British Big Cat British Big Cat Eine British Big Cat ist eine out-of-Place Sichtung von Großkatzen auf den britischen Inseln. Von den britischen Inseln stammen die meisten Sichtungsberichte von out-of-Place Großkatzen. Sie haben teilweise sogar regionale Namen bekommen, wie der Surrey Puma und die Bestie von Exmoor. Grundsätzlich sind viele Großkatzen in der Lage, mit dem mitteleuropäischen Klima zurecht zu kommen und zu überleben. Pumas, einige Leopardenformen und Amurtiger leben teilweise unter deutlich härteren klimatischen Bedingungen. Die britischen Inseln sind aufgrund fehlender großer Beutegreifer sehr reich an Wild, so dass die Lebensbedingungen für diese Katzen gegeben sind. Für den Ursprung dieser Tiere gibt es mehrere Theorien: 1976 wurde im „Dangerous Wild Animals Act“ (dt. Gesetz über gefährliche Wildtiere) die Haltung von Großkatzen als Haustiere deutlich erschwert. In den 1960ern -70ern war es bei reichen und vor allem Neureichen Briten Mode, Käfige mit Großkatzen zu besitzen. Einige dieser Tiere wurden sogar an der Leine geführt, im Londoner Kaufhaus Harrods konnte man junge Großkatzen kaufen. Das Gesetz erhöhte die Hürden für die Haltung von Affen, Raubtieren, großen oder giftigen Reptilien, gefährlichen Spinnen und Skorpionen. Hierfür wurde eine Lizenz notwendig, für die der Lizenznehmer angeben musste, welche Tiere er wo und wie pflegte. Die Lizenz wurde nur erteilt, wenn die Behörde davon überzeugt war, dass die Tiere sicher und artgerecht untergebracht sind. Eine Versicherung war ebenfalls notwendig. Durch diese Auflagen wurde die Haltung der Tiere oft so erschwert und verteuert, dass die Besitzer sie abgeben wollten. Das dadurch entstandene Überangebot und die teuren Auflagen ließen den Markt zusammenbrechen, niemand wollte eine Großkatze auch nur geschenkt. Das Gesetz verbot nicht, die Tiere auszusetzen oder ausbrechen zu lassen. Dieses Schlußfloch wurde erst 1982 beseitigt. In der Zwischenzeit hätten viele Halter die Möglichkeit gehabt, Tiere auszusetzen. Ob es dazu in mehr als Einzelfällen gekommen ist, wird nicht mehr zu klären sein. In Großbritannien gibt es Wildkatzen, die etwas größer als übliche Hauskatzen sind. Fehlt ein Größenmaßstab, kann ein Augenzeuge bei größerer Entfernung bei der Beurteilung der Größe einer Katze irren. Die Römer brachten einzelne Grokatzen für ihre Circus- Veranstaltungen mit. Hier kam es mit Sicherheit auch zu einzelnen Ausbrüchen, aber ob sich über 2000 Jahre lang versteckte Populationen erhalten konnten, ist fraglich. Großbritannien wurde nach der letzten Eiszeit von Großkatzen besiedelt. Sie haben versteckt über lange Zeit ihre Populationen aufrecht erhalten können. Zu den letzten beiden Theorien ist zu beachten, dass die Briten in geschichtlicher Zeit Wolf, Braunbär, Wildschwein und Wisent ausgerottet haben. Bei diesen, teilweise gezielten und koordinierten Aktionen wären Großkatzen sicher aufgefallen und ebenfalls ausgerottet worden. Dermoplastik des 1980 in Schottland eingefangenen Pumas Felicity im Museum Inverness Physische Beweise für British-Big-Cats existieren wenige. Mehr oder weniger regelmäßig werden Beobachtungen und Angriffe auf Hunde in den lokalen Medien veröffentlicht. Mehr als skelettierte Reste von Hirschen als angebliche Risse und unklare Fußabdrücke findet man selten. Mit Felicity, einer Puma-Katze existiert der Beleg für ein Einzeltier: Felicity wurde 1980 in Schottland gefangen, nachdem einige Jahre vorher Sichtungsberichte auftraten. Felicity liebte noch eine Weile im Highland Wildlife Park bei Kingussie, Schottland. Beim Fang war sie in exzellenter Verfassung. Die Angaben, ob das Tier kurz oder lange in Freiheit lebte, sind widersprüchlich. 2011 untersuchte die Universität Durham Haare aus Nord-Devon. DNA in den Haaren bewies, das ein Leopard in der Gegend lebte. Im folgenden Jahr fand man an zwei Hirschkadavern nur Fuchs- DNA. Er sei zuerst sehr erschrocken gewesen, habe dann aber festgestellt, dass sich das Tier nicht mehr bewegte. Er verständigte unmittelbar die Provinzpolizei. Als die Polizeipatrouille das Tier untersuchte, stellte sie fest, dass es definitiv tot war. Ein Sprecher der Polizei identifizierte die Riesenschlange als Python – ein Tier, das am oberen Comer See und dem nahen Naturreservat Pian di Spagna natürlich nicht vorkommt. Der Kadaver war vier Meter lang und maß etwa zwanzig Zentimeter im Durchmesser. Es müsse sich um ein ausgebüxte „Haustier“ handeln, mutmaßte die Polizei (bereits in den Vorjahren wurden Pythonkadaver im Gardasee angeschwemmt). „Es gibt spezielle Schlangenfarmen, allerdings nicht in der Provinz Como“, erklärte Marco Testa, der Kommandant der Provinzpolizei. „Eine gezüchtete Python ist eigentlich wenig gefährlich, sie kann sich aber an jede Art von Tier klammern, auch an große, die sie zerquetscht und dann auffrisst; das gleiche könnte natürlich auch einem Menschen passieren.“ Er nimmt an, dass die Python ihrem Halter entkommen sei und dann verhungerte, weil sie keine Nahrung fand.

Newsletter of the Department of Ecology & Biodiversity, The University of Hong Kong The empty forest In Hong Kong’s climate, forest is the natural vegetation everywhere. It can be suppressed by regular cutting or burning, but the harvesting of biomass for fuel ended decades ago and fires, although still common, are less often started and more rapidly controlled near urban areas than next to rural villages. An increase in the area of forest is therefore an inevitable, if paradoxical, consequence of the increasing urbanisation of the New Territories. Hong Kong Island, where the last grassland is disappearing under a tidal wave of shrubs and trees, illustrates the future for the whole territory. Within fifty years, forest will cover most of Hong Kong. Good news for native biodiversity, surely? Well…yes… partly. It is true that many of our most diverse inland sites are in forest, but these are areas that have had continuous tree cover for centuries, as a result of inaccessibility or the protection of feng shui. The much larger areas of young secondary forest are a lot less diverse. Even at the best sites, the diversity is in the plants and invertebrates – organisms that can persist in the tiniest of forest patches. Vertebrates do not survive in such situations so Hong Kong has lost most species that require forest. The new forests are therefore empty in comparison with the larger, older forest areas in Guangdong, and even more so if compared with what must have been here a thousand years ago. There are no reliable records for Hong Kong from before the nineteenth century, when the vertebrate fauna was already impoverished.

Some day, when the full history is written - sober history with ample documents - the poor romancer will give up business and fall to reading Miss Austen in a hermitage. The characters of the tale, if you think hard, you will recall. Sandy you know well. That great spirit was last heard of at Basra, where he occupies the post that once was Harry Bullivant's. Richard Hannay is where he longed to be, commanding his battalion on the ugliest bit of front in the West. Mr John S. Blenkiron, full of honour and wholly cured of dyspepsia, has returned to the States, after vainly endeavouring to take Peter with him.

    Kryptozoologische Presseschau 36/2020 – von Büchern, Haien und Bären Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, wie immer montags gibt es auch diese Woche die kryptozoologische Presseschau. Natürlich haben wir auch diese Woche für euch eine Menge Nachrichten gesammelt, aber ein Ereignis erscheint uns darüber hinaus sehr erwähnenswert: Das „Jahrbuch für Kryptozoologie“ 2020 ist fertig. Natale Guido Cincinnati, Reena Pöschel, André Kramer und Hans-Jörg Vogel haben in vielen Monaten Arbeit zahlreiche Autoren gefunden und überzeugt, für das Jahrbuch zu schreiben. So stehen in dieser Anthologie Arbeiten von Autoren aus mindestens vier nicht deutschsprachigen Ländern. Da die Herausgeber – wie alle im Netzwerk für Kryptozoologie – kostenlos gearbeitet haben, ist das Jahrbuch für einen ausgesprochen günstigen Preis von € 12,90 erhältlich. Für deutlich einfacher produzierte Symposiumsbände in ähnlicher Aufmachung zahlt man locker 20 € – wenn man sie bekommt. Das Jahrbuch kann direkt hier bestellt werden. Das „Jahrbuch für Kryptozoologie“ sei jedem Leser und jeder Leserin ans Herz gelegt. Foto: N.G. Cincinnati von Haien… Doch auch an anderen Fronten hat sich einiges ereignet. Die Uni Bristol hat eine Studie veröffentlicht, die sich mit den Ausmaßen des GroßzahnhaisOtodus megalodon befasst. Bemerkenswert ist neben den Ergebnissen auch, dass diese Studie im Rahmen einer Doktorarbeit entstanden ist. Die Ergebnisse wurden dann in den scientific reports von nature veröffentlicht, sicherlich alles andere als üblich für ein solches Format. Die nummerischen Ergebnisse sind nicht besonders überraschend. Keines der ermittelten Maße liegt deutlich außerhalb des Erwarteten. Wesentlich ungewöhnlicher ist jedoch die Feststellung, dass Makrelenhaie, zu denen auch Megalodon oder der Weiße Hai gehören, während ihres Wachstums keine relevanten Änderungen ihrer Körperform und -proportionen durchlaufen.
