Abbot Ignatius Conrad March 13th is the anniversary of the death of Abbot Ignatius Conrad, the first abbot of our mon- astery. Nicholas Conrad was born on November 15, 1846, in the town of Au, Canton Aargau, Switzer- land. In a family of 12, Nicholas had 10 brothers and one sister. After completing his primary education in the schools of his canton, he continued his studies at Engelberg Abbey. Later, he studied philosophy at the Einsiedeln Abbey where he professed his vows as a monk of Einsiedeln on August 30, 1868, receiving the name Ignatius Loyola. Bishop Kaspar Willi of the Swiss Diocese of Chur ordained him a priest on September 17, 1871. After his priestly ordination, Father Ignatius served the community of Einsiedeln as a teacher of Latin in the Abbey School from 1872 to 1875. Father Ignatius was one of five brothers who be- came priests, four of them joining the Benedictine Order. The eldest, Father Frowin Conrad, a monk of Engelberg Abbey, had been sent to the United States in 1872, in order to establish a Benedictine mission house in northwestern Missouri. Two other brothers, who became Fathers Pius and John, had associated themselves with him. The abbot of Einsiedeln agreed to send Father Ignatius to the United States at the end of the 1875 school year, assigning him to St. Meinrad's Abbey in Indiana, with the understanding that he should be assigned from there to lend assistance to the monks at "New Engelberg" mission house in Missouri. After gaining some proficiency in writing and speaking English, Father Ignatius began his mis- sionary work in Nodaway, Worthy, Gentry, and other northwestern counties of Missouri. -

However, this hasn’t been the lived reality of the past centuries. Plantings – when available – were a form of subsistence farming and yielded mainly vegetables, as well as a few herbs, and crop and medicinal plants. Cabbage, for example, was one of the earliest and most widely distributed vegetables cultivated in a planting. Potatoes, of course, have only been cultivated in Switzerland since the seventeen hundreds, while tomatoes originated in South and Central America were only spread to the rest of the world in the twentieth century. The planting offered special utility on a farmer’s private or communal agricultural land, for it allowed high-risk areas in particular, such as flood- plains, to be cultivated. An important feature of such spaces was thus their enclosure. The strict demarcation and often geometric design of the beds and pathways of plantings originated in the Renaissance, while cloister and parish gardens brought the practice into the countryside. At the turn of the twentieth century, associations of fruit farmers and apiarists spread the custom of espaliers on the facades of their houses. -

The topic of the con- ference 2009 is “Violence in Human Society”. We all are aware that this subject is playing a very important role in relation to the interaction between individuals, families, groups as well as countries and many other aspects of human beings. If we look at our evolution from the early hominids to modern man, the Homo sapi- ens sapiens, it seems plausible that the hominids lived probably peacefully together in small, distant groups. Violence might not have played a major role. This changed dramatically about 10’000 years ago with the appearance of modern Homo sapiens sapiens in connection with the beginning of cattle breeding and cultivation of land followed by urbanization. During this period of our evolution, mankind developed aggression and violence. It also became clear that man, in contrary to the highly developed animals, has lost the genetically determined control of aggressive behaviour. The fact that there are various forms of regulation of violence in modern human beings is predominantly due to cultural achievements. Today, violence has a mainly negative connotation. Nevertheless, violence and ag- gression have also positive impacts. They are driving forces to explore and change our world. Unfortunately, violence in its manifold expressions has created enormous suffering 3 for people as well as whole countries. -

This year’s conference will analyze the state of the current situation and use this as a starting point to examine the requirements for new, sustainable economic systems and to discuss their implementation: · What solutions, if any, does criticism of capitalism offer? · What could an eco-social market economy look like? · Is there a single global economic system that is suitable for social consensus? · How could the financial architecture be improved? · What are the young generation’s requirements for future economic systems? · How can people’s basic needs be met from a global perspective? General History The Diocese of Vincennes—now the Archdiocese of Indianapolis—was established by Pope Gregory XVI on May 6, 1834. The territory then comprised the entire state of Indiana and the eastern third of Illinois. The latter was separated from the Diocese of Vincennes upon the establishment of the Diocese of Chicago, November 28, 1843. By decree of Pope Pius IX, January 8, 1857, the northern half of the state became the Diocese of Fort Wayne, the boundaries being that part of the state north of the south boundaries of Fountain, Montgomery, Boone, Hamilton, Madison, Delaware, Randolph, and Warren counties. The remaining southern half of the state made up the Diocese of Vincennes, embracing 50 counties. It covered an area of 18,479 square miles extending from the north boundaries of Marion and contiguous counties to the Ohio River and from Illinois on the west to Ohio on the east. The second bishop of Vincennes was permitted by apostolic brief to establish his resi- dence at Vincennes, Madison, Lafayette, or Indianapolis; Vincennes was, however, to remain the see city. This permission, with the subtraction of Lafayette, was renewed to the fourth bishop. Upon his appointment in 1878, Bishop Francis Chatard, the fifth bishop of Vincennes, was directed to fix his residence at Indianapolis. Although the site of the cathedral and the title of the see were continued at Vincennes, Bishop Chatard used St. John the Evangelist Parish in Indianapolis as an unofficial cathedral until the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul was completed in 1907. St. John the Evangelist Parish, established in 1837, was the first parish in Indianapolis and Marion County. -

Introduction Americans have continually looked for a territory to call their own; a land that holds great promise for generations to come. For thousands of nineteenth-century pioneers, their search for God’s county brought them across the vast Mississippi River and up the wide Missouri. The settlers found the river valleys of northwest Missouri the ideal place to homestead and cultivate their religious traditions. The arrival of Christian sects such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Protestant denominations, and Catholics transformed northwest Missouri from a frontier territory to a developing region with a thriving economy and established religious institutions. The transformation was far from simplistic as each faith experienced successes and strife. While the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints built thriving communities near sacred sites in northwest Missouri, suspicion, politics, and fear associated with their religion drove them from the state. When Missouri annexed the Platte Purchase Region in 1836, Presbyterian, Methodists, Baptists, and other Protestant branches established new congregations, but divisions over slavery and unrest related to the Civil War brought conflicts to their churches. Catholic religious orders and lay immigrants helped to develop the Platte Purchase by establishing churches, schools, hospitals, and communities. Throughout the nineteenth century, Mormons, Protestants, and Catholics migrated to northwest Missouri for the region's economic prospects and religious opportunities. However, expansion of the frontier brought internal and external conflict which affected the area's development. Northwest Missouri’s geographic location, abundant natural resources, and availability of land enticed pioneers to settle the region. The northwest corner of the state is a broad area which stretches from the Missouri River Valley to the south and west and the Iowa state line to the north.
