The author, year of publication and page number, synonyms, distribution by country, and a terminal bibliography are given for each genus and species. Biological information is also reviewed. www.nature.com/scientificreports Corrected: Author Correction OPEN Hidden diversity in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest: the discovery of Jurasaidae, a new beetle family (Coleoptera, Elateroidea) with neotenic females Simone Policena Rosa1, Cleide Costa2, Katja Kramp3 & Robin Kundrata4* Beetles are the most species-rich animal radiation and are among the historically most intensively studied insect groups. Consequently, the vast majority of their higher-level taxa had already been described about a century ago. In the 21st century, thus far, only three beetle families have been described de novo based on newly collected material. Here, we report the discovery of a completely new lineage of soft-bodied neotenic beetles from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest, which is one of the most diverse and also most endangered biomes on the planet. We identifed three species in two genera, which difer in morphology of all life stages and exhibit diferent degrees of neoteny in females. We provide a formal description of this lineage for which we propose the new family Jurasaidae. Molecular phylogeny recovered Jurasaidae within the basal grade in Elateroidea, sister to the well-sclerotized rare click beetles, Cerophytidae. This placement is supported by several larval characters including the modifed mouthparts. The discovery of a new beetle family, which is due to the limited dispersal capability and cryptic lifestyle of its wingless females bound to long-term stable habitats, highlights the importance of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest as a top priority area for nature conservation. Coleoptera (beetles) is by far the largest insect order by number of described species. Approximately 400,000 species have been described, and many new ones are still frequently being discovered even in regions with histor- ically high collecting activity1. -

And why are they important? What’s the difference between Arthropods and Insects? Most of this guide is comprised of insects. These are animals that have three body segments- head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs, and usually have wings, although there are several wingless forms of insects. Insects are of the Class Insecta and they make up the largest class of the phylum called Arthropoda (arthropods). However, the phylum Arthopoda includes other groups as well including Crustacea (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, etc.), Myriapoda (millipedes, centipedes, etc.) and Arachnida (scorpions, king crabs, spiders, mites, ticks, etc.). Arthropods including insects and all other animals in this phylum are characterized as animals with a tough outer exoskeleton or body-shell and flexible jointed limbs that allow the animal to move. Although this guide is comprised mostly of insects, some members of the Myriapoda and Arachnida can also be found here. Remember they are all arthropods but only some of them are true ‘insects’. Entomologist - A scientist who focuses on the study of insects! What’s bugging entomologists? Although we tend to call all insects ‘bugs’ according to entomology a ‘true bug’ must be of the Order Hemiptera. So what exactly makes an insect a bug? Insects in the order Hemiptera have sucking, beak-like mouthparts, which are tucked under their “chin” when Metallic Green Bee (Agapostemon sp.) not in use. -

Appendix E: Arthropods Appendices 607 The arthropods are animals that have an exoskeleton and jointed legs. They are by far the most numerous life form on Earth, both in the number of species and in the number of individuals. There are over fi ve times more species of arthropods than all other species in the entire animal kingdom. Except for fl at worms and a few others, arthropods are among the oldest terrestrial creatures. Fossilized impressions of primi- tive crustaceans have been found in 550-million-year-old shale deposits. The phylum Arthropoda includes: • insects • spiders • crustaceans • centipedes • millipedes Common names more familiar to us are used to refer to either a non-specifi c group of living things or to a specifi c type of arthropod. As an example, we can use the term “ bug” when referring to anything from a microbe to a big insect. To people who study insects it specifi cally means a little insect that has its mouth parts modifi ed into a piercing beak. There is no harm in using common names as long as care is taken to assure that both the speaker and listener agree what it refers to. Here both scientifi c and common names are used. Scientifi c names describe arthropods by common char- acteristics from class to family to species. Class Insecta There are 26 orders of insects found in North America. This appendix limits its dis- cussion to insects that are most commonly found in the Rio Grande bosque. Class Insecta includes fl ies, beetles, butterfl ies, grasshoppers, bees, etc. -

In this study, we used X-ray microcom- puted tomography to reconstruct the morphology of a specimen of the beetle family Ptilodactylidae from Eocene Baltic amber. The studied specimen represents a new species of the large and wide- spread genus Ptilodactyla Illiger, 1807. It is the first described fossil species of the genus and also of the subfamily Ptilodactylinae. Our discovery sheds further light on the paleodiversity and evolution of the family as well as on the faunal composition of the European Eocene amber forests.
