This group of movies includes independent feature-length films, documentaries, short and experimental films and videos. They closely engage with the unique conditions of Malaysia’s economic development, ethnic relationships, and cultural practices, which together comprise significant understandings of the nationhood of Malaysia. The analyses and discussions of the content and practices of these films allow us not only to recognize the economic, social, and historical circumstances of Malaysia, but we also find how these movies reread and rework the existed imagination of the nation, and then actively contribute in configuring the collective entity of Malaysia. 4 DEDICATION To parents, family, friends, and cats in my life 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor, Prof. -

Antiochia As A Cinematic Space and Semir Aslanyürek as a Film Director From Antiochia Selma Köksal, Düzce University, [email protected] Volume 8.2 (2020) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2020.279 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This study will look at cinematic representation of Antiochia, a city with multiple identities, with a multi- cultural, long and deep historical background in Turkish director Semir Aslanyürek’s films. The article will focus on Aslanyürek’s visual storytelling through his beloved city, his main characters and his main conflicts and themes in his films Şellale (2001), Pathto House (2006), 7 Yards (2009), Lal (2013), Chaos (2018). Semir Aslanyürek was born in Antiochia in 1956. After completing his primary and secondary education in Antiochia (Hatay), he went to Damascus and began his medical training. As an amateur sculptor, he won an education scholarship with one of his statues for art education in Moscow. After a year, he decided to study on cinema instead of art. Semir Aslanyürek studied Acting, Cinema and TV Film from 1980 to 1986 in the Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK), Faculty of Film Management, and took master's degree. While working as a professor at Marmara University, Aslanyürek directed feature films and wrote many screenplays. This article will also base its arguments on Aslanyürek's cinematic vision as multi-cultural and as a multi- disciplinary visual artist. Rogan’s List 2019 Greetings WFU parents! Fond thanks to the many of you who recommended this book or that movie or the new restaurant in your home city. Keep ‘em coming! Parents who’ve seen this previously skip this graf, but if you’re new to this odd enterprise: three inspirations converged a dozen-plus years ago. As a still-singleton, felt a response was necessary to my expanding circle of married-with-kids friends’ annual Holiday Letters, tinged with a certain “here’s how life works”-ness. And I loved pal Drew Littman’s roundup of his fave movies/books of the year (Drew also originated the B game/A game you’ll see on next page). Third, I grew up with Roger Angell’s annual New Yorker rhyming ‘poem’ of boldface names, & added my own pale imitation after Angell stopped…then NYer’s Ian Frazier picked up the tradition. Shifted therefore to a ‘found poem’ of lines from songs by millennial/rising-generation musicians; this year’s is after the best-of music page below. Speaking of poems, a stanza from one long beloved, WS Merwin’s To the New Year: so this is the sound of you here and now whether or not anyone hears it this is where we have come with our age our knowledge such as it is and our hopes such as they are invisible before us untouched and still possible On to my favorites of 2019. To adapt a venerable Welsh saying, may the best artistic creations of the decade just ending be the worst of the next. -

Coastal Climate Stories Documentary
Fall 2019 Sustainability Grant Proposal Coastal Climate Stories Fellowship Documentary Initiative Project Leader: Sean Jackson Amount Requested $2,876 Overview and Goals: During the Spring of 2019 I was a recipient of the first Paul Smith’s Climate Fellowship grant. The focal point of the fellowship was to work in conjunction with the climate stories project to collect interviews pertaining to the implications of climate change on different social and environmental factors through the lived realities of interviews subjects. The Climate Fellowship was granted on the grounds of a loose project proposal which I would later work to develop and hone over the course of the Spring 2019 semester. My initial project proposal was to work within the confines of the coastal communities travelling along the East Coast of the United States to collect climate stories along this gradient to see if we noticed any particular trends as our body of interviews grew. Because this was the first year of the program, output goals were relatively flexible. The primary objective for final products was to be in the form of interview transcripts and reflective writings. This was an adequate outlet for much of what the fellowship was trying to capture but was largely confined by a lack of a distributable medium. For this reason, I wanted to build upon the fellowship’s potential reach in order to make sure that these important stories pertaining to climate change were not just being collected, but also shared, and discussed. The objective of the climate stories project is to develop a comprehensive body of climate change related stories and in doing so create a network of individuals to work towards a more sustainable future. -

CCI3 LITERATURE PROJECTIVE IDENTIFICATION WITH THE ROMA PEOPLE IN BALKAN FILMS Puskás-Bajkó Albina, PhD Student, ”Petru Maior” University of Tîrgu Mureș Abstract: In the cinema of the Balkans Roma people are present at every step. As these films were not directed by Roma specialists, one has the tendency to ask the question: how true are these figures to the real Roma nature and behaviour? And very important: what can we account this ongoing interest in Gipsy culture and life for? Is it curiosity about what seems to otherwise be despised by people or could it possibly be the so-called “projective identification”, an expression extensively used by Jacques Lacan in psychoanalysis? The figure of the Gipsy is omnipresent in the history of Balkan cinema. The first ever Balkan film, shown in foreign countries too was about them: In Serbia: A Gypsy Marriage (1911), the first ever Gypsy film to enter and win an international film festival was from the former Yugoslavia: I Even Met Happy Gypsies (1967), directed by Aleksander Petrovic. It won the “Grand Prix Special”. The image of the Gipsy was, however presented by the non-Roma film-directors in these films. “Rather than being given the chance to portray themselves, the Romani people have routinely been depicted by others.
