We combed through numerous packets and brochures from Chambers of Commerce and other organizations all across the state. We searched the internet and made countless phone calls. We selected the sites we thought most appropriate for you and your family. This guide can be used year after year with students of all ages. The guide is divided into four parts. The first part is a county-by-county guide to the sites in Georgia. This part has a section for each county; the counties are arranged alphabetically. For your convenience, at the beginning of this section is a list of all the cities which have sites included and the county in which they are located. The second part has sections for subjects such as music, Native Americans, the Civil War, science and technology, and many more. When you are focusing on a certain subject, check this section to learn about sites that will enrich your studies. In the third part of the guide, the sites are arranged according to the units in Exploring Georgia. As you are working through each unit, look at this section to see the possibilities of field trips that will make your study of the curriculum more memorable and meaningful. The fourth part of this guide is a list over 300 events and festivals offered throughout the state, listed by month. Many communities offer Fourth of July celebrations, fall festivals, Christmas celebrations, etc. that are not included on this list. Contact specific counties to find out what they offer. You also may want to visit these websites: www.gastateparks.org and www.georgiaonmymind.org. Some of the dates for these events vary from year to year. An event may be listed in June, but one year it may take place in July. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you plan ahead and find out in advance about the festivals and events in which you are interested. If an event listed in this section has no contact information, look at the section for the county in which the event takes place. We suggest contacting a site before you visit it. The site may have odd hours or be closed for the season. Some sights may offer special prices on certain days. If no contact information is available for a specific site, look at the visitor contact information for that county. Several counties offer brochures for driving and walking tours of historic sites in the area. Chambers of Commerce, welcome centers, and visitor centers are often a good place to pick up such brochures. Please understand that we have not visited all of these sites or attended all of the events. Even though we tried to chose family-friendly sites, we do not necessarily condone all of the performances at the theaters, all of the information in the museums, or all of the activities at the festivals. We hope that you and your family enjoy Exploring Georgia together!
