Muhammad And The Banu Qurayza What really happened with the Banu Qurayza? Part 1: The siege, the surrender & the intercession of al-Aus After the Battle of the Ditch Muhammad attacks the last of the large Jewish tribes of Medina, the Banu Qurayza. After a 25 days siege, they surrender unconditionally. In the end, all 600-700 males of the tribe are killed and the women and children sold into slavery. Muslims have many versions trying explain away the cruelty of these events and are trying shift them blame away from Muhammad to the Jews themselves. We will not argue the Banu Qurayza are 100% innocent angels, or the Muslims are 100% evil devils. This is not and never was the claim. In every war, both sides commit injustices and do evil things. And in each war, the losing side has to pay some penalty. We do not expect otherwise. But the kind of penalty and its relationship to the crime is a valid question. This paper is an examination of the early Muslim sources to give a detailed account of the events. Instead of responding to various Muslim constructions one by one, since there are as many versions as there is creativity, we will rather look at the account as it is reported by Ibn Ishaq in his word Sirat Rasul Allah available in the abridged edition of Ibn Hisham, and translated by A. Guillaume under the title The Life of Muhammad. This is is by far the oldest (written) account of Muhammad's life in regard to the date of its first composition. -

The first chapter deals with the po litical, social and religious background of ‘ Abd al-M alik, and relates this to his later policy on becoming caliph. Chapter II is devoted to the ‘ Alid opposition of the period, i.e . the revolt of al-Mukhtar ibn Abi ‘ Ubaid al-Thaqafi, and its nature, causes and consequences. The ‘ Asabiyya(tribal feuds), a dominant phenomenon of the Umayyad period, is examined in the third chapter. An attempt is made to throw light on its causes, and on the policies adopted by ‘ Abd al-M alik to contain it. -

The decision of the isolation seems to be one of the most serious of these reactions. Although it is generally called as boycott, in my view it is more appropriate to call it isolation. This decision was not only applied to the Muslim community, but also to those who were non Muslims and supported the Muslims. By this decision, the Prophet Muhammad and His close relatives were subject to isolation in an area called “the District of Abu Talib” for two-three years. Later, this event was described in deep consideration by the Muslim historians.1 In order to be more effectively against Muslims, the idolaters posted this declaration on the wall of Ka’bah. However, when this event bothered the close relatives of Muslims who were subject to a great distress, this decision was annulled and then Muslims were free. Because of this tragic application, some Muslim writers gave some rhetoric and mysterious knowledge in their writings. For example, some writers claimed that the paper of this isolation decision was eaten by desert ants or tree worms except the word of God and Messenger. -
Book Review – a Short History of the Jewish People
Book Review – A Short History of the Jewish People A Short History of the Jewish People, from Legendary Times to Modern Statehood, is a well-regarded and accessible history of a religiously significant people by an acclaimed author. From the Exodus to the Holocaust, the Jews have occupied major roles in Western history, and their triumphs and travails have been encyclopedically documented. Raymond P. Scheindlin, a rabbi and professor of Medieval Hebrew Literature at The Jewish Theological Seminary, has provided a clear and concise text, perfect for an initial overview of the subject. The author begins with the advent of the Hebrew monarchy around 1200 BC. Since its inception, Israel has been a tiny country on the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and as such has been vulnerable to larger and more powerful neighbors. Initially, the Egyptians to the southwest and the Assyrians/Babylonians to the east battled for hegemony in Israel. In the 3rd century BC, the Greeks and Persians became the contenders, followed by the Romans/Byzantines and the Arabs/Persians. Even today major powers such as the United States, Russia, China, the Muslim world, and the Jews fight over this tiny piece of real estate. It is hard to think of any ground on the planet that has heard more hatred, and soaked up more blood. Considering the long history of anti-Semitism throughout the world, culminating in the Holocaust, it is hard to think of any people on the planet that has suffered more, as a percentage of its population, over the millennia. Scheindlin’s discussion of Biblical events is more secular than religious, even from a Jewish perspective, but he provides interesting counterpoints to those used to reading ancient Hebrew history with theological eyes. -

Habib (d. 860) is slim. Almost nothing is known about his father, and even the name ‘Habib’1 is believed to be associated with his mother. Al-Hashimi and al- Baghdadi are two nisbas attached to Ibn Habib, the first of which derives from his mother being a client (mawla) of a Hashimi family, and the second of which implies that Ibn Habib spent a considerable part of his life in Baghdad. -

Journal of Religion & Society Volume 9 (2007) The Kripke Center ISSN 1522-5658 Muhammad’s Jewish Wives Rayhana bint Zayd and Safiya bint Huyayy in the Classic Islamic Tradition Ronen Yitzhak, Western Galilee College, Israel Abstract During his life, the Prophet Muhammad (570-632) married 12 different wives among whom were two Jewish women: Rayhana bint Zayd and Safiya bint Huyayy. These two women were widows whose husbands had been killed in wars with Muslims in Arabia. While Rayhana refused to convert to Islam at first and did so only after massive pressure, Safiya converted to Islam immediately after being asked. Rayhana died a few years before Muhammad, but Safiya lived on after his death. Classic Islamic sources claim that the Muslims did not like Rayhana because of her beauty and so made an issue of her Jewish origin, with Muhammad being the only one to treat her well. After Muhammad’s death, Safiya lived among his other wives in Mecca, but did not take part in the political intrigues at the beginning of Islam, in contrast to the other wives, especially the most dominant and favorite wife, Aisha. Introduction [1] According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad married 12 different wives and had even more concubines. The custom of taking concubines was widespread in ancient times and therefore also was practiced in Arabia. Concubines were often taken in the context of war booty, and it seems that this is the reason for including in the Qur’an: “(you are forbidden) the married women, but not the concubines you, own” (Q 4:24; al-Qurtubi: 5.106). -

Chapter 5 Revolution in Early Islam: The Rise of Islam as a Constitutive Revolution SAÏD AMIR ARJOMAND We conceive of revolution in terms of its great social and political consequences. In a forthcoming comparative and historical study of revolutions, I contrast to the state-centered revolutions of modern times with another ideal-type of revolution which I call the ‘integrative’ revolution (see the Appendix). This ideal type of revolution – which is an aspect of all revolutions – expresses two simple ideas: revolutions 1) bring to power a previously excluded revolutionary elite, and 2) enlarge the social basis of the political regime. This makes integrative revolu- tions not just political but also ‘social revolutions.’ Integrative revolution is in turn divided into three subtypes, the two sub-types I derive from Aristotle-Pareto and Ibn Khaldun are so labeled. The ‘constitutive’ type is my own invention, of- fering the sharpest contrast to the state-centered or ‘Tocquevillian’ type in that it is the typical pattern of radical change in the political order through the enlarge- ment of political community in ‘stateless societies,’ be they of 6th century BCE Greece or 7th century CE Arabia. In addition to this structural typology, we need to come to terms with the mo- tives and goals of the revolutionaries as historical actors, and here I do what may be politically incorrect from the viewpoint of the theory community by using the term teleology, not in the strict Aristotelian sense but rather as a term denoting the directionality of revolution. Through teleology, I seek to capture the distinc- tive direction of a revolution, its intended or intentionally prefigured conse- quences. -

AL-ADWA 41:29 1 The Campaigns of the Prophet The Campaigns of the Prophet and Execution of POWs Atiq ur Rahman* Zia ur Rahman** The Holy Quran neither gives orders relating to the execution of the captives and nor it shows any justification in this regard. The companions of were not in the favour of the execution of prisoners (ﷺ) the Holy Prophet the ,(ﷺ) of Holy Prophet ر( یض ا ہلل عنہ) of war. Out of the companions expositor (Mufasir) of Quran Hazarat Ibn-e-Abbas judged this act as was against the execution of war ر( یض ا ہلل عنہ) illegal(1). Not only Abbas (ﷺ) captives but there is consensus of Sahaba () of the Holy Prophet that the killing of prisoner of war is not legal(2). Most of the mufasireen are also not in favour of execution of the prisoners, these include the names like Hassan, Ata, Ibn-e-Sireen and Mujahid.(3) But on the other hand, during the we find some examples which show that the (ﷺ) era of the Holy Prophet teachings of Islam has kept the option of execution of captives according to the need of circumstances. If the numbers are counted with references from books of Hadith and books of Seerat, there are at maximum ten such people who were practically killed as the prisoners of war, under the decree of and the given numbers only occur when the levels of the (ﷺ) Holy Prophet authenticity of related references are not kept in mind. In other words, the number reached to ten only if the infirm references are also added alongside the correct and authentic references from the stock of books of Hadith and Seerat. -

Tablet of Tribulations (Lawḥ-i Baláyá) Version 1.1 10 February 2015 Translated by William McCants Introduction Baha’u’llah rarely compares his sufferings to those of Muhammad, preferring instead to parallel his mistreatment to that of Muhammad’s martyred grandson Husayn. But the comparison with Muhammad is apt if for no other reason than both men lived long lives as self-proclaimed prophets and died peacefully in their beds. One of the few places Baha’u’llah makes the comparison is in the “Tablet of Tribulations,” written between 1863 and Baha’u’llah’s death in 1892. In it, he draws a stark contrast between his tribulations and those of Muhammad. Given his allusion to the calumnies directed against him by two unnamed individuals, Baha’u’llah probably wrote the tablet during his exile in Istanbul and Edirne between 1863 and 1868 when the Iranian ambassador to the Ottoman Empire and Sayyid Muhammad Isfahani conspired against him. The tablet is not only unique for its subject matter but also for its historical references. Baha’u’llah quotes or paraphrases many early Islamic histories of Muhammad’s life and exegeses of the Qur’an, which is unusual in his tablets. Some of the episodes, especially the massacre and enslavement of a Jewish tribe, are rarely treated elsewhere in Baha’u’llah’s voluminous works. I have included footnotes to provide some background from the Islamic sources. To my knowledge, no one has written about the tablet in any language other than a brief note by Fadil Mazandirani (Asrar al-Athar, 5:256) identifying its recipient as Sayyid Mahdi Dahaji.
