General Assembly Distr.: General 22 August 2013
United Nations A/68/361 General Assembly Distr.: General 22 August 2013 Original: English Sixty-eighth session Item 15 of the provisional agenda* Culture of peace Letter dated 22 August 2013 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the General Assembly The High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, has submitted to me the sixth annual report on the Alliance of Civilizations highlighting the main activities carried out by the Alliance from July 2012 to June 2013 in accordance with the third implementation plan (2011-2013) and the addendum thereto, as well as his own emerging ideas for the coming year and beyond. As you know, the Alliance of Civilizations was established in 2005 under the auspices of the United Nations, at the initiative of the Governments of Spain and Turkey. Its activities are focused on helping to counter polarization and extremism by promoting tolerance and cultural diversity within and among societies, with the intent to contribute to preventing identity-based conflicts. As the Alliance has entered its first leadership transition with a change of High Representative, it has entered a time of self-evaluation that will lead to greater focus in its activities. The need for the work of the Alliance is as great as ever. However, the High Representative is of the view that there also is a need to determine whether the current array of projects is appropriate for the evolving challenges we face, since we confront situations where innovative proposals are needed. He notes the ability of the Alliance to engage with official entities while continuing to build its linkages to civil society as an important skill. -

The Engine of the Republic: the Presidential Cars PRESENTATION
The Engine of the Republic: The Presidential Cars PRESENTATION The museum collection The Engine of the Republic – The Presidential Cars came about as a result of a challenge issued by the Museum of Transport and Communications to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The challenge, which was immediately accepted, was to create a permanent exhibit that would make it possible for the public to visit, assembled and preserved, one of the most important collections of cars in the country: those that have been in the service of its presidents since the founding of the Republic, over 100 years ago. This collection also reflects an awareness that the vehicles exhibited here are part of a historical heritage. As such, they are no longer disposed of once decommissioned, but become part of the collection of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The job of recording, locating and recovering the cars that were used by the presidents of the Republic, an ongoing task, has been a priority of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic practically since its inception, as already demonstrated by a group of temporary exhibitions: beginning in 2004, to coincide with the opening of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, and continuing over the course of subsequent years, in Porto, Lisbon, Figueira da Foz and Guimarães. Siting this collection in Porto also contributes to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic’s aim of decentralising its activity, bringing part of its collection to the north of the country, a region with a great tradition of car collecting. -

Although uncertainties are still lurking, aggravated by a serious second wave of infection in the main urban centers, as well as by an increasing weariness of the general public, after months of strict control. Undoubtedly, the coming Winter will be extremely important for combat against the pandemic. Meanwhile, it is a time to rethink and to readjust. In this paper, firstly, we will observe Portugal’s plan to tackle the social and economic problems caused by this global health crisis, underlining its valuable insights. Secondly, we will present, with first-hand information, the main ideas and inspirations encountered by the Chinese community in Portugal, facing the challenges and hope of a post-pandemic world. In the end, we propose to review the Sino-Portuguese relations during the pandemic, up until now, stressing the obstacles and ambiguities, as well as some potential opportunities. -

My name is John Rennie. I am the Editor-in-Chief of Scientific American and it's my pleasure to be the moderator for our proceedings today. We're very glad you could join us for what I hope is going to be an extremely informative and in some respects I hope inspirational discussion of tuberculosis and the state of our efforts to try to prevent it, diagnose it, treat it, control it, ideally eliminate it from the face of the earth. Today as you know, March 24th, is World Tuberculosis Day, which commemorates the occasion back in 1884 when the famous Dr. Robert Koch presented his discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus to his colleagues in Berlin. That day marked a turning point in the humanity's struggle against an enemy whose grip has really only strengthened as our populations have become more concentrated and more urban. -

NATIONAL PALACE OF BELÉM Classified as a national monument in 2007, Belém Palace became the seat of the presidency after 1910. With a history spanning more than five centuries, Belém Palace has served as the official residence of the President of the Republic since the election of the first President, Manuel de Arriaga. In the mid-sixteenth century, D. Manuel of Portugal, a figure of the Portuguese Renaissance, constructed the main building of the palace on land leased to monks from the Order of St. Jerome. In 1726, the property was acquired by King João V to serve as his holiday residence and remained in the royal family's possession until 1908. From then on, guardianship was entrusted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which used Belém Palace to host visiting foreign officials until the foundation of the Republic in 1910.
