The Timber Trail Pureora - Ongarue A new cycling adventure The Timber Trail between Pureora and Ongarue, when fully opened, will provide 85 km of cycling pleasure through bush covered hills and across deep gorges. A 2-3 day cycling adventure on relatively easy gradients and surfaces, the Timber Trail is one of several cycle trails being developed as part of Nga Haerenga - the New Zealand Cycle Trails. e g d i Utilising historic bush tramways, old bulldozer and hauler r B roads and newly constructed track, this Grade 2 trail features u k u t 35 bridges, including 8 large suspension bridges (the longest u k u being 141 metres). It showcases the historic Ongarue Spiral t a g and passes through magnificent podocarp forests of rimu, totara, n a M miro, matai and kahikatea, as well as some exotic forestry and e th more open vegetation with extensive views of the surrounding ng ssi landscape. Most of the trail is now open with a small section to be Cro opened early in 2013. Note: The trail is grade 2 ‘easy’ for riding north to south but is grade 3-4 when ridden south to north. It is a multi-use track for cycling and walking so share with care. Getting there The Timber Trail is an easy 1-2 hr drive from Rotorua, Taupo and Hamilton. It begins at Pureora Forest off SH30 between Te Kuiti and Mangakino. The central part of the trail can be accessed from Piropiro campsite at the end of Kokomiko Road, Waimiha, and from Ongarue via SH 4 at the southern end. -

It contains a 400 m thick marine sedimentary succession of Miocene age and Quaternary ignimbrites. The field area comprises 900 km2 of steep to rolling farmland and some large patches of native forest, and includes the towns of Ohura in the west and Taumarunui in the east. There is limited outcrop exposure in the study area, and the sedimentary succession is often weathered. -

Tai Poutini Polytechnic Media Release 03 June 2015 Steam school recognises painstaking restoration The painstaking, 11‐year restoration of a 1923 Peckett 1630 steam locomotive has won this year’s Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) Shantytown Steam Locomotive Restoration Award. The Huntly‐based Bush Tramway Club picked up this year’s award at this weekend’s Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand (FRONZ) Annual Awards Dinner in Blenheim. TPP Steam School tutor Ian Tibbles says the award recognises the enormous effort of the small group which dedicated the past 11 years to fundraising and overhauling the historic locomotive. “Bush Tramway Club is a small organisation with minimal recourses. The mechanical team consisted of three or four members who also shared responsibilities for other aspects of the club’s operation. This year’s award recognises the resourcefulness of this small dedicated team who, with limited facilities, resources and skill base, not only raised the funds and organised the work but also overhauled the machine. “The award also recognises this significant industrial engine which is very much a part of Waikato's industrial heritage and which, through its restoration, connects the coal industry of Pukemiro's past with today's generation,” Mr Tibbles says. The Shantytown Steam School is a West Coast‐based joint venture training program between the West Coast Historical and Mechanical Society (Shantytown) and TPP. It enables students of all ages to gain qualifications to operate steam powered locomotives. Operating since October 2009, the Shantytown Steam School has graduated more than 50 prospective engine drivers. The Steam Locomotive Restoration Award is offered in association with FRONZ, with the aim of encouraging excellence in the restoration of steam powered rail vehicles by individual or group members of FRONZ within the railway or tramway, tourism or heritage sectors of New Zealand. -

Nga Pakanga O Aotearoa
Beginnings - The New Zealand Wars were fought between 1845 and Nga Pakanga 1872. They were about who controlled the country and who owned the land. When Europeans arrived, Māori had already been in Aotearoa for more than five hundred years. New Zealand may have looked wild and uninhabited to the o Aotearoa first Europeans, but this was misleading. Every part of THE NEW ZEALAND WARS the country was divided among iwi, hapū, and whānau. In each place, someone had the right to grow kūmara, by Ross Calman gather fern-root, take birds or timber, or catch fish. Organised groups of settlers started arriving in New Zealand shortly after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. Most of these people came from the British Isles in search of a better life. At first, they lived in a handful of small coastal towns: Auckland, Wellington, Whanganui, Nelson, and New Plymouth. Māori outnumbered Pākehā, and British power and influence over the country was limited. Then, less than five years after the treaty was signed, a Māori leader decided to put British power to the test. Support collaboration, coordination and communication 21 Trialling New Approaches to Social Sector Change 01 The Social Sector Trials Social Sector Trials (SSTs/Trials) are operating in 16 communities around New Zealand. The Waitomo District was one of the first six SST communities and the Trial has been in place since March 2011. The term of these first six Trials has been extended and will continue operating until at least 30 June 2015. This document is the third SST Action Plan for Waitomo. Please refer to earlier action plans for SST background information, local data and progress information. This is available at www.msd.govt.nz/social-sector-trials The change for 2014–2015 The SSTs focus on improving outcomes that reflect the needs of the community. Regional Transport Committee Approved Organisation Update June 2019 ORGANISATION NAME: Horowhenua District Council RTC REPRESENTATIVE: Mayor Michael Feyen 1. MAINTENANCE, OPERATIONS AND RENEWALS Pavement repairs and drainage work for next season’s reseals have begun around the district. This year’s reseals, which were undertaken by JJ Walters as subcontractors to Higgins, had all but one site completed by mid-December with the final site completed in April following completion of a minor safety improvement project. The road past the Gladstone Road slip has continued to be open full time. Geotechnical investigations have been carried out along the corridor of a possible realignment. The development of a business case has begun and a variation to the RLTP will be forthcoming. Work on this financial year’s rehabilitations progressed well except on Waitarere Beach Road where the discovery of a midden has held work up. The project has now been delayed until the new financial year. 2. WALKING AND CYCLING Council officers have met with the NZ Transport Agency and KiwiRail regarding a proposed shared pathway in the rail reserve in Levin from Tararua Road to Roslyn Road. This pathway would become the north/south spine for the shared pathway network through the town. KiwiRail have issues with trespassers illegally crossing the railway line all along the rail corridor in Levin and a fence could be installed at the same time to alleviate this concern. 3. ROAD SAFETY RURAL SPEED LIMIT REVIEW HDC have been undergoing a Rural Speed Limit Review with the aim to implement any new rural speed limits by the end of the financial year. -

NEW ZEALAND OLIGOCENE LAND CRISIS: INTEGRATED MICROPALEONTOLOGY OF WAIKATO COAL MEASURES AND ASSOCIATED SEDIMENTS IN CENTRAL NORTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Earth Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand. Claire Louise Shepherd 2012 ABSTRACT The topic of complete inundation of the New Zealand landmass during the Oligocene is a contentious one, with some proponents arguing the possibility that Zealandia became completely submerged during this time, and others contesting the persistence of small islands. The outcome of this debate has significant implications for the way in which modern New Zealand flora and fauna have evolved. This research project addresses the topic from a geological point of view by analysing late Oligocene–early Miocene sediments in the Benneydale region, in order to establish the timing of marine transgression in this area. Samples from two cores drilled in the Mangapehi Coalfield were analysed for palynological and calcareous nannofossil content, and these data were used to determine the age and paleoenvironment of Waikato Coal Measures, Aotea Formation and Mahoenui Group. Additionally, data from 28 boreholes in the coalfield were utilized to construct a series of isopach maps to elucidate changes in the paleostructure through time. All data were combined to develop a series of paleogeographic maps illustrating the development of coal measures and associated sediments across the Benneydale region.
