For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Expressions of the Calabrian diaspora in Calabrian Australian writing* Gaetano Rando University of Wollongong Paolo Cinanni’s (1968 and 1974) socio-historical studies of mass migration from Calabria between 1860 and 1970 have been augmented and enhanced by Pasquino Crupi’s work (1979, 1993-1997, 2002a, 2002b) on the articulation of themes related to this phenomenon in modern and contemporary Calabrian literature. As Joseph Pivato’s (2004) paper shows for Canada, Calabrians in the diaspora too have also given literary articulation to the migration experience and its consequences. Calabrian Australians constitute the second largest Italian regional group (the largest being the Sicilians) and according to community estimates currently number approximately 70000 of which about 38000 are Calabrian born. They have distinguished themselves in Australia mainly in the economic sector such as the many small businesses and the few large ones established by Calabrians while many of the second generation have experienced upwards socioeconomic mobility by entering the professions (solicitors, certified practicing accountants, doctors). -

Una basilica bizantina in epoca normanna Premessa La comprensione della storia di un luogo, generalmente, è aiutata dalla ricerca dei documenti che in qualche misura dimostrino la sincerità delle nostre affermazioni ed il rigore del nostro metodo. Nella nomenclatura dell’archeologia e dell’architettura religiosa Katholikón sta ad indicare l’oratorio di un monastero. Esso era situato o al centro del cenobio o al centro della laura (o “lavra”)3, ovvero una sorta di villaggio eremitico. Focus di questo lavoro è il Katholikón di San Giovanni Theristis (o Terista), monastero conosciuto anche come “San Giovanni Vecchio” ovvero “San Giovanni tra i due fiumi4”. DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/gjgl.569 RESEARCH Differential Object Marking and the properties of D in the dialects of the extreme south of Italy Adam Ledgeway, Norma Schifano and Giuseppina Silvestri University of Cambridge, Department of Italian, GB Corresponding author: Giuseppina Silvestri ([email protected]) This paper discusses two case studies of microvariation in accusative marking in the Italo- Romance varieties of the extreme south of Italy. In particular, the diatopic variation displayed by the dialects of southern Calabria gives rise to peculiar patterns of alternation between pres- ence or absence of the marker a ‘to’ in flagging the accusative. The realisation of accusative case is partially governed by semantic and referential features, i.e. specificity and animacy. In addition, the nature of the realisation of the D head results in a degree of competition between zero marking and analytic accusative marking with a. Given the century-long co-existence of Latin/Romance and Greek in southern Calabria, the relevant morphosyntactic patterns in Case- marking will also be examined from a language contact perspective. We will highlight how the relevant outcomes do not simply involve borrowing mechanisms or template copying from the lending variety but, rather, produce hybrid structures no longer ascribable to a purely Romance or Greek grammar. EXAMENSARBETE INOM SAMHÄLLSBYGGNAD, AVANCERAD NIVÅ, 30 HP STOCKHOLM, SVERIGE 2019 Urban form, public life and social capital - a case study of how the concepts are related in Calabria, Italy SOFIA HULDT KTH SKOLAN FÖR ARKITEKTUR OCH SAMHÄLLSBYGGNAD Abstract The aim of this thesis is to investigate the urban structure of two Italian towns based upon physical structure and social function. The towns are Bova and Bova Marina in the ancient Greek part of Calabria, Area Grecanica. This is done by answering the research questions about how the urban structures are and what preconditions there are for public life and in extension social capital. This is also compared to the discourse in research about Calabria as a region lacking behind as well as the Greek cultural heritage. The thesis was conducted during one semester spent in the area and based upon qualitative research in form of observations of the towns, mapping, textual analysis and interviews. The results showed that the urban form of the two towns differ from each other because of their history and their localisation. Bova is an ancient town in the mountains that is separated through topography, and therefore conserved with many old structures but few inhabitants, suffering from out-migration. Bova Marina is placed on the coast of the Ionic Sea, south of Bova and connected to the region by train and roads, while Bova is mainly connected to Bova Marina. Bova Marina was founded as a town in late 19th century and expanded a lot because of the railroad. It is a town with inconsistent walking network, a lot of traffic and houses in bad condition.
