Welcome to the Dublin Arabic Film Festival 2018 As Festival President and Festival Director, we are delighted to be working again with our partner venue, the Irish Film Institute, for the fifth edition of our festival, showcasing the latest in Arab film culture, supported by our presenting partner Dubai Duty Free. The filmmaking of the Arabic-speaking world is remarkably rich and steeped in history, and the films selected for this year’s festival represent a flavour of the best current Arab cinema on offer. The championing of women filmmakers continues to be a key aim of the festival, and this year we have no less than four films at the IFI that can be awarded the F-Rating, including the Opening Night presentation, Looking for Oum Kulthum, about a film director’s exploration of the life of the celebrated Egyptian singer, and House in the Fields, a gentle documentary portrait of an isolated village in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Elsewhere in the programme we present Sheikh Jackson, about a young cleric obsessed with Jackson, and The Insult, a searing courtroom drama which explores the lasting legacy of the Lebanese Civil War.
