JAPANESE NATIVE SPEAKERS’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS ATTENTION-GETTING NE OF INTIMACY IN RELATION TO JAPANESE FEMININITIES THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Atsuko Oyama, M.E. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Master’s Examination Committee: Approved by Professor Mari Noda, Advisor Professor Mineharu Nakayama Advisor Professor Kathryn Campbell-Kibler Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures ABSTRACT This thesis investigates Japanese people’s perceptions of the speakers who use “attention-getting ne of intimacy” in discourse in relation to femininity. The attention- getting ne of intimacy is the particle ne that is used within utterances with a flat or a rising intonation. It is commonly assumed that this attention-getting ne is frequently used by children as well as women. Feminine connotations attached to this attention-getting ne when used by men are also noted. The attention-getting ne of intimacy is also said to connote both intimate and over-friendly impressions. On the other hand, recent studies on Japanese femininity have proposed new images that portrays figures of immature and feminine women. Assuming the similarity between the attention-getting ne and new images of Japanese femininity, this thesis aims to reveal the relationship between them. In order to investigate listeners’ perceptions of women who use the attention- getting ne of intimacy with respect to femininity, this thesis employs the matched-guise technique as its primary methodological choice using the presence of attention-getting ne of intimacy as its variable. In addition to the implicit reactions obtained in the matched- guise technique, people’s explicit thoughts regarding being onnarashii ‘womanly’ and kawairashii ‘endearing’ were also collected in the experiment. -

May 2012 Supervisor: Prof. A Rhoda i ABSTRACT About 10% of children world-wide experience developmental disorders and require access to the health care system. These disorders also require extensive care giving, often throughout childhood and into the adult years. Cerebral palsy (CP) is one such chronic condition, and can serve as a major cause of childhood disability. It is the commonest cause of neurological impairment in childhood and is associated with functional limitations and lifelong disability. Providing the high level of care required by a child with long-term functional limitations can become burdensome and may impact on both the physical and psychological health of the care giver. To prevent problems suffered by mothers of children with CP, it is important to explore the challenges experienced. All studies conducted previously on cerebral palsy in Zambia focus on impairments and difficulties experienced by children with CP and none of the mothers’ challenges have been explored. The aim of this study therefore was to explore the challenges that mothers of children with cerebral palsy experience in Ndola, Zambia. The study was conducted at two rehabilitation centers (Twapia and Mushili) under the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) catchment area in Ndola. A qualitative research design was employed. The mothers were stratified and purposefully selected and interviews were stopped once theoretical saturation was reached. -

Ghofur2 2English Teaching Learning Program, Tarbiyah Faculty, Institut Agama Islam Negeri Madura ([email protected]) Abstract: The novel "Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window" is a novel in which some parts of its story reflect the concept of education that is unique and different. The concept of education in this novel related to an educational value according to Paulo Freire’s perspective. Therefore, this research is mainly purposed to search about what are the educational values found in "Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window"? and how educational values appear in "Totto Chan: The Little Girl at the Window" based on Paulo Freire’s perspective? This research is a qualitative one by using the content analysis method. Two data sources were chosen, the primary data source is the novel its- self and the secondary data are books, literature, official websites, and other relevant materials. In general, the result found 52 educational values contained in the novel, and 28 educational values based on Paulo Freire’s perspective. Those are divided into 6 points: liberating education, pedagogy of the oppressed, dialogic education, the concept of conscientization, contextual education and critical education. Through this research, it is expected that teachers can implement the positive things that exist in this study and in the novels at school and also encourage students’ interest in literature. -

BMC Pediatrics 2011, 11:119 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2431/11/119 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Childhood disability and socio-economic circumstances in low and middle income countries: systematic review Douglas E Simkiss1*, Clare M Blackburn2, Felix O Mukoro3, Janet M Read4 and Nicholas J Spencer5 Abstract Background: The majority of children with disability live in low and middle income (LAMI) countries. Although a number of important reviews of childhood disability in LAMI countries have been published, these have not, to our knowledge, addressed the association between childhood disability and the home socio-economic circumstances (SEC). The objective of this study is to establish the current state of knowledge on the SECs of children with disability and their households in LAMI countries through a systematic review and quality assessment of existing research. Methods: Electronic databases (MEDLINE; EMBASE; PUBMED; Web of Knowledge; PsycInfo; ASSIA; Virtual Health Library; POPLINE; Google scholar) were searched using terms specific to childhood disability and SECs in LAMI countries. Publications from organisations including the World Bank, UNICEF, International Monetary Fund were searched for. Primary studies and reviews from 1990 onwards were included. Studies were assessed for inclusion, categorisation and quality by 2 researchers. Results: 24 primary studies and 13 reviews were identified. Evidence from the available literature on the association between childhood disability and SECs was inconsistent and inconclusive. Potential mechanisms by which poverty and low household SEC may be both a cause and consequence of disability are outlined in the reviews and the qualitative studies. The association of poor SECs with learning disability and behaviour problems was the most consistent finding and these studies had low/medium risk of bias. -

Introduction
Introduction The Ohio Japan Project began in the mid-1980’s when Ohio agreed to join with Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to form The Great Lakes in the Schools Project, funded by the U.S.-Japan Foundation. The members of the project from Ohio developed a series of lessons on Japan. During a trip to Japan in 1988, the Ohio team discussed these lessons with educators in Japan and had them formally critiqued by the International Society for Educational Information, Inc. in Tokyo. The society published a version of the lessons in Japan, while in Ohio they were published as Learning About Our World: Japan. Again with funding form the U.S.-Japan Foundation, the Ohio Japan Project sent a delegation of teachers in Ohio to Japan for two weeks in June-July, 2001. While there, the teachers gathered information to update the lessons previously published and to develop new ones, which reflect more current developments in Japan. Before and during the trip to Japan, the participants spent a great deal of time studying how the Japanese develop lessons that enhance deeper understanding by the students of the concepts to be taught. These lessons reflect the way Japanese teachers construct their lessons to accomplish that deeper level of knowledge and skill development. In this way, students retain the information for a longer period of time, which will help them be more successful on the future state achievement tests and the Ohio Graduation Test. The original publication of lessons identified the connections to the social studies and foreign languages curriculum models. -

Convention on the Rights of the Child--a powerful and wide-ranging legal instrument to promote and protect the human rights of children;(2) regional developments; (3) emergency countries (those suffering recent natural disasters or war); (4) child protection;(5) health;(6) nutrition;(7) safe environment; (8) urban issues;(9) basic education;(10) girls and women;(11) communication; (12) working together (national committees, non-governmental organizations, and inter-agency cooperation;(13) resources and management;(14) UNICEF income, donors, and expenditures (tables and charts); and 15 profiles of individual efforts to improve conditions for children. Descriptions are given for regional developments in West and Central Africa, the Middle East and North Africa; East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (former Soviet Union), and the Baltic states.
