For help, see the glossary at the end of the lesson. INTRODUCTION TO THE FABACEAE The genus Phaseolus is part of the Fabaceae, or the Pea or Legume Family. This family is also known as the Leguminosae. TAXONOMISTS have different opinions on naming the family and how to treat the family. Members of the Fabaceae are HERBS, SHRUBS and TREES. Most of the members have alternate compound leaves. The FRUIT is usually a LEGUME, also called a pod. Members of the Fabaceae are often called LEGUMES. Legume crops like chickpeas, dry beans, dry peas, faba beans, lentils and lupine commonly have root nodules inhabited by beneficial bacteria called rhizobia. -

JOURNAL OF PLANT PROTECTION RESEARCH Vol. 50, No. 2 (2010) EFFECT OF VARIOUS HOST-PLANTS ON THE POPULATION GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE PEA APHID Sylwia Goławska* University of Podlasie, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Prusa 12, 08-110 Siedlce, Poland Received: November 11, 2009 Accepted: May 6, 2010 Abstract: The performance of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Homoptera: Aphididae) was studied on several Fabaceae species including: pea (Pisum sativum), broad bean (Vicia faba), alfalfa (Medicago sativa), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and red clover (Tri- folium pratense). Alfalfa, bean and red clover were less accepted by the pea aphid than pea and broad bean. The pea aphid fed on the alfalfa, bean and red clover showed longer pre-reproductive, and shorter reproductive and post-reproductive periods. Alfalfa, bean and red clover also shortened and decreased fecundity of the pea aphid. Mean survival of the pea aphids fed on red clover and bean plants was reduced in comparison to pea aphid fed on pea and broad bean. The other studied population parameters: intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), net reproduction (R0) and mean generation time were also reduced in the case of the pea aphid on alfalfa, red clover and bean. The study of aphid development and reproduction demonstrated that pea and broad bean are suitable host plants for A. pisum while alfalfa, red clover and bean are not. It is likely that the rejection of alfalfa, red clover and bean by A. pisum was caused by chemical factors in these hosts. Rotational crop: Peas and other legumes are desirable in crop rotations because they break up disease and pest cycles, provide nitrogen, improve soil microbe diversity and activity, improve soil aggregation, conserve soil water, and provide economic diversity (Veseth, 1989; Lupwayi et al., 1998; Biederbeck et al., 2005; Chen et al., 2006). Green manure and cover crop: Peas are grown as green manures and cover crops because they grow quickly and contribute nitrogen to the soil (Ingels et al., 1994; Clark, 2007). Pea roots have nodules, formed by the bacteria Rhizobium leguminosarum, which convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3). Box 2003, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia E-mail: [email protected] አህፅርኦት አተር ከጥንት ጀምሮ በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ሇምግብነት የሚመረት የጥራጥሬ ሰብል ነው፡፡ በአገሪቱ ውስጥ ከ1500 በላይ ተሇያይነት ያላቸዉ የአተር ስብስቦች ቢኖርም፣ በተሇያይነት ሁኔታ እና መጠን ላይ በሞሇኪውላር ዯረጃ በተሇይ በSSR ማርከር ጥቂት ጥናቶች ብቻ ተዯርጓል፡፡ በዚህ ጥናት ውስጥ, 142 ተቃራኒ የኢትዮጵያ አተር germplasm ጄኔቲክ ስብጥር SSR ማርከር በመጠቀም ጥናት ተዯርጓል፡፡ Euclidean የርቀት ማትሪክስ በመጠቀም germplasm በሰባት የተሇያዩ እጅቦች ወስጥ ተመድበዋል፡፡ ሃያ በአንዯኛው ምድብ ውስጥ፣ 11 በሁሇተኛው፣ 5 በሦስተኛው፣ 41 በአራተኛው፣ 17 በአምስተኛው፣ 18 በስድስተኛው እና 30 በሰባተኛው ምድብ ውስጥ ታጅበዋል፡፡ የመጀመሪያ፣ ሁሇተኛ እና ሦስተኛ principal components በቅዯም ተከተል 76.85%, 6.89% እና 6.06% በስብስቦቸ መካከል ያሇውን ልዩነት አሳይተዋል፡፡ በሞሇኪዩል ስብጥር እና በስብስብ ዞኖች መካከል ወጥ የሆነ ግንኙነት አልታየም፣ ይህም የሚያሣየው በስባስቦቹ ውስጥ እና መካከል ከፍተኛ ተሇያይነት በgenotypes ውስጥ መኖሩን ነው፡፡ በዚህ ጥናት ውስጥ ጥቅም ላይ የዋሇው SSR ማርከር ከ0.33-0.95 polymorphic ያሇው ሲሆን ይህም በአንፃራዊ ሁኔታ ከፍተኛ የተሇያይነት መረጃ ይዘት (PIC) አሳይተዋል፡፡ ይህም የሞሇኪውላር ማርከር ጄኔቲካዊ ልዩነት ትንተና ሇአተር ጠቃሚ እንዯሚሆን ያመሇክታል፡፡ ጥናቱ ሇመስክ አተር ማዳቀል እና ማምበር እንቅስቃሴዎች ላይ ጥቀም ላይ ሇማዋል የበዛ ጄኔቲክ ብዝሃነት ሀብት እንዳሇ አመላክቷል፡፡ Abstract Field pea is an ancient legume crop grown mainly for food in Ethiopia. Akopian Summary: The seedling structure of representatives of three genera in tribe Fabeae (Fabaceae) was studied with special reference to number and morphology of the fi rst scaly leaves (cataphylls), and juvenile leaves as well as to some other features. The correlation between the number of cataphylls and life endurance is discussed. The trait is proposed to be more dependent on life form and environment than on the taxonomical position of species. Some of them are open growth and slight (compared to animals) extent of integration which enables a high degree of autonomy of morphogenesis in distinct organs and their parts (Lodkina 1983). Shoot development includes repeated formation of elementary modules (internode – node – leaf – axillary bud) but the ontogeny of every component can have some specifi c features on diff erent stages. Earlier developmental stages are of special interest for investigations on morphogenesis, reconstruction of systematic and phylogenetic relations and uncovering possible evolutionary pathways. -
Section Reports Astylus Bourgeoisi, a Melyrid Beetle, a New Continental USA Record
DACS-P-00124 Volume 53, Number 2, March - April 2014 DPI’s Bureau of Entomology, Nematology and Plant Pathology (the botany section is included in this bureau) produces TRI- OLOGY six times a year, covering two months of activity in each issue. The report includes detection activities from nursery plant inspections, routine and emergency program surveys, and requests for identification of plants and pests from the public. Samples are also occasionally sent from other states or countries for identification or diagnosis. Highlights Section Reports Astylus bourgeoisi, a melyrid beetle, a new continental USA record. This is a South Botany Section 2 American genus, not previously known from North America. Although the genus includes the species used for the aromatic spice cinnamon, several species in the genus, including this one, have little or no fragrance in their bark, twigs and leaves. Longidorus africanus Merny, 1966, the needle nematode, is an ectoparasitic species native to Africa that has been associated with date palms, Phoenix dactylifera, in the Middle East. In Florida, L. africanus has been detected at the interdiction stations on date palm shipments originating from California since 1989, but it is unclear whether the nematode has become established in Florida on these transplanted palms.
