  • Family of ANTOINE * DE L'aigle - Lord De La Montagne
Family of ANTOINE * DE L'AIGLE - Lord de la Montagne First Generation 1. ANTOINE * DE L'AIGLE Lord de la Montagne was born about 1450. History of Saintonge The name of Saintonge comes from Latin Santonia, which was used to designate the area inhabited by the tribe of Santones. Their capital city, Mediolanum Santonum, now Saintes, was an important city in the Roman times. The amphitheater and the votive arch, built on the bridge over the river Charente in year 19 by Caius Julius Rufus as a tribute to Germanicus, Tiber and Drusus, are the most important remains of the Roman city. The city was still important when the Roman Empire collapsed, and was celebrated by the local poet Ausonius (c. 310 - c. 395), appointed count and consul by emperor Gratian. In the Middle Ages, Saintonge had no specific administrative status. The area was divided in small domains for which the count of Poitou and the duke of Aquitaine competed. In the XIII-XIVth centuries, the north of Saintonge was part of the Capetian royal domain, whereas the south was part of the Plantagenet Anglo-Normand kingdom. In 1204, Saintonge was among John Lackland's domains which were confiscated by king of France Phillipe-Auguste, who could keep only the Upper Saintonge. In 1259, Louis IX (St. Louis) ceded to king of England Henry III the duchy of Guyenne, which included Saintonge. In 1360, by the treaty of Brétigny, Saintonge was incorporated with Aquitaine, Aunis and Angoumois to the kingdom of England. Reconquered by constable Duguesclin in 1371, Saintonge was definitively incorporated to the kingdom of France by Charles V in 1375.

Interviewee: Dr. LeAnn Caldwell, female, Caucasian, Director of the Center for the Study of Georgia History and Augusta University, Augusta, Georgia Interviewer: Dr. Niki Christodoulou, Augusta University ******************** Dr. Christodoulou: Dr. Caldwell, tell me a little bit about who you are. Dr. LeAnn Caldwell: Well, I’m LeAnn Caldwell, I have been a professor at this university since 1991, with the exception of six years when I chaired the history and geography department at Georgia College and State University which is the public liberal arts university of the state and then I came back here in 2008 and had been here since running the center for Georgia history, and since our merger um, also serving as the university historian. Prior to that in the 1980’s I taught at Paine College for eleven years, which is a historically Black college here in Augusta that was found in the 1880’s in the post-Civil War period by bi-racial Methodist churches, southerners, which is interesting in itself, because most of the African American colleges had been founded by Northerners, but these were Black and White Methodist who came together to found Paine and that was a wonderful teaching experience as well. So, I’ve been in education basically my entire adult life. Um, I got a master’s and doctorate degree in history at the University of Georgia and so that’s the content area that I have focused in and I have increasingly focused my research down to state and local history. I have become one of those people that get called on by lay people in the community who are not historical scholars, but need help learning about our past.

PageNewsletter 1 of TheThe Georgia Hornet’s Nest Society January—March 2018 The January—March 2018 The President’s Dispatch Two weeks after my installation as President of the Georgia Society, we celebrated the 239th Anniversary of the Battle of Kettle Creek. Secretary General Warren Alter and his wife Nancy honored us with their presence at the Kettle Creek Battlefield Association Banquet Fri- day evening. Secretary General Alter and I brought “Greetings”. Saturday morning, the Georgia Society Combined Color Guard with Militia Firing Unit raised the Colors at the Wilkes County Court House to begin this year’s celebration. The Color Guard with participants from nearby South Atlantic District states provided a splendid perfor- mance under the command of Bill Palmer. Next, South Atlantic District Vice President Gen- eral James Wood, Secretary General Warren Alter and I led the parade around Washington square. This year the Washington-Wilkes High School marching band provided music to the pleas- ure of parade participants and the viewing public. Following the parade, the skirmish took place at Washington Park with the Patriots victorious over the British-led Tories. Because threatening weather was forecast for Saturday afternoon, the War Hill event was transferred to the Pope Center in downtown Washington. Color Guard members again provided timely help in removing the Friday night banquet tables, rearranging chairs and setting up more than 80 wreaths in a very short time. Secretary General Warren Alter was the keynote speaker, the Greene County High School Air Force JROTC unit provided the saber salute for the wreath presentation and the Georgia Society C.A.R.
