2014 ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends of MOT,

Michigan Theatre is among our nation’s leading opera companies and I am delighted to be back in to work with founder and artistic director David DiChiera and a dedicated Board of Directors under the Chairmanship of R. Jamison Williams. My wife Brenda and I are appreciative to all who have extended many kindnesses to us since our arrival early in the year. One of the points of distinction of MOT in comparison with other opera companies in the nation is that our organization consists of three distinct operations: 1) Opera Theatre: the production and presentation of and musical theatre, along with the presentation of dance and education/community programs; 2) : the performance venue for MOT presentations and the Broadway Series of the Nederlander organization; a learning center for dance, choral, and other educational activities; and a highly sought- after venue for concerts, conferences, graduations, and other events; and 3) Opera House Parking & Retail Center. Concurrent with an exciting and vibrant range of artistic offerings this past season, members of the Board and Staff have been involved with a planning process designed to address the next phase for MOT. Since the beginning of the year, the Boston based firm TDC, one of the leading consultant agencies in the nation, has been working diligently with to our organization with a strategic planning initiative. As part of this initiative, there have been a series of audience surveys and focus groups, and several strategic ideas have been tested. The emerging results are highly informative, and among the preliminary findings we have learned: 1) MOT continues to be highly regarded by its core audience; 2) subscribers and multiple event purchasers believe that the quality of performances are on par with the nation’s leading opera houses; and 3) audience members believe that going to the opera offers a sense of occasion. One of the most surprising outcomes of our preliminary work was to learn that over the past two years, the audience reach for MOT performances has extended throughout the Great Lakes and beyond. In today’s mobile society, we have discovered that MOT performances attracted audiences from ten states and our reach into Canada is growing steadily. In accordance with these findings, there is much work to be done to engage our regional audience, affirm our commitment to high quality performance experiences, strengthen our educational offerings, create strategic alliances with area arts organizations and educational institutions, and become a key player in civic projects. All of these steps will need to conform with available resources to address an emerging vision. The current phase of the planning process is expected to be concluded by the end of the calendar year. MOT is appreciative to the Kresge Foundation for their support of this important work and we look forward to sharing the results with our stakeholders by the spring of 2015. Thank you for your investment in our work to make high quality opera, musical theater, dance, and education/community programs available in Southeastern Michigan.

Because of all of you, 2014 was a terrific season!

Warm regards,

Wayne S. Brown President and Chief Executive Officer

The Great Transition

he most significant event of MOT’s 2013-14 fiscal Tyear was the “Great Transition”: the change in leadership triggered by David DiChiera’s decision in February of 2013 to retire as Founding General Director after 42 years of extraordinary service. Many cultural organizations led by iconic figures have foundered or collapsed under such conditions. Annual Report 2014 5 2013-14 Season Overview David DiChiera

he 2013 fall season of opera celebrated the 200th anniversary Tof Wagner and Verdi — the two composers that dominated opera in the 19th century. I chose to represent each of these operatic titans with one of their most popular works. We launched the season with Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, an earlier work which already demonstrated the exciting and significant role of the orchestra and his pervasive use of leitmotifs to represent ideas and individuals. The overture itself is already a major tone poem for which our director Bernard Uzan A View From the Bridge Joffrey Ballet created an absorbing film. For Verdi I chose La Traviata, one of his most popular operas from his Middle Period. Two beautiful and very talented sopranos alternated in the title role. Nicole Cabell, who soon after her debut as Musetta with MOT went on to win the Singer of the World Competition and came back to give us a moving portrayal of Violetta. She is enjoying an international career and is scheduled to return in a future season. Corinne Winters, our alternate Violetta, was also well received in her company debut and is now in great La Traviata demand. Our spring opera season opened with William Bolcom’s A View From the of Italian opera’s most challenging roles. In addition to our opera and dance seasons, we present two events each year that we all look forward to. During the holiday season Suzanne Mallare Acton conducts the ever popular Too Hot to Handel, the jazz- gospel-classic version of Handel’s Messiah and in the spring the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus presents a children’s opera. The Broadway in Detroit season included Elf, Porgy & Bess, American Idiot, and The Wizard of Oz. Several special one-night performances by stars such as Eddie Izzard, Brit Floyd, and Frankie Beverly were all on the season’s schedule. The Detroit Opera House calendar was full of special events, weddings and graduations (see page 18). This year the Detroit Opera House Sky Deck played host to over 9,000 visitors including baseball fans, and corporate events who took in the city in a Maestro William Bolcom whole new way.

16 Michigan Opera Theatre Dance Education 2013-14 SEASON

ance Theatre of Harlem partnered with the Detroit Opera House again this past summer hosting the 3-week Dance DTheatre of Harlem Detroit Summer Intensive. Inspired by the ongoing programs offered at the DTH School in New York, the Detroit Summer Intensive gave over 50 students, mostly from the Metro-Detroit area, the opportunity to learn from both past DTH company members and highly experienced professionals from Michigan. The program ended with a fabulous performance on the DOH stage showcasing all of the students and their hard work. In addition to DTH, Michigan’s own, Eisenhower Dance hosted a summer intensive. This one-week intensive pushed metro-Detroit dancers to their limit with challenging choreography in Ballet, Jazz-Funk, Modern, and Eisenhower Dance Repertory. Classes were taught by Eisenhower dancers Morgan (Mo) Williams, Katharine Larson, and Molly McMullen. After an intense week the students showed friends and family what they had learned at an informal showing in the DOH Daimler Chrysler Black Box Theatre. DOH Dance Education is extremely thankful for the partnerships that have formed and hope to continue to enhance Metro-Detroit dancers through them. During the season, Michigan Opera Theatre and Dance Theatre of Harlem worked together to expose local students to dance through educational outreach. Students at Detroit International Academy, Ellington Elementary, and Cass Technological High School all benefited from the Dance Theatre of Harlem Dancing Through Barriers — Diaspora Curriculum. This program aimed to not only get the students moving, but also inspire them to create social change that benefits others by examining our socio-cultural past, present, and future through dance and allied arts. Students from these schools were also bused to the Detroit Opera House to participate in special master classes taught by Dance Theatre of Harlem dancers and the lecture demonstration presented by the company. The success of these programs was proven by the students’ smiles and embraces of the teachers after the short one-week program. Eisenhower Dance also hosted a one-week educational program at Spain Elementary Middle School with their Healthy Kids program. The program’s message is to strive to balance the three keys to healthy living: nutrition, activity and emotional health. Also promote making healthy living choices now leads to a brighter future, including less dependence on medications and a lower prevalence for certain diseases. Ballet Renaissance and Inner City Dance Scope continue to call the Detroit Opera House their home for dance training. They both hold regular dance classes for students of all ages during the evenings and weekends. The Margo V. Cohen Center for Dance was also the host to auditions for many arts programs across the country including The Ailey School, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and of course our own Nutcracker auditions held every year. Over 100 children audition for the chance to perform on the Opera House stage with a premier ballet company.

Annual Report 2014 25 TAKING IT TO THE STREETS: SHARING THE JOYS OF OPERA WITH OUR COMMUNITIES

ith special thanks to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Knight Foundation, Fiscal Year 2014 enabled Michigan Opera Theatre to pursue its goal of engaging Metropolitan Detroit communities with renewed vigor and inspiration. The company has ever beenW convinced of the need to not let the glorious music of our art form sound out and then die away within the confines of our opera house. We know that opera has great intrinsic value to people of all ages and backgrounds—it is artistically exciting, historically and morally edifying, emotionally satisfying, a balm and a boon to the soul of man. Convinced of this, we sought to bring opera outside of the opera house, to help make it part of the daily conversation in our multifaceted metropolis. Michigan Opera Theatre has always been lauded for its work in building bridges to the community it serves. The company’s mandate to build bridges Lunch for Ela Stein Weissberger at Roeper Upper was further fulfilled in 2014 with a series of outreach events developed to serve School March 18, 2014. specific geographic and ethnic communities. Examples include an evening featuring a spaghetti dinner and a performance of La Traviata for the members of a local Italian language club, raffling off tickets toThe Flying Dutchman at a celebration honoring German Unity Day, and reaching out to Swedish-American and Korean-American audiences, respectively, to celebrate this art form and their heritage, with Elisabet Strid in Dutchman and Rudy Park in Turandot. Below are additional examples of the work that is bringing so many new and unexpected audiences into the MOT fold.

OPERA CLUBS In late 2013, Michigan Opera Theatre undertook an ambitious grass-roots marketing initiative with the development of Opera Clubs. The purpose of these clubs is to build and encourage greater audience attendance for all Michigan Opera Theatre productions by establishing affinity groups or “clubs” in local neighborhoods. Club meetings, held in private homes, include refreshments, an overview Crowd members asking questions of Michael Yashinsky of Michigan Opera Theatre’s upcoming production, and a performance by a following his talk on the MOT spring season – Michigan Opera Theatre artist. At the time of publication, clubs have been established in Sherwood Forest, Livonia, Rosedale Park, Grandmont, Arden Park, Boston Edison, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Palmer Woods, and Grosse Pointe.

SPEAKING OF OPERA… As a point of pride, Michigan Opera Theatre expanded its speaker engagement outreach by partnering with myriad libraries, affinity groups, and movie theaters. At the Farmington Community Library in November 2013, the lively strains of the “Brindisi” from Traviata were heard as that production’s assistant director, Michael Yashinsky, led attendees in a rousing sing-along to cap off the behind- the-scenes lecture, matador costumes from the opera arrayed in shimmering red and gold behind him. Annual Report 2014 33 Ensuring the Future

a gift that outlives you—that touches future generations in your absence—to experience and enjoy Imagine the world of opera. That’s the goal of the Avanti Society, Michigan Opera Theatre’s Planned Gift Recognition Program. The Avanti Society represents a designated group of friends of Michigan Opera Theatre who have made plans to include the organization in their estate plans—whether by will, trust, insurance, or life income arrangement. Membership in the Avanti Society is open to all. Members of the Avanti Society receive a beautifully designed lapel pin, recognition at the annual Avanti Evening and invitations to special events and performances, and are listed as members in our program books throughout each season.

AN AVANTI FOR TOMORROW The growth of Michigan Opera Theatre’s permanent Endowment Fund ensures the growth and future vitality of one of the region’s greatest cultural assets. You are invited to create your own legacy—your Avanti—through Michigan Opera Theatre. You may use the attached confidential reply card to indicate your gift, or contact Alan Harrison at (313) 237-3416 to discuss gift options that may benefit you, your heirs and Michigan Opera Theatre.
