With the goal of producing a literary research paper in mind, students will develop close/active/slow reading skills and work through the process of drafting, rewriting, and revising their writing. The story is continuous; there are no empty chapters in the plot. -

Classic Poetry Series Derek Walcott - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Derek Walcott(23 January 1930) Derek Walcott OBE OCC is a Saint Lucian poet, playwright, writer and visual artist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992 and the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2011 for White Egrets. His works include the Homeric epic Omeros. Robert Graves wrote that Walcott "handles English with a closer understanding of its inner magic than most, if not any, of his contemporaries”. <b>Life</b> Early Life Walcott was born and raised in Castries, Saint Lucia, in the West Indies with a twin brother, the future playwright Roderick Walcott, and a sister. His mother, a teacher, had a love of the arts who would often recite poetry. His father, who painted and wrote poetry, died at 31 from mastoiditis. The family came from a minority Methodist community, which felt overshadowed by the dominant Catholic culture of the island. As a young man he trained as a painter, mentored by Harold Simmons whose life as a professional artist provided an inspiring example for Walcott. Walcott greatly admired Cézanne and Giorgione and sought to learn from them. Walcott then studied as a writer, becoming “an elated, exuberant poet madly in love with English” and strongly influenced by modernist poets such as T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. Walcott had an early sense of a vocation as a writer. In the Poem "Midsummer" (1984), he wrote Forty years gone, in my island childhood, I felt that the gift of poetry had made me one of the chosen, that all experience was kindling to the fire of the Muse. -

The curriculum will include practice in close reading/explication of selected poems. The course will be taught in a partially synchronous distance learning mode, using SJSU’s Canvas and Zoom platforms, with weekly Monday Zoom class meetings, 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. The course may be taken two times for credit (toward an MA or MFA degree). The Denmark Vesey Conspiracy Conceptualizing Crime and Religion in Slaveholding Societies Paul Schneider-Krumpus This project was supported by the University of Minnesota Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Premise of Research Through the UROP program, I have conducted an historical documentary analysis of the Denmark Vesey conspiracy, an alleged plot of slave rebellion that was exposed in Charleston, South Carolina in 1822. This research is meant to be part of Professor Katherine Gerbner’s wider research on the construction of religion and crime in relation to New World slavery. Little documentation of the alleged plot exists outside of court documents from the trials of the accused, and so these were especially important source materials. New strides are being made in the understanding of the Denmark Vesey conspiracy, as professional historians continue to accumulate sources and construct new and fuller interpretations of the events. Objective of Research The objective of this research was to use primary sources relevant to the Denmark Vesey conspiracy to learn about the relationships between law, religion, and the institution of slavery in the antebellum American South, particularly in relation to slave revolts. Considering the religious nature of the plot, its conspirators, its suppressors, and the very society it took place in, the Denmark Vesey conspiracy is especially suited to an analysis of this sort. Compared to other slave revolts, this plot is only lightly studied. It could be essential to understanding other North American slave revolts though; the number of people involved is alleged to be well over 6,000, which would make it one of the largest uprisings ever conceived of in this part of the world. -

WEES GONNA TELL IT LIKE WE KNOW IT TUH BE: CODED LANGUAGE IN THE WORKS OF JULIA PETERKIN AND GLORIA NAYLOR by CRYSTAL MARGIE HILLS ABSTRACT This study employs African American literary criticism and critical discourse analysis to evaluate Julia Peterkin's Scarlet Sister Mary (1928) and Gloria Naylor's Mama Day (1988). These women write stories of African American life on the Sea Islands through different prisms that evoke cultural memory within and outside the texts. Peterkin, a white Southerner, writes as an "onlooker" and “pioneer” of fictional Gullah culture; Naylor, a black Northerner by birth, writes as an "outsider" to Gullah culture, although a veteran of African American Southern heritage. The authors' hybridity produce different literary voices.
