FOCUS ON SHACKLETON Brilliant ideas to get your students thinking creatively about polar exploration, with links across a wide range of subjects including maths, art, geography, science and literacy. WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? WHO? AURORA AUSTRALIS This book was made in the Antarctic by Shackleton’s men during the winter of 1908. It contains poems, accounts, stories, pictures and entertainment all written by the men during the 1907-09 Nimrod expedition. The copy in our archive has a cover made from pieces of packing crates. The book is stitched with green silk cord thread and held together with a spine made from seal skin. The title and the penguin stamp were glued on afterwards. DID YOU KNOW? To entertain the men during the long, cold winter months of the Nimrod Expedition, Shackleton packed a printing press. Before the expedition set off Ernest Joyce and Frank Wild received training in typesetting and printing. In the hut at Cape Royds the men wrote and practised their printing techniques. All through the winter different men wrote pieces for the book. The expedition artist, George Marston, produced the illustrations. Bernard Day constructed the book using packing crates that had stored butter. This was the first book to be published in the Antarctic. It has been almost a full year since the last catalogue and over this time a lot of changes have occurred around the shop. First of all, the shop is now only open Monday to Friday by appointment. There is almost always someone here but we ask anyone making a special trip to phone ahead. We are still open on Saturdays from 10:30 to 4 pm. We have also hired a new staff member, Lesley Ball. She will be working half time and you may meet her if you call with an order. This year we gave the California fairs a miss, but Katie and I had a great time in New York this year, meeting a number of customers, both old and new, at the fair. We also now have an Instagram page which Katie maintains for us; please check us out at aquila_books for the latest news and a great image of our booth at the New York fair. British Antarctic Survey History The United Kingdom has a long and distinguished record of scientific exploration in Antarctica. Before the creation of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), there were many surveying and scientific expeditions that laid the foundations for modern polar science. These ranged from Captain Cook’s naval voyages of the 18th century, to the famous expeditions led by Scott and Shackleton, to a secret wartime operation to secure British interests in Antarctica. Today, BAS is a world leader in polar science, maintaining the UK’s long history of Antarctic discovery and scientific endeavour. The early years Britain’s interests in Antarctica started with the first circumnavigation of the Antarctic continent by Captain James Cook during his voyage of 1772-75. Cook sailed his two ships, HMS Resolution and HMS Adventure, into the pack ice reaching as far as 71°10' south and crossing the Antarctic Circle for the first time. He discovered South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands although he did not set eyes on the Antarctic continent itself. His reports of fur seals led many sealers from Britain and the United States to head to the Antarctic to begin a long and unsustainable exploitation of the Southern Ocean. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, interest in Antarctica was largely focused on the exploitation of its surrounding waters by sealers and whalers. The discovery of the South Shetland Islands is attributed to Captain William Smith who was blown off course when sailing around Cape Horn in 1819. -
