(2009). Arizona gasteroid fungi I: Lycoperdaceae (Agaricales, Basidiomycota). Fungal Diversity 37: 153-207. Twenty-eight species in the family Lycoperdaceae, commonly called ‘puffballs’, are reported from Arizona, USA. In addition to widely distributed species, understudied species (e.g., Calvatia cf. leiospora and Holocotylon brandegeeanum) are treated. Taxonomic descriptions and illustrations, which include microscopic characters, are given for each species, and a dichotomous key is presented to facilitate identification. Basidiospore morphology was also examined ultrastructurally using scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out on nrRNA gene sequences (ITS1, ITS2, and 5.8S) from 42 species within (or closely allied to) the Lycoperdaceae. 1) Common Earthball (Scleroderma citrinum) sometimes known pigskin poison puffball, is the most common species of earthball in the UK and occurs widely in woods, heathland and in short grass from autumn to winter. It superficially looks like the edible puff ball, but the Earthball is poisonous, but not fiercely so, nevertheless it is inedible and should be avoided. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 2) Birch Polypore. Piptoporus betulinus, commonly known as the birch polypore, birch bracket, or razor strop, is one of the most common polyporous bracket fungi and, as the name suggests, grows almost exclusively on birch trees. The brackets burst out from the bark of the tree, and these fruiting bodies can last for more than a year. It has been known to kill birch trees as well. Technically, it is an edible mushroom, with a strong, pleasant "mushroomy" odour, but a bitter taste. The velvety cut surface of the fruiting body was traditionally used as a strop for finishing the finest of edges on razors. It is also said to have medicinal properties. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties which have been known since ancient times. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 3) Spotted Toughshank (Rhodocollybia maculate) . This fungus is generally quite widespread in deciduous and sometimes coniferous woodland, generally hiding under bracken. Fruiting in the late summer to early autumn.. Inedible due to its toughness and bitter taste. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 4) Ochre Brittlegill (Russula ochroleuca). for many years commonly referred to as the Common Yellow Russula - is found in all kinds of woodland from mid summer through to early winter. -

Se realiza un estudio sobre la delimitación taxonómica entre los géneros Calvatia, Gastropila y Lan germannia. Una vez concluida la revisión de 23 colecciones de Calvatia pachyderma y después del exa men minucioso del material tipo de este taxon. se decide incluir a todos los especímenes con esporas lisas y forma ovoide dentro del taxon Gastropila fragilis, mientras que los que presentan esporas verrugosa~ y forma globosa se mantienen dentro del concepto original del taxon C. pachyderma, pero transfiriéndolos al género Langermannia, por ser en el que mejor encajan actualmente. This article compiles a detailed analysis of the main features which could be considered to define and separate the genera Calvatia. Gastropila and Langermannia. After studying the type collection of Calva tia pachyderma and 22 other, previously determined under this name, it was proposed to include all the samples showing ovoid and smooth spores within the taxon Gastropila fragilis, while those presenting spores globose, with verrucose ornamentation were transferred into the genus Langermannia, which seemed to be the more appropiated. -

The new information obtained indicates a wider distribution forB . aestivalis, B. dermoxantha, B. fusca, B. graveolens, B. leucoderma, B. oblongispora var. longispora, B. pusilla, and B. tomentosa. New records for the Mexican mycobiota are: B. dominicensis, B. grandipora, B. heterocapilla, B. oblongispora var. oblongispora, and B. sempervirentium. HARPER ADAMS UNIVERSITY THE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND INTEGRATED CONTROL OF FAIRY RINGS ON GOLF COURSES JENNIFER MAY KEIGHLEY MSc BSc (Hons) A THESIS SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY JUNE 2017 ABSTRACT Fairy ring is a common turf disease found on golf courses, but is poorly understood in terms of its epidemiology and control. An online questionnaire was emailed to every golf course in the UK and Ireland (equating to 3,849 recipients) in order to gather information on incidence, distribution and severity of fairy ring. Greenkeepers reported that type-2 fairy ring, where growth of the turf is stimulated, occurred the most frequently and that the impact was predominantly aesthetic. Disease symptoms were at their worst in July and August and were considered more of a problem when occurring on putting greens than any other part of the golf course. -
