The speaker asked why don’t we praise or af- fi rm others? He then mentioned fi ve reasons for this. The fi rst was familiarity, being so familiar with the other person and their attributes that we don’t even think to give them affi rmation. Secondly was the false assumption that we may think they do not need affi rming or praising. An- other was that we’ve praised them already so we don’t think it needs doing again. Then there’s fear because they may think we’re after something or they may laugh at us. Finally we may be embarrassed to praise or af- fi rm someone, or it may seem false or unfamiliar on our lips (until we’ve tried it a few times). The speaker then went on to talk about how we can give praise and affi rmation. Perhaps the most common way is with a spoken compliment. ‘PLEASE BE SEATED’: Rosetown Lions’ former president, Ces Heron (left) and committee member, Marie Martin alongside We may want to say how they made us feel, or a seat in Victoria Park recently donated by Rosetown Lions. As I thought about this advice I couldn’t help comparing it with affi rming and giving praise to BBEE IINN WWITHITH TTHEHE CCHANCEHANCE TTOO WINWIN God. Why don’t we praise God more? Is it famili- arity, where we’ve become so used to the good- ness of God that we no longer notice it? Maybe we make the false assumption that God does not need our praise and affi rmation or that someone else will do it. Maybe it’s fear! How dare I presume to say something complimentary to God! And besides, God may think I want something! Maybe it’s $1 MILLION embarrassment! What will others think of me? What will God think of me? And how can we praise and affi rm God any- way? The psalms in the Bible give us plenty of words if we cannot think of our own. OONLYNLY But I suspect God delights in hearing words from our own hearts and minds to express how God has made us feel: (Wow, God that was a magnifi cent sunset), or how well God has done something (That is a spectacular sunset, Creator DDAYSAYS God). And we can always give God the gift of our love. Why would we want to praise and affi rm God? God enjoys hearing our praise and affi rmations. Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, December 7, 2006 PAGE 13 Veen claims classic By Colin Thorsen Ngahinapouri teenage golfer Matthew Veen is fi nishing the year with a hiss and a roar. The 18-year-old retained his title winning the second annual 27-hole Ngahinapouri Junior Classic under-23 tournament with 107 gross. The runner-up Peter Sin was one shot off the pace. Bouyed by his success, Veen went close to win- ning the Whangamata Classic at the weekend - fi nishing just two shots shy of the gross. He was a model of consistency with rounds of 70, 71, 72 for a 54-hole total of 213 on the par 70 course - outstanding scoring in the testing, windy conditions. He claimed the third net prize. Veen’s mentor, Kam Sanders says he has tons of potenial, enjoys his golf and plays his games accordingly. “He has a good attitude and a pleasant person- ality, all the attributes to become a top player.” The three handicapper has been a club member at Ngahinapouri since 2003. He has a personal best 67 off-the-stick on his home course. 290RR002/06 Veen made his debut for Ngahinapouri’s senior championship pennant team this year after being reserve in 2005. He was a member of the top 2005 Hamilton Boys’ High School team, winners of the Waikato area fi nal.
