Page, Curator of Fishes, Florida Museum of Natural History Abstract Understanding the evolution of organismal form is a primary concern of comparative biology, and inferring the phylogenetic history of shape change is, therefore, a central concern. Shape is one of the most important and easily measured elements of phenotype, and shape is the result of the interaction of many, if not most, genes. The evolution of morphological traits may be tightly linked to the phylogeny of the group. Thus, it is important to test the phylogenetic dependence of traits to study the relationship between traits and phylogeny. My dissertation research has focused on the study of body shape evolution using geometric morphometrics and the ability of geometric morphometrics to infer or inform phylogeny. For this I have studied shape change in Mystus (Siluriformes: Bagridae) and North American cyprinids. Mystus Scopoli 1771 is a diverse catfish group within Bagridae with small- to medium-sized fishes. Out of the 44 nominal species worldwide, only 30 are considered to be part of Mystus. Mystus is distributed in Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Vietnam, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. -

Fishes of the Xe Kong Drainage in Laos, Especially from the Xe Kaman
1 Co-Management of freshwater biodiversity in the Sekong Basin Fishes of the Xe Kong drainage in Laos, especially from the Xe Kaman October 2011 Maurice Kottelat Route de la Baroche 12 2952 Cornol Switzerland [email protected] 2 Summary The fishes of the Xe Kaman drainage in Laos have been surveyed between 15 and 24 May 2011. Fourty-five fish species were observed, bringing to 175 the number of species recorded from the Xe Kong drainage in Laos, 9 of them new records for the drainage. Twenty-five species (14 %) have been observed from no other drainage and are potentially endemic to the Xe Kong drainage. Five species observed during the survey are new to science (unnamed); they belong to the genera Scaphiodonichthys, Annamia, Sewellia and Schistura (2 species). Three of them have been discovered during the survey, the others although still unnamed were already known for some time, under an erroneous name. In the Xekong drainage, a total of 19 (11 %) fish species are still unnamed or their identity is not yet cleared and they are potentially also new to science. The survey focused on Dakchung district. Eleven species were collected on Dakchung plateau and 3 are apparently new to science (and thus 27 % of the fish fauna of the plateau is endemic there). Most of the endemic species (and all the new species discovered by the survey) are from rapids and other high gradient habitats. This reflects the limited distribution range of rheophilic species, but may also partly result from a sampling bias. However, phylogenetic relationships of Siluriformes have remained unresolved at high taxonomic level. In this study, phylogenetic trees of 30 catfish species belonging to nine families collected from Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) were constructed based on two mitochondrial gene sequences using Neighbor Joining (NJ), Bayesian inference (BI) and Maximum likelihood (ML) methods. The results obtained from the BI and NJ methods showed more similarity than those obtained from ML method. Monophyly of Siluriformes was strongly supported by all applied phylogenetic methods. Seven of nine studied families performed monophyletic clade, while other families including Pangasiidae (14 species, four genera) and Bagridae (11 species, three genera) displayed paraphyletic. All analyses indicated that: (i) Loricaridae was placed as basal and being a sister clade to remaining families; (ii) Among Silurioidei, Plotosidae showed as a sister clade to the rest of families. -
