Valentine’s Day marked a special occasion for a Taumaru- nui couple celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. Mavis and Rob Dowle had no idea what the significance of marrying on February 14 held until many years down the track. Surrounded by friends and staff at Te Arahina O Arihia Rest Home Mavis said having a strong partnership with her husband was the secret to a long, prosper- ous marriage. ‘‘You share everything and any problems. We always talked them over together. ‘‘I helped Rob with the busi- ness and we raised the kids and got involved with the com- munity.’’ The shy South Islander tied the knot with her sweetheart from Taumarunui at the Presbyterian First Church in 1948. Since Rob worked on the rail- way he was given a free pass by the company as part of the annual holiday package. He decided to cash it in for their honeymoon to Wellington.
