Denmark - Officially- Kingdom of Denmark - In Danish- Kongeriget Danmark Size Denmark is approximately 43,069 square kilometers or 16,629 square miles. Denmark consists of a peninsula, Jutland, that extends from Germany northward as well as around 406 islands surrounding the mainland. Some of the larger islands are Fyn, Lolland, Sjælland, Falster, Langeland, MØn, and Bornholm. Its size is comparable to the states of Massachusetts and Connecticut combined. Location Denmark’s exact location is the 56°14’ N. latitude and 8°30’ E. longitude at a central point. It is mostly bordered by water and is considered to be the central point of sea going trade between eastern and western Europe. If standing on the Jutland peninsula and headed in the specific direction these are the bodies of water or countries that would be met. North: Skagettak, Norway West: North Sea, United Kingdom South: Germany East: Kattegat, Sweden Most of the islands governed by Denmark are close in proximity except Bornholm. This island is located in the Baltic Sea south of Sweden and north of Poland. Capital The capital city of Denmark is Copenhagan. In Danish it is Københaun. It is located on the Island of Sjælland. Latitude of the capital is 55°43’ N. and longitude is 12°27’ E. Geography Terrain: Denmark is basically flat land that averages around 30 meters, 100 feet, above sea level. Its highest elevation is Yding SkovhØj that is 173 meters, 586 feet, above sea level. This point is located in the central range of the Jutland peninsula. Introduction Fig. 1: freight and persons crossing the Danish borders, 2006 and 2009/2011 The Danish-German border is short in comparison to other EU internal borders. Still it is relevant also as the border between the continent and Scandinavia, or the countries within the Nordic Council. The border’s history is conflict ridden. It was drawn in 1920, together with other new borders drawn in connection with the post WW-I order in Europe, reflecting (not only) the result of a plebiscite. The decades from 1920 to the 1950’s witnessed a bordering process with clear demarcation as well as the introduction of strict visa regimes and migration restriction, accompanied by the cut of economic flows and continued political challenges to the exact location of the border. Especially Denmark was interested in securing the border from possible German claims of revision. This changed only after Denmark joined the EC in 1973. Infrastructure investments as a freeway (opened fully in 1983) connecting the Jutland peninsula with the Hamburg metropolitan area and its seaport (2nd-3rd in Europe), the shorter “line as the birds fly” rail and road connection across Fehmarn-Lolland, disrupted by a 1 h ferry passage (1963), the introduction of frequent ferry services on the Rostock-Gedser route after German reunification (1990) and the planned fixed link under the Fehmarn Belt together with railway and road improvements on both shores (opening in the 2020’s) have made the region the major transport corridor between Europe and Scandinavia. -

Proceedings of The Sixth Workshop on Baltic Sea Ice Climate August 25–28, 2008 Lammi Biological Station, Finland HELSINKI 2009 2 Preface The importance of sea ice in the Baltic Sea has been addressed in the Baltic Sea Ice Workshops. The ice has been identified as a key element in the water and energy cycles and ecological state of the Baltic Sea. The variability in sea ice conditions is high and due to the short thermal memory of the Baltic Sea closely connected to the actual weather conditions. The spatial and temporal long-term variability of the ice cover has been discussed in the Baltic Sea Ice Workshops. One motivation of the workshop series, which started in 1993, was that sea ice is not properly treated in Baltic Sea research in general although the ice season has a major role in the annual cycle of the Baltic Sea. This still holds true, which is a severe bias since in environmental problems, such as oil spill accidents in winter and long term transport of pollutants, the ice conditions play a critically important role. Also in regional climate changes the Baltic Sea ice cover is a sensitive key factor. In the Baltic Sea Ice Climate Workshops these topics have been extensively discussed, in addition to basic Baltic Sea ice science questions. -
