2010 FIFA World Cup www.Breaking News English.com Ready-to-use ESL/EFL Lessons by Sean Banville 2010 FIFA World Cup “1,000 IDEAS & ACTIVITIES FOR LANGUAGE TEACHERS” The Breaking News English.com Resource Book http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/book.html Portugal 7 North Korea 0 http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/world_cup_news_2010/portugal_north-korea.html 21st June, 2010 THE ARTICLE From http://www.BreakingNewsEnglish.com/world_cup_news_2010/portugal_north-korea.html Portugal turned on the style in Cape Town to demolish North Korea 7-0. The first half was evenly matched. The Koreans had more of the possession but Raul Meireles scored in the 29th minute to give his team a 1-0 half-time lead. The Koreans probably thought they could get back into this game after the break. Portugal had different ideas. They put on a wonderful display of flowing, attacking football to bombard North Korea’s goal. Simao, Hugo Almeida and Tiago all found the net soon after the break to end the match as a contest. The Koreans never gave up but three more goals from Liedson, Chistiano Ronaldo and Tiago (his second) in the final ten minutes showed the difference in quality between the two teams. It was Ronaldo’s first international goal in two years. To overcome this challenge, we use data from professional soccer, where employees of the same club face different external career opportunities de- pending on their nationality. We test whether the career prospect of being selected to a Euro Cup national team affects players' pre-Cup performances, using nationals of countries that did not participate in the Euro Cup as a control group. We find that the Euro Cup career prospect has positive effects on the performances of play- ers with intermediate chances of being selected to their national team, but negative effects on the performances of players whose selection is very probable.
