From your Chapter Directors Wow, May have been a real busy month. So many things, and so little time. So, here is a quick summary and recap. If you are interested. We started off the month with an awesome SC District Rally in Newberry, SC. A huge thank you to all the District Dream Team for all their efforts. Great rides, great facilities, lot’s of activities and lot’s of fun. We had 16 members attend over the three days. Some could not stay all three days for personal reasons, and that is ok. Our Chapter Banner took first place. Our Chapter Challenge did not fair so well, but we want to thank Anita Fender and Gloria Servant, and the many others, who contributed to a fine challenge. I would like to thank each of you, who helped out with helping to run some of the tables. Without your help, I would have spent all my time behind a table, so thank you. And for those who participated in the games challenge. What a blast. We had Sherri & Michael Pawlak, helping Anne and me trying to be the fastest in the chapter game challenge. Thank you to Joe & Carol for the pictures.

And next year, we get to try out the Opera House again the last weekend in April, so reserve the dates on your calendar now. Then we had our first Meet to Eat for the month at Donatos Pizza in Summerville. Great turnout with 18 people there, and lot’s of great food. Then we rolled into the Saturday routine, with the Education Seminar followed by the Chapter Gathering. Again, a great turnout with 12 people for the seminar, and 28 people for the gathering. Our seminar this month, we talked about Helmet Myths, with demo’s of the many types of helmets. For the gathering, we had two visitors this month, but, we did see one of our members who came to the first chapter gathering. Welcome to the chapter Kevin. We hope to see you back.

(Continued on page 3)

2 From your Chapter Director (Continued)

(Continued from page 2) Following the gathering, we took a mystery ride to one of the Chapter Challenge locations. We had a nice ride down to Riverfront Park, in North Charleston where we saw some of the history of Charleston Ports, and had a cool breeze blowing across our faces. Nice short ride, but the scenery was awesome. Then the following week, we had our Team Meeting with a great turnout for it. Several things were discussed, to include the upcoming Augusta, GA trip in October, and maybe a mountain trip in September. Sadly enough, the following Saturday Chapter Maintenance day had to be postponed. Weather was not our friend, and then we started loosing folks that would normally help out, so we have rescheduled it for June 9th. The next event was our next Meet to Eat at St. James Place in Goose Creek. Another great turnout and lot’s of fun. Then came the big event for the month, our first Progressive Lunch Ride. With 21 people signing up for the fun, it was some great rides and great food. Thanks to our three mystery hosts for supporting this and welcoming us into their homes. There was some awesome vittles served up at all three locations. Those who couldn’t make it, you were missed, but plan to attend our next one… maybe in the fall. Our last event will most likely happen after we complete this newsletter, but we are going to Baskin Robbins to help them “Celebrate 31”. We hope to be able to enjoy some fine ice cream. I mentioned at the last Chapter Gathering, about the N.12, GWRRA Emergency Information Form. This form is available online, or, if you email me, I will be glad to send it to you. The one I have is a PDF Fillable version, so you can type your info in and save it, allowing you the ability to come back later and make changes, updates, and reprint. It is recommended you keep two copies on your Gold Wing. One in the front left pocket (it doesn’t lock) and the trunk. In case of an accident, one of these should remain intact, and if people know you have it, they can assist First Responders to get it for them. The last thing I want to talk about this month, is the holiday season. We are coming off of Memorial Day Weekend, where we plan to setup a Motorist Awareness table, serve coffee and other refreshments, at the Orangeburg East Bound I-26 rest area. Chapter R will be joining us. We would love to have as many of you who can offer a little bit of time, to help serve refreshments and hand out Motorist Awareness flyers. So come on out and join us, and let’s make our bikes visible at the rest area, and show off our machines. And with that, that’s a wrap for this month. Until next time, ride safe, ride often, and be thankful, Mike Melton

American Red Cross First Aid Kits Most of us have taken basic First Aid courses and a few have taken CPR training as well, maybe at work or as part of the GWRRA Levels Program. Do you have a First Aid kit in your homes? In your vehicles? On your bikes/trikes? You never know when a situation arises or where you will be, maybe far from a cell signal or ability for EMS to respond quickly.

We recently added a Red Cross Family First Aid Kit to our RV. What we found was a very well stocked, organized pouch with clear pocket pages and instructions. It starts with 115 pieces, from medicines, antiseptics, bandages, dressings and other injury treatment supplies. It also includes gloves, scissors, tweezers, thermometers, emergency blanket and a First Aid Guide. It is suggested that you incorporate any additional items you feel would be helpful, maybe an Epi pen or Benadryl.

These, and other kits are available on the Red Cross Store website. This kit is $29 plus shipping. Whatever you decide, get a Kit, make a Plan and be Informed. Be prepared and stay safe. Submitted by George and Gloria Servant

Membership Enhancement Sherri & Mike Pawlak email - [email protected]

Welcome our New MEC Team Members Please join me in welcoming our newest Chapter “G” team members, Sherri & Mike Pawlak. Sherri and Mike have been members of GWRRA for a couple of years now and when they weren’t traveling for work, they’ve been active participants in chapter rides and events. Sherri has been teaching our CPR/First Aid classes and Mike has shared his electrical talents at maintenance days. We are looking forward to seeing more of them at upcoming events and activities. A little bit about them... Sherri & Mike ride a 2015 Silver Gold Wing that they have managed to put 20K miles on since 2015, when they upgraded from a Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Mike started riding motorcycles around 1980 and has continued to ride off and on over the years. Riding is a family activity and it was their son who encouraged them to get back into riding after their last hiatus. They are also members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. Sherri was an EMT before becoming a LPN. She has been a CPR/FA Instructor since 1982, and has worked with several local medical facilities providing training for offices, groups and individuals. She’s been a military dependent much of her life, first with her Dad and then her husband Mike. She was born in San Pablo, AB Hospital, Seville, Spain, so she was born to travel. Mike is a retired Air Force veteran, seeking out his new role in life. He works too much, but gets to ride his motorcycle for some of it. Mike was an Electronic Technician, and has already demonstrated his skills at our maintenance day last yea when he helped to rewire a trailer. He was born and grew up in Tonawanda, NY before joining the Air Force. Mikes fun things to do include ridingTravel motorcycles, Trivia working at martial arts, and hunting when he has the1.Which time. Inattentional Blindness Inattentional blindness can be defined as an event in which an individual fails to perceive an unexpected stimulus that is in plain sight – Wikipedia. That is what they are calling “looked-but-failed-to-see” crashes. That is what happens in a car-bike crash when the car violates the motorcyclists’ right-of-way. An Australian university study concluded that drivers’ brains are overloaded with information and seeing motorcycles is not a high priority. Throw distracted driving into the mix and that ups the chances of a crash. What can we, as motorcyclists do? The month of May being Motorcycle Awareness Month is a help. Public awareness events will get the word out. The study also shows that licensed motorcyclists were more likely to notice other motorcycles. How about pointing out motorcycles in traffic whenever someone is riding in a vehicle with you. Every time, not just on occasion. Especially kids, new drivers and non-riders. Play a game with the kids and grandkids, “who can count the most motorcycles”. Try to get everyone noticing motorcycles and letting them know you ride. And if you see people in cars waving at you at least you know they are seeing you! Wave back and enjoy your ride. Excerpts from a small article in American Motorcyclist magazine. Chapter Ride Coordinator Well, what do you say lets take a ride after Craig R. Miller the Chapter Gathering on 2 June? I was thinking 106 Heritage Ln, about going down to Savannah and seeing the Summerville SC 29483 Mighty 8th Air Force Museum. This is off I-95 [email protected] and should be a fun place to visit. If you want to 843-345-7890 go e-mail me at [email protected].

I’m also thinking about getting a ride together to go to Georgetown after the July Chapter Gathering. We could take a boat tour of the sound and go out and collect shells at the lighthouse. Again, let me know if you would be interested in this. I want to plan rides that the members would like to do, not just what I want. So please let me know what interests you. There are a lot of fun places close to Charleston to see, so please send me some ideas for future rides. Craig Miller

Last year, Chapter G made a $400 donation to One80 Place in Charleston to benefit homeless Veterans. We raised the funds with a Scavenger Hunt Ride and a Mystery Ride that both enjoyed good participation. We have decided to support this very worthwhile charity again this year. As mentioned on the previous page, we ask that all our members bring new and unused items as donations to the next few Chapter Gatherings. These items will be collected and assembled into gift baskets and be available to raffle at our October Chapter gathering. October is a double points month and we may have a few visitors also. Monetary donations will be appreciated as well.

A message from Stacey Denaux, One80 Place CEO:

“You, and others like you, did an amazing job last year. Please know that our clients would not have been able to end or avert their homelessness without the support of individuals like you.”

If you have not made a contribution, we hope you will consider helping today. There is nothing like your philanthropy.

$.93 of every dollar you donate goes to funding services, and when your dollars go to work, they help nearly 1,000 individuals return to housing annually and about 90% will stay housed, even after two years.

Will you help homeless families and individuals?

14 The Goodie Shop The Future is Here!

National Geographic Creates The Most Immersive Helmets Ever! When it came time for National Geographic to build an immersive experience for its new Will Smith narrated show, One Strange Rock, the network didn't want another virtual reality experience. So it worked together with McCann and New York City-based American Flag Tomorrow Lab to build something entirely new: Space Projection Helmets. From the outside, they look like replica NASA gear -- fitting since One Strange Rock is Heart Patch - $7.00 focused on astronauts and their view of Earth. On the inside, though, they have all of the equipment necessary for a personal theatrical experience. You can think of the helmets as mini OMNIMAX cinemas, Ryan’s for Breakfast !!! the dome version of IMAX screens typically found in science museums. June, July & August Putting one on is almost like gearing up for space, at least based on a demo at a media event in New York. A Chapter Gatherings will helper first places a harness assembly over your head, which includes shoulder pads to balance it. Then you be at Ryan’s for 8 AM are led into a theater, where another worker carefully breakfast. places the helmet over your head and locks it into the harness. After that, slide down the visor and prepare to We can get some early launch into virtual space. Wearing the Space Projection Helmet is a strange riding in before the heat experience at first -- you've got the freedom to move your head around, just like a real astronaut. But it feels of summer. more claustrophobic than wearing a VR headset, since your head is literally trapped in a tiny space. Each helmet features a tiny 720p laser projector paired together with a fisheye lens. Together, they shoot a properly proportional image onto the curved visor. Drink lot’s of water, to include while you are riding. Wear long sleeves. The wind blowing across your skin, will dry it out, causing your body to push fluids to the skin, causing dehydration.
