The review board approved waivers sought by J. Milton that reduced the number of pedestrian entries, commercial loading zones and the length of the driveway aisle.     TRANSNATIONAL LANDSCAPES AND THE CUBAN DIASPORA by JENNA ELIZABETH ANDREWS-SWANN (Under the Direction of Virginia D. Nazarea) ABSTRACT This study explores the multiple meanings of landscape and the creation of place within the Cuban Diaspora. Landscape encompasses not only the external physical environment or a particular geographical space, but the concept also represents collections of personal experiences with, and memories linked to, various pieces of the physical environment. Diaspora is an association that is not restricted to a geographical place but formed by cultural nationalism shared by members of a transnational community. The research sites in this study are Moultrie, Georgia, and Miami, Florida. These sites were selected to represent some of the diversity (e.g. rural/urban, established/newly arrived) inherent in the Cuban Diaspora. In light of current scholarship on these themes and the issues facing members of the Cuban Diaspora today, the principal questions addressed in this study are: How are landscapes (re)created and given meaning at locations in the Cuban Diaspora? and How does the context of migration or exile affect the (re)creation of landscapes? To address the research questions, an integrated set of mixed ethnographic methods comprised of participant observation, interviews, life history collection, cognitive mapping, and archival research was used. Results show that the manner in which members of the Cuban Diaspora in the United States left Cuba indeed impacts their relationship with the island and how they experience Cubanidad , or Cubanness. Based on the data collected, many members of the Diaspora who were jailed or otherwise persecuted in Cuba tend to shy away from addressing volatile issues, such as Cuban politics or religion, and choose instead to (re)create a private sense of Cubanidad.

The ninety miles of ocean separating the two nations serves as a type of no‐mans land, the hypothetical battlefield separating Cuban‐ Americans from their homeland and families across the Florida straits. For decades, the Miami Cuban community was seen as possessing a single identity, one of vehement anti‐Castro sentiment and an ever‐present desire to return to the homeland of their memories and past. However, recent literature has suggested that fissures are becoming more apparent in the façade of absolute unity. The break in ideological singularity has emerged along generational lines, invoking Karl Mannheim’s pioneering work on the sociological analysis of generations. This paper attempts to decipher the extent to which a Mannheimian generation is emerging among the youth of the Cuban‐American population in Miami Florida. Using discourse analysis an analysis of print news media conducted on 16 articles from the Miami Herald and 11 articles from the New York Times was undertaken to gain an understanding of the coverage of two major events seen to have an impact on young Cubans in both Miami and Cuba (Juanes’ concert for peace and the Elian Gonzalez case). This analysis shed light on the extent to which an older generation of Cuban‐Americans maintains control of resources.

A story T of intrigue carried out in Havana and Washington, as well as in Panama, Nassau, Kingston, Cuernavaca, Mexico City, New York, and Atlanta, Secret Missions to Cuba is a powerful exposé of the intimidating influence that militant Cuban exiles have had, and its enormous consequences for Cuban Americans. The key to exploring exile politics in Florida is Bernardo Benes, a Cuban American lawyer who made dozens of trips to Cuba to meet with Fidel Castro during the Carter and Reagan administrations. Benes’s first mission in 1978 led to the release of 3,600 political prisoners and enabled exiled Cubans to visit their relatives. He operated in an atmosphere of intimidation so strong that those not adhering to exile community pressures were branded Castro agents, or worse. The personal consequences for Benes were severe: He became—and remains to this day—an outcast in Miami’s Cuban community for having dealt personally with Castro. “As a reporter who covered Miami during the time these events took place, I wish I knew then what this book reveals now. Truth is truly stranger than fiction,” notes best-selling writer Edna Buchanan, who won the Pulitzer Prize for crime reporting while at the Miami Herald. In 2000, anti-Castro rancor in Miami fueled an intense dispute between Cuban Americans and their neighbors over Elián González. The anti- government backlash meant that even more Cuban Americans than usual voted for the Republican Party in the remarkably narrow presidential election.

Gov. Rick Scott, Miami- Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, county and city commissioners, a former congressman, public officials and celebrities attended the VIP event July 12 hosted by Felipe Valls, Sr., founder of the world-renowned restaurant. So many prominent leaders paid tribute to this Cuban-American patriarch and his family because Versailles is a symbol of Cuban- American culture, a tourism and political destination and living proof of what hard work, vision and sheer guts can generate in a free society. The Valls empire is emblematic of the remarkable economic success of Cubans in the United States — what some have called “the Great Cuban Miracle.” Entrepreneurs must have the right motives, preparation, and a certain attitude and propensity to accept risk. The majority of the first wave of Cuban exiles came with little, if any, money, but they had valuable assets: an entrepreneurial spirit, education, organizational skills and an unshakable belief in themselves and what they could achieve as individuals in a free-enterprise system. The festivities will center around food, fun, culture and innovation to commemorate Miami’s founding. “We are going to have a series of events around our 125-year celebration to commemorate our history and to remember how we got here. Why we’re doing well and how we could continue to learn from our past and be successful in the future” Miami Mayor Francis Suarez told Miami Herald news partner CBS4. It all started out with 444 residents, according to HistoryMiami, the museum in downtown Miami. As of 2019, the city was home to 467,963 people, according to the Census Bureau. Let’s take a look at how far Miami has come in its 125 years. NAMES IN THE CITY Julia Tuttle Then: Julia Tuttle was a founder of the city on July 28, 1896. Tuttle was a wealthy widow from Ohio who moved to Miami in 1891 and bought the Fort Dallas land where she built a home, according to the city’s archives. Her vision for the city? A hub of international trade, especially with South America, according to HistoryMiami. Now: She is regarded as the “Mother of Miami.” She has a causeway named for her, the Julia Tuttle Causeway, a a 4.4-mile highway connecting Interstate 95 to the west with Miami Beach to the east. A common perception is that implementation of electronic voting machines and a surge in GOP registration increased Bush’s vote margins relative to the 2000 election. In this paper we offer an alternative explanation: massive Puerto Rican immigration combined with successful Republican mobilization of this group explains about 14% of the increase in Bush’s margin of victory—approximately 50,000 votes. Scholars’ failure to account for intra-ethnic diversity, by employing a “panethnic” approach that treats Latinos as having identical political preferences, leads scholars to overlook the important role of Hispanic subconstituencies in the 2004 election. © 2009 Western Social Science Association.
