased the Imported Motor Car By Phil Carney Company, the complexion of road racing in the United States started to change. Amateurs were still welcome at road racing events but expensive high-perfor- mance cars were taking all of the wins. One amateur was a young twenty-three-year-old by the name of Edward Webb Crawford.
