Hayward MC Go’s “Old School” On the Cowbell By Cliff Streib

We hear from many riders that they would like to try a standard format (time & distance) Enduro, but don't want to have to buy a computer in order to ride the event and be com- petitive. So, our solution is to have two "Old School" classes run af- ter the standard "A, B, & C" classes. The classes will be run just as an Enduro would have been done in the days before computers. You go on the course with a watch, a route chart ("JART" charts OK), and some form of odometer, but NO com- puters allowed!! It will be run on the exact same course as the A,B,&C classes. The two "Old School" classes will run just after the "C" class. The two classes will be "0 to 240cc" and "241ccs

News & UP". Riders riding the "Old School" classes will not be scored for the year end awards in District 36. This is just so riders can get out and experience what an enduro is all about! Riders will get Finisher Pins upon finishing the course to show that the rode the whole course. All standard Enduro rules and scoring will apply. The bikes must pass a "Tech" inspec- tion & Sound check. The Rider will need to pay an entry fee plus have valid AMA & Dis-

36 trict 36 cards (Both one day OR one year cards will be available at the sigh-ups). We're hoping to see an interest in this new format, and if this proves to be a popular class, The Hayward will do this every year, and maybe some other clubs might add this class to their events as well. Further info can be obtained at HAY- WARDMC.COM or by contacting Club members. Any exposure of these new opportunities to the riding public would be greatly appreci- ated. Thanks, Cliff Streib, Hayward Motorcycle Club.

Class information for the “old School Class….. A) Riders will be able to pre-sign for this class ($10.00 saving by pre-signing). The class will be listed in a separate box on our flyer that is available on the District website www.ama-d36.org and our website www.haywardmc.com. Also, Sign-ups are also possi- ble the evening of Nov. 6th, and after 6:00AM on the 7th. Overnight basic camping is available (no hook-ups) and there are motel rooms (10 miles away) and casino rooms (13 miles away). B) The route is approximately 80 miles long and the rider must bring an approved gas can for us to take to the half-way point on the route. For safety, the bike should be able to go 50 miles on a tankful of gas.

District C) Trophies will be awarded in each class as per the district rules (the more riders, the more trophies per class) rights ✪ riding ✪ racing District 36 News Page 2

Chaplain Fred’s Column

For the 30 years that I’ve been racing District events, I’ve devel- oped so many great relationships with people that District 36 has truly been my second family.

Now, as I’ve been left with such an empty hole in my heart after losing Sue – my right arm – I’m so much more aware of what Jesus was trying to teach us in Matthew 7.

“Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you” . . . “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened” . . . “Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them…”

Over the years, I’ve helped comfort and counsel many of you and your family members during illnesses, injuries and tragedies, or after the loss of a loved one. I’ve led funeral services for some and that is a difficult task.

Now, many of you have been reaching out to offer me support and to help me during my time of loss. I cannot properly express just how much your cards, phone calls, donations, hugs and tears really mean to me. I’m grateful that we – as a family and as friends – can share these things with each other.

Don’t miss a single opportunity to say ‘I love you’ to your family and friends. Don’t forget to back up those words with actions that show them that you love them, too. We all need to remember that treating each other right, caring about each other and loving each other is God’s will. The 360 degrees of Life is full of choices. It is up to each of us to choose whether we see things from the negative, or whether we see things from the positive. It is up to each of us to choose if we are going to be unhappy, or if we are going to be happy.

One of the greatest blessings we have is our children, including the racing children of D36. Seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter brings me such joy!

My plan is to continue racing until I’m 80 remain. I can’t wait to see, hug and thank all of you, my D36 family, at the next race! Fred Sumrall rights ✪ riding ✪ racing District 36 News Page 5

Marin County Motorcycle Association Celebrating 50 Years by Dave Pickett

Marin County Motorcycle Association just celebrated its 50th Anniversary as a club.

In early September, they threw a party on the riding property in Marin County that was host to well over 500 folks from all over the country. It was more of a festival type event, with a huge covered dining area, great food, beverages and music. It was such a treat to be invit- ed and attend this gala where I saw many friends I had not seen in years. MCMA sure knows how to throw a party. On the microphone was Moto Mouth and did introductions of some of the original MCMA club members talk- ing about the history of the club and the hard work it took to secure the location way back in 1965. This is MARIN County we are talking about ya know…..

Later, BRC Don Amador and yours truly were invited up to the podium, and were blessed with a replica of a check that was 2X4 foot long for donations to both BRC and the D36 LAO Program.

A good time was had by all, and quite the celebration. A few folks rode in on antique , including one Norton that must have been from the 40’s or early 1950’s.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MCMA MEMBERS FOR THIS HISTORIC MILESTONE! rights ✪ riding ✪ racing District 36 News Page 8

2015 AMA HALL OF FAME BOUND

Rodney Smith & Alex Jorgensen, former members of District 36 were inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame.

Both cut their teeth in D36 Amateur racing, with Smith in Off Road and Jorgensen in Dirt Track. Both went on to successful careers in as Pro’s and won National Titles.

District 36 is proud, as these nominations for the Hall of Fame are so well deserved. Induction will take place in Florida at the AIM Expo Dealer Show and AMA Induction at the Chapin Theatre.

PS: D36 Renewal Mem- bership Applications have been mailed to them!

Wow this is really neat, I sit here in the comfort of my home and watch Brian Garrahan tear it up in the first day of the SixDays on the District 36 Facebook page. This was on the SAME DAY as the event! As much as the electronic media of today is a huge amount of work I think its worth it. As the president it's my task to keep the District abreast of the many things the District is involved in. And now (almost) all involve electronic media. In this age of instant everything, I recognize that the District must try and be at the cut- ting edge of electronic media, all media from Instagram, to Facebook, to our website. Even our scoring is an electronic marvel. We recognize that our existence as a viable business community, and land use advo- cate is dependent on our successful interaction with every single one of our members. To that end we are always looking for experienced folks that are willing to help the District get up to speed with the many social media outlets out there, as well as our newsletter. Write an article for our newsletter, or help us get more involved with Instagram. There is an incredible talent pool out there of rid- ers and family that can showcase our sport for the benefit of everyone. Our community is small compared to others and we really need those committed individuals to help our com- munity stay informed and continue to thrive and be alive. So if you have an interest in helping our district (electronically and otherwise) please con- tact Bill McGibbon or myself to help us keep our members informed and help us keep our riding and racing areas open to all. Fall Enduro’s arE HErE! By John Davis…..

By the time this is released the first round of the Fall enduro series should be in the books. It will be the last Desert Enduro for who knows how long. Well at least till we can talk WSRA into it again. Thanks WSRA for the years of the Wild Horse Enduro. One of my all time favorite events was a HH put on by WSRA from Lovelock to Fernley in 1997. We went down the 2 step hill in the first 15 miles of 140 miles. Bring that one back! As some of you may have heard there are a few giveaways for the Enduro series this year. DDNMC has donated Hangtown tickets for the A classes. IRC has donated Tires and Tubes for the B and C classes. What classes at what events was set up before the series started. The DDNMC awards will be awarded to the best score of the selected A class at the first check. The IRC awards will be awarded to the first place finisher in the selected B or C class. The selected class for each event will be posted at the event. I almost forgot, I also have an ICO Checkmate donated by ICO to giveaway. Now what to do with that (mount it on my bike). Maybe hand it to some lucky contestant at the Banquet. Remember that you can get points for working an event if you are a club member or not. But do contact the club well ahead of time before the event if you would like work it. It is up to the club and some that just show up at the last minute may be turned away if not needed.

LOW TECH TIP!

Have you ever done repairs or a restoration on your bike, and always seemed to come up short on one bolt, or spe- cial piece that you had to jerry rig or special order from a dealer and wait a week or two to finish? I have, and it is frustrating.

By accident, I found a company that makes complete bolt/hardware/fastener kits for nearly every bike out there that has everything in one place, bike model specif- ic.

My DRZ 400E – Dual Sport is/was in need of some work, and almost all the nuts and bolts looked ratty, rusty, ugh – crappy. As I checked OEM prices for many of the parts, they are pricey at OEM level. Then I found a compa- ny, Specbolt.com – and checked it out. Leery at first, I pulled the plug and ordered a 120 piece kit, and was very pleased at what I received. Pretty much everything I need- ed, $29.00 bucks and free freight……………… that price blew away OEM stuff. Average price PER item is .24 cents. One bolt I needed, OEM Suzuki was $5.17, so you see the value. Check them out. Dave Pickett D36

D36 MEMBER RUNNING FOR THE AMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS The AMA Board of Directors Election is coming.

D36 LIFE MEMBER TED CABRAL has submitted nomination papers to AMA advising he is running for the position of North West Board of Director which includes District 36.

Ted has impressive credentials for this position, and will bring a wealth of knowledge to the position from a lifelong involvement in D36 racing, in- cluding a stint as an MX Pro. Also his family has been involved in the mo- torcycle industry as a dealer in Petaluma –Cycle West. This knowledge of motorcycle sport, including AMA activities, suits him as a great repre- sentative for the NW Region of AMA as well as District 36 members and D36 itself as a non-profit organization. You can review the entire Region on the AMA website.

Ted’s other life history includes being a Governor appointed member of the Off Highway Vehicle Motorized Recreation Division of Ca State Parks. He is currently the Chairman of this commission and was originally ap- pointed as a committee member in 2013. Ted became very involved with motorcycling in 1969 when his parents opened a dealership, so his history with our District and motorcycling speaks volumes totaling 46+ years.

This experience, along with appointments to other agencies such as the Sonoma County Zone 2 Flood Advisory Committee has taught him government protocol, es- pecially in areas of geological erosion and sediment control, as well as working on master flood and drainage plans. Ted is also a member of Marin County Motorcy- cle Association and a Charter Life Member of the AMA. Ted also has interfaced in in Ca Water Resources Board and US EPA on Super Fund Mercury Mine clean up. Currently he, as Chair of the OHV Commission, is heavily involved with D36 LAO in the Red Sticker issues of Ca Air Resources Board and OHV funding issues.

As the LAO for D36, I believe we could not have a better candidate to represent D36 and the entire NW Region and this is where you come in. He has to deal with another candidate from Oregon so we must SUPPORT one of our own for this posi- tion. On the BOD, and with interface with other AMA BOD members, he can educate them as to west coast issues of motorcycling with his knowledge of our issues from CCMA to USFS & BLM Permits and work with the AMA Government Relations Department. Ted’s background can assist in many ways for OHV, Racing and D36. He believes in Rights*Riding*Racing and can carry the message of our issues.

I strongly urge all D36 Members and friends that are AMA members to VOTE for Ted. He is the right guy at the right time with the right experience to replace Perry King who is termed out. This position is unpaid, and Ted will be a volunteer on YOUR behalf………….

First, all of us come upon challenges on the trail and we make the decision to seek out a solution to the obstacle. Sometimes when we are looking for a solution we discover a hidden talent that we have, thru balance, throttle control or absolute com- mitment. Often this discovery becomes a part of our riding style and helps us as we go forward. In this issue of the newsletter I want to commend all of the riders who participate in events and are the good citi- zens' and role models for the young riders. Sportsmanship and positive attitude is important. For these riders who stay on the course and pass the sound check thank you for being good role models. Now for the riders who short cut the course and don't keep the quiet core in your pipe, let me ask you, is it really worth risking the riding area for all of us? Valley Climbers MC / District 36 Website Release Tuesday, September 15, 2015 Napa, CA

It is with much regret that the Valley Climbers Motorcycle Club, promoters of WFO Enduro (Final Round #7 of the District 36 Northern California Championship Enduro Series / Final Round #9 of the Western Check- point Enduro Championship), have cancelled the upcoming 2015 Enduro event scheduled for Sunday, Novem- ber 15, 2015 near Stonyford, CA in the USFS Grindstone Ranger District.

Due to difficulties in obtaining the required Special Use Permits to operate this event on Federal public land in the 2015 calendar year, the Valley Climbers Motorcycle Club has made the decision to cancel the event for 2015 and will concentrate on working closely with our Forest Service partners over the next year to ensure the WFO Enduro is back on the Enduro schedule for 2016.

The Valley Climbers MC will still be staging a club campout and celebration of our 50 Year anniversary over the previously scheduled WFO Enduro weekend at the Davis Flat Campground near Stonyford. OHV Enthusiasts are invited to participate in a free, guided family fun trail ride showcasing some of the best trails and routes the Stonyford OHV Area has to offer on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at approximately 10:00AM, with a Valley Climbers MC golden anniversary celebration to follow in the evening.

Thank you to all our supporters, and we look forward to you enduro riders coming back strong in 2016.

…….Rule Changes For 2016 Continued

11.2.11.1 Results must be prepared and sent to all riders within one month of the meet. The results must indicate the number of entrants and trophies awarded in each class and the name of the rider, his starting number, make of ma- chine, points lost, the name of his club or sponsors, and his District 36 and AMA Membership Card numbers. (Rev: Dec 2015)

If a club awards trophies the same day as their event, those results will become official 30 minutes after they have been posted, unless they have been protested.

11.3.1 A Brand Q Enduro, is an amateur meet designed to measure the skill of the rider, without placing emphasis up- on timekeeping ability. It is conducted over paths, roads, trails, and other natural terrain. There are known checks and timed sections where riders accumulate points. The rider in this timed event with the fewest points accumulated is the winner. (Rev: Dec 2015)

11.3.8.2; Paragraph A; One point for every second a rider is within a timed section.

11.3.8.4 Timed Sections (note this is only a wording change)

11.3.8.4.1 Timed Sections may start or end anywhere on the course. The start of a Timed Section is known as a check- In Check. The end of a Timed Section is known as a Check-Out Check. The location of the Check-Ins and Check-Outs shall be unknown to riders until they are encountered on the course.

11.3.8.4.3 All riders must stop at Check-Ins. Riders will enter Timed Sections at 15-second intervals as directed by Check personnel. When a rider is in-line for the start of the Timed Section, the start of the Timed Section will begin on the next available 15-second interval even if the rider is not ready. Rider scorecards shall be marked at all Check-Ins and a back-up scoring book shall be used. An alternative primary and secondary scoring system may be used, at a check in, with the approval of the Enduro Steward.

11.3.8.4.5 Check-In and Check-Out check clocks will use and display real time. The clock’s real time display must be visible to the rider as they cross the Timed Section start or finish line. If enough District clocks are not available for all the Timed Sections, Timed Section crews can use reliable and accurate digital watches. The same watches must be used at the start and end of the Timed Section for the duration of the event. If watches are used, the promoting organi- zation must notify the riders at sign-in, the rider’s meeting or at the start line.

11.3.8.4.6 Scoring for each Timed Section shall be determined by subtracting each rider’s Check-In time from their Check-Out time. A register of these times must be kept by check personnel.

11.3.8.4.7 There shall be a minimum of two (2) Timed Sections in a Brand Q Enduro.

11.3.8.4.8 Timed Sections may consist of motocross tracks, grass tracks, or terrain sections.

11.3.10.1 The promoting organization is responsible for scoring the event. Results must be prepared and sent to all riders within one month of the event. The results must indicate the number of entrants and medals awarded in each class and the name of the rider, rider number, District and AMA card number, make of machine, points lost at each Timed Section and Known Check, and the name of their club or sponsors. If a club awards medals the same day as their event, those results will become official 30 minutes after they have been posted. (Rev: Dec 2015) rights ✪ riding ✪ racing District 36 News Page 33
