Mrinal Sen The Absence Trilogy: And Quite Rolls the Dawn (Ekdin Pratidin); The Case is Closed (Kharij); Suddenly, One Day (Ekdin Achanak) 9788170460954 Seagull, 1999 1999 The Absence Trilogy: And Quite Rolls the Dawn (Ekdin Pratidin); The Case is Closed (Kharij); Suddenly, One Day (Ekdin Achanak) Over the Years Cinewave, Issues 2-4 Views on Cinema Always Being Born Chasing the Truth Sen experienced his own âœten years of a masterâ in the decade from And Quiet Rolls the Day in 1979 to Suddenly One Day (Ekdin Achanak) in 1989. (The repetition of âœEk Dinâ in their respective Bengali titles, meaning âœone day,â augtments this sense of bookended symmetry.) In The Case Is Closed, a servant boyâ™s choice to move from his assigned sleeping space under the stairs into the kitchen for one night of warmth proves fatal, precipitating a moral crisis for his oblivious masters. Perhaps imposing order retroactively, Sen pronounced that three of his ambiguous, calculatedly inconclusive family dramasâ”And Quiet Rolls the Day, The Ruins, and Suddenly One Dayâ”comprise âœthe absence trilogy.â â˜Ek Din Pratidinâ™ (And Quiet Rolls the Dawn) (1979) undeniably establishes Senâ™s feminist credentials. The movie is a haunting tale of deep-rooted patriarchy ingrained in the Indian value system and questions the ethical standings of the viewers. â˜Ek Din Pratidinâ™ violently shakes traditional morality and compels people to think beyond the confines of their respective comfort zones. Some of his later ventures include such masterpieces as â˜Ek Din Achanakâ™ (Suddenly, One Day) (1989), â˜Mahaprithiviâ™ (World Within, World Without) (1991) and â˜Antareenâ™ (The Confined) (1993).

  • Bengal's Changing Cultural Scenario
Bengal's Changing Cultural Scenario Swapan Mullick Fluctuations on the Bengali cultural scene can be bewildering. Tollygunge seemed irretrievably doomed even in the last years of Uttam Kumar. But one smash hit caused a freak revival and Calcutta's little Tollywood is now roaring with activity. As were the theatre groups-but fifteen years ago. Today, they look back on their glorious past or on stalwarts who have either left the scene or have lost their old charisma. The jatra-the open-air opera-has. on the other hand. turned into a thriving industry and drawn away talent from films and theatre. There was a time when the recording companies flourished. Now Bengali music. both as an art and industry, has fallen on hard times. The total picture is more confusing than is good for the cultural scene which once prided itself on its vitality. The confusion promises to persist as long as some crucial questions remain unanswered. How are good films to be made now that the State Government has withdrawn from direct production of feature films? (Its experiment proved too expensive; it yielded awards but fetched few other satisfying results). Why have theatre groups failed singularly in offering original plays or even pleasing audiences with their new productions? Is the two-way traffic between films and theatre a means of cross-fertilisation or simply a very practical method of individual survival? Why has fresh musical talent failed to appear on the horizon now that the ageing stars of the disc are beginning to look-and sound-a tired lot? The answers are not easy to find partly because public taste seems so difficult to assess.

  • Mrinal Sen (1923 – 2018)
HUMANITIES INSTITUTE Stuart Blackburn, Ph.D. Mrinal Sen (1923 – 2018) (Sen as a young man) Life Mrinal Sen, one of a trio of great Indian film-makers in the middle decades of the 20th century, was born into a Hindu family in a city in what was then the Province of Bengal in British India. He went to Calcutta, the location of his most famous films, as a university student, during which time he became closely associated with (although not a member of) the Communist Party of India (CPI). His early cultural activity was not with cinema but with a leftist theatre group in Calcutta. Like many of his characters, he was forced to take a job that he did not want (a salesman for a pharmaceutical company outside the city). In his leisure time, however, he began to read about aesthetics and film- making. Before long, he landed a position as a sound technician in a Calcutta film studio, and his career was launched. (Sen on the set of Mrigayaa) His first two films, produced when he was in his early 30s, were only moderately successful. His big breakthrough in terms of popular success came with Baishey Shravan (Wedding Day) in 1960, although he still had little financial backing. That changed with Bhuvan Shome (Mr Bhuvan Shome) in 1969, which put him on the international stage of film-makers. After that, Sen made his famous Calcutta Trilogy and other politically-motivated films that shone a light on contemporary social and political issues. In the heady days of the 1960s and 1970s, his hard-hitting political messages won him audiences in the international film festival circuit and among intellectuals across the world.
