The Athena family is commercially developed by LM , ATK (Athena teammate) & subcontractors Athena has flown 7 times with 5 successes, from 3 different launch locations: • Kodiak Launch Complex, AK: Highly Inclined orbits (1 launch) – (active) • Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA: Highly Inclined orbits (4 launches) – (retired) • Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL: Low Inclined orbits (2 launches) – (active) Athena launches are performed from commercially leased facilities under fixed price contracts – the Athena Program does not own or maintain the launch complexes – however, they are rarely used by other launch vehicles. The Athena Program consists 4 basic configurations, of which 2 have flown: • Athena Ic: Very Small Payloads ~300kg to SSO (4 flights) • Athena IIc: Small Payloads ~1000kg to SSO (3 flights) • Athena IIS: Medium Lite Payloads ~1400kg - 3000kg to SSO (Development Required) • Athena III: Medium Payloads ~4300kg to SSO (Development Required) 2 Expanded Athena Launch Vehicle Family Athena III Athena IIS-2/4/6 Athena IIc Athena Athena Ic Model 165 PLF Common Model 120 PLF (4.2m) Model 92 PLF (3.1m) Core (2.3m) OAM Castor 30 UIS Castor 120 LIS LIS CLIS Castor 120 Castor 120 Castor 900 PLF – Payload Fairing OAM – Orbit Adjust Module DM – Dual Mode (Bi-Propellant) Orion 50SXLG UIS – Upper Interstage LIS – Lower Interstage CLIS – Conical Lower Interstage Performance (kg) Athena Ic Athena IIc Athena IIcS-2/4/6 Athena III 500 km; 28.5o (CCAFS LC-46) 615 1640 2080 / 2630 / 3270 5170 w/ DM OAM 760 1885 2700 / 3500 / 4150 5510 700 km; SSO (KLC LP-1) 285 1085 1430 / 1800 / 2190 3730 w/ DM OAM 470 1295 1870 / 2490 / 3010 4300 3 Athena Launch Vehicles & Components 120” PAYLOAD FAIRING 92” PAYLOAD FAIRING 141” PAYLOAD FAIRING Structure 165” PAYLOAD FAIRING Separation System Structure Instrumentation Separation System PAYLOAD ADAPTER Instrumentation Structure Separation System CONICAL LOWER INTERSTAGE Instrumentation ORBIT ADJUST MODULE Structures Attitude control system (ACS) Separation System Avionics Equipment Section Structure DUAL MODE OAM Separation System Structures, Avionics, Sep System CASTOR 30* Bi-Prop ACS 28,500 lbm HTPB Propellant Carbon Fiber Epoxy Case CASTOR 900*** Carbon Phenolic Exit Cone 843,300 lbm of PBAN Propellant Submerged Flex Bearing Steel Case Common Core Elements (Flight Proven) (Flight Elements Core Common Electromechanical TVC D6AC Steel Exit Cone IIc UPPER/LOWER INTERSTAGE Submerged Flex Bearing & Structures Electromechanical TVC Ic Separation System CASTOR 120 ORION 50S XLG (2/4/6)** Athena Athena 107,400 lbm of HTPB Propellant 33,100 lbm of HTPB Propellant Carbon Fiber Epoxy Case Carbon Fiber Epoxy Case Carbon Phenolic Exit Cone Aluminum Exit Cone (KLC) required complex launch Inclination High New • Submerged Flex Bearing Submerged Flex Bearing Required) (Development Elements Growth Performance III Athena Athena IIS Performance Growth Elements (Development Required) (Development Elements Growth Performance IIS Athena Cold gas pressurized Thrust Vector Cold gas pressurized Thrust Vector Flight Heritage Actuation (TVA) Actuation (TVA) * Anteres LV ** Taurus LV ** GMD GBI *** Space Shuttle Derived 4 Athena IIS Launch Vehicle Family SSO Performance KLC, LP-1: Sun-Synchronous Orbit Inclinations 4500 AIIC Dual Mode OAM AIIC Mono-Prop OAM AIIS-2 Dual Mode OAM AIIS-2 Mono-Prop OAM 4000 AIIS-4 Dual Mode OAM AIIS-4 Mono-Prop OAM AIIS-6 Dual Mode OAM AIIS-6 Mono-Prop OAM 3500 3000 D-II 7920 2500 2000 D-II 7420 1500 D-II 7320 Separable Payload Mass (kg) Mass Payload Separable 1000 500 0 500 600 700 800 900 1000 1100 1200 1300 1400 1500 1600 1700 1800 1900 2000 Circular Altitude (km) 5 Athena IIS Launch Vehicle Family ETR Performance 6 Athena IIS Family- Launch Vehicle Specs 120” Ø Fairing 92” Ø Body 100” Rad 74.25” Rad to centerline 40° 146” 1,249” 1,085” 909” 15° Nose Cones 433.5” 354.5” 50” Ø Motors Mass (lbm), Force (lbmf) Athena IIS-2/4/6 Max Expected GLOW 349,000 / 424,000 / 499,000 Nominal Sea Level Thrust @ 1 Sec 465,000 / 630,000 / 795,000 10.5” 7 Simple Modular Design LV Payload Fairings: M92, M120 Std (shown), Long, M141 Std, L, XL CASTOR 30: Common to all Configurations CASTOR 120: Common to all Configurations CASTOR 120: Athena II Athena IIS Orbit Adjust Module: Mono Propellant (shown), Bi-Propellant / Dual-Mode Upper Interstage: Common to all Configurations Lower Interstage: Athena II Athena IIS ORION 50S XLG: Athena IIS, 2/4/6 Non-Separating 8 Athena IIS Payload Fairing Options 15° Nose 45” Cone 36” 45” 15° Nose 141” Ø Cone Fairing 15° Nose Cone 120” Ø Fairing 1,285” 1,334” 1,145” 92” Ø Fairing 1,121” 1,180” 1,009” 909” 909” 909” M92 Fairing M120 Fairing M141 Fairing Standard and Standard, Long, Long (shown) and XL (shown) Development Required Development Required 9 PLF Static Volume Comparison Athena PLF Volumes 125” Ø Comparison PLF Volumes 70” Ø Vega Delta II 108” Ø 94” Ø 108” Ø 49” Ø 19” Ø 81” Ø 42” Ø 38” Ø 119” 100” 113” 78” 165” 78” 196” 166” 126” 102” 66” 17” 87” Ø 85” Ø M92 M120 Std.
