JUNGFRAU REGION – PROGRAM INSPIRATION SPRING DAY 1 MEIRINGEN Right at the back of the Bernese Oberland, at the foot of lake Brienz and surrounded by countless mountain peaks there's a village called Meiringen. Together with four other communities Meiringen builds the Haslital. Tourists all around the world visits this popular place with about 5000 inhabitants. Meiringen is the perfect point of departure for many adventures around the Haslital. ~2h AARE GORGE The Haslital, one of the large valleys in the central alps, stretches from the Grimsel Pass to the Lake of Brienz. The flat valley floor of the lower Haslital is separated from the upper valley by a transverse rock formation. Over thousands of years, the Aare River eroded a path through this rock formation resulting in a gorge which is 1’400 metres long and up to 200 metres deep. This gorge has been accessible for over 100 years by a system of safe paths and tunnels. The walk through the gorge is a very special way to experience nature ~3h ALPEN TOWER In summer the Alpen tower is a perfect point of departure for many hikes and for paragliding. And don't miss the display of Muggestutz' winter world at the Alpen tower. 1 MERINGUES TASTING In the Museum of culinary art in Frankfurt the source of the development of the «Meringue» was discovered before the Second World War from these papers (unfortunately destroyed during the war) it becomes clear that the «Meringue» was first made by a patissier called Casparini around 1600 in Meiringen. He named his creation after the place where the idea was born and that was Meiringen.

Top of Switzerland – Opportunities, Threats and Challenges of mountain rail- and cableways systems A couple of hundred years ago, the enjoying of the mountain world was the privilege of some spe- cialists and the affluent people. A lot of mountain regions were inaccessible without technical in- stallations. Thanks to the technical development during the last few decades, the mountains have been accessible for almost everybody – get closer to the peak of the mountain and discover the fantastic world around you on Top of Switzerland! The developing of the alpine tourism lead to the construction of many tourist facilities including different methods of transport in the mountains. The first cable car in Switzerland was built in 1866 on the Falls of the River Rhine close to Schaff- hausen. Today more than 1700 cableways and funicular railways are in operation in Switzerland. Schilthorn – Piz Gloria: Best view of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau! One of the most famous places for tourists in Switzerland is “Schilthorn” in the Bernese Oberland area. In 1967 Schilthorn was made accessible to tourists by a cableway from Stechelberg via Mür- ren and Birg to the summit. And not only this: The first turning restaurant in the world at 3’000 me- ter attitude called "Piz Gloria" was opened offering spectacular views on the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (UNESCO world heritage) which are situated opposite of the Schilthorn. It was made fa- mous in 1969 when used as a filming location for the “On Her Majesty's Secret Service” of the James Bond 007 movie. The cableway to the planned Schilthorn restaurant had run out of money when the Bond film was being planned.

But the engineers failed due to the geology of the mountain and so the opening up of the summit for non- climbers was put on hold. Schilthorn cableway and Schilthorn. JRM With the advancement of technology in the cable car industry, it then became possible in the 1960s to eye the opening up of the Schilthorn. The initiator of the Schilthorn cable car, Ernst Feuz, won the concession for the construction of a cable car from Stechelberg to the Schilthorn in 1961. Two years later, construction began. The stretch Stechelberg -Schilthorn was divided into four sectors. Stechelberg - Gimmelwald, Gimmelwald - Murren, Mürren- Birg and Birg -Schilthorn . In 1965, the first three sectors were opened and visitors could travel comfortably from Stechelberg to Birg. However, the most difficult section was imminent: the route from Birg to the Schilthorn. After the successful completion of the last stage in 1967 Feuz had new plans. He wanted to build the first revolving restaurant in the world on the Schilthorn summit, which would offer guests an unforgettable panorama directly at the table. Financial constraints unfortunately prevented the completion of his dream. But James Bond saved the project of Ernst Feuz.
