They do not only present a nuisance to fishermen, but evidence suggests that they compete with native benthic fishes and may contribute to changes in ecosystem function. The principal food of all three species is invertebrates, and more rarely fish, which depends on the type of habitat, part of the year, as well as the morphological characteristics of species. According to the von Bertalanffy growth model, size at age is specific for the region, but due to its disadvantages it is necessary to test other growth models. Executive Summary Aim Environmental assessment of hydropower facilities commonly includes means of fish assem- blage impact metrics, as e.g. injuries or mortality. However, this hardly allows for conclusion at the population or community level. To overcome this significant knowledge gap and to enable more efficient assessments, this task aimed in developing a fish species classification system according to their species-specific sensitivity against mortality. As one result, most sensitive fish species were identified as suitable candidates for in depth population effects and impact studies. Another objective was providing the biological and autecological baseline for developing a fish population hazard index for the European fish fauna. Methods The literature has been extensively reviewed and analysed for life history traits of fish providing resilience against and recovery from natural disturbances. The concept behind is that species used to cope with high natural mortality have evolved buffer mechanisms against, which might also foster recovery from human induced disturbances. -

With more than 1700 species of gobies spread among more than 200 genera, gobies are the most species-rich family of marine fishes. Gobies can be found in nearly every aquatic habitat on earth, and are often the most diverse and numerically abundant fishes in tropical and subtropical habitats, especially coral reefs. Their remarkable taxonomic, morphological and ecological diversity make them an ideal model group for studying the processes driving taxonomic and phenotypic diversification in aquatic vertebrates. Unfortunately the phylogenetic relationships of many groups of gobies are poorly resolved, obscuring our understanding of the evolution of their ecological diversity. This dissertation is a multi-scale phylogenetic study that aims to clarify phylogenetic relationships across the Gobiidae and demonstrate the utility of this family for studies of macroevolution and speciation at multiple evolutionary timescales. -

In 59 specimens of Sq.orpheus, four specimens of intestinal helminths are fixed (Allocreadium isoporum (Kowal et Kulakowskaja, 1957); Caryophyllaeus brachycollis (Janiszewska, 1951); Pomphorhynchus laevis (Müller, 1776); Rhabdochona denudata (Dujardin, 1845)). P. laevis is distinguished with the highest prevalence and mean intensity (66.10% and 1.85, respectively). A. isoporum, P. laevis and Rh. denudata are core species for the helminth communities of Orpheus dace, while C. brachycollis is a component species. The eutrophication effects on the pathways of the parasitic flow and the structure of the helminth communities were traced. The bioindicator significance of the parasitic complexes was discussed. In France, the number of alien aquatic plant and animal species has increased exponentially over time in freshwater ecosystems and shows no sign of decreasing. For fish only, more than 40 alien species have been either voluntary or involuntary introduced in the past decades. About two-thirds are still pres- ent today and at least 26 are naturalized. As in many European countries, the fish intro- duction history in France switched from voluntary introduction in the nineteenth century (aquaculture, sport fishing, and management of ecosystems) to unintentional but human- aided introductions (aquarium trade and global ship transport). The negative impacts of alien species on native species and ecosystems are most often unknown in France and needs further studies to develop a functional policy on alien species introductions and the protection of aquatic ecosystems integrity. The information gathered allow discussing the possible reasons explaining whether an alien species is able or not to establish sustainable populations in France and thereafter became invasive, such as gobies recently arrived. Within Kthe United States, Kentucky’s native freshwater fish diversity is exceeded only by Alabama and Tennessee. This high diversity of native fishes corresponds to an abun- dance of water bodies and wide variety of aquatic habitats across the state – from swift upland streams to large sluggish rivers, oxbow lakes, and wetlands. Approximately 25 species are most frequently caught by anglers either for sport or food. Many of these species occur in streams and rivers statewide, while several are routinely stocked in public and private water bodies across the state, especially ponds and reservoirs. The largest proportion of Kentucky’s fish fauna (80%) includes darters, minnows, suckers, madtoms, smaller sunfishes, and other groups (e.g., lam- preys) that are rarely seen by most people. -
