Studied: Access to Health

Progression: Mental Health Nursing Degree at University of Wolverhampton

Natalie Guy never imagined that a short distance learning course would give her the confidence to continue studying all the way up to university level. Now as an undergraduate, she is keen to pursue a role as a mental health advocate, ideally in suicide prevention. “Helping those experiencing problems with their mental health has always been an ambition,” said Natalie. “Having support available to those in need can make all the difference.” Natalie’s Access to Health course opened her eyes up to a range of health subjects and disciplines linked to science (body anatomy) and sociology (health studies). The most rewarding part of all was completing a 3,000 word research proposal about diabetes awareness, for which she achieved a Distinction grade. “Being a student again is one of the best decisions I’ve made,” said Natalie. “I’m the first in my family to go to university and now my sister is at college. I paved the way for her. “I’ve made friends for life and found it rewarding to see others progress in the same way I am.” Following her degree, she hopes to gain a Masters qualification before becoming a qualified suicide prevention professional. “I’m keen to pursue a role in epidemiology, virology or microbiology research,” said Julie.

Julie Edge

After 15 years of working in marketing, Julie Edge decided to try something completely different. Working towards a career as a virology specialist is definitely that. Her learning journey began with a GCSE Biology and Chemistry qualifications, followed by her Access course and GCSE Physics. Julie is full of praise her for Access course. “Everything was well organised. It was easy to understand what was expected of me,” she recalled. “The idea of doing practicals did make me nervous at first. I wasn’t sure about completing all the instructions on time or not being able to present findings to the rest of the group afterwards.” “There was no need to worry. Support was always available. And my classmates were a mixture of ages and all friendly, so everything went fine.” Julie achieved Distinction grades in all of her units bar one; surpassing the entry requirements for her degree course. With her interest in scientific research stronger than ever, she is hoping to secure a role with Public Health England or the World Health Organisation. “I’m keen to pursue a role in epidemiology, virology or microbiology research,” said Julie.

Latest information can be found at www.walsallcollege.ac.uk 27 Daniel Ali

Studied: HNC, HND and Top-up Degree in Computing

Progression: ICT Systems Developer for the NHS Blood and Transplant Unit (NHSBT)

Daniel applied for a Level 1 course in Computing. He liked it so much, he stayed on to complete level 2 to level 5, followed by his Degree. “I liked the small comfortable environment the College provides. Plus the course was cheaper, which was a huge factor in me choosing to undertake my HNC, HND and Degree here. The one- to-one support I received from tutors was extremely helpful. They would tell me where I was going wrong, which allowed for a lot of self reflection. My personal development was probably the most valuable thing I got out of the course. I understand myself more.” After graduating with top marks, Daniel applied to several graduate agencies. He eventually found a job at the NHS Blood and Transplant Unit as a Graduate ICT Systems Developer. There, he is making use of his skills working on numerous projects that will make a huge difference in people’s lives. “My team and I are developing new systems to replace old ones. My biggest project is a new system that will manage blood donations and file customer complaints. In a few months, I will be testing another system with the prospect of making effective modifications. After three months of training, I realised that I’m working on something that makes a difference. It saves people’s lives. Without our systems, it wouldn’t be possible for blood transfusions or organ transplants to take place.”

Muskan Shrivastava

Studied: HNC Software Development

Progression: HND Software Development

Muskan’s ambition to work as a software developer began while she was growing up in India where members of her family were already working in computing. “I’ve always been interested in how apps are put together, especially the process of trying to build something and seeing what works best. There’s potential in everything you work on. This is an area I want to keep building my knowledge in.” As a HND student she continues to gain skills at a higher level including learning more about Java Script.

“The environment and facilities are really good. I plan to complete my full degree at the college, then look for work.”

“There are already a lot of software development language- based roles out there so there’s lots of choice. I feel like I’m getting all the experience I need for my career here.”

Karl Bickerton IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Studied: HNC Construction and the Built Environment

Progression: Project Surveyor, Unitas Stoke-on-Trent

After spending 17 years working for the NHS that Karl decided he wanted to pursue a career in construction project management. He realised that studying a higher education qualification would provide extra knowledge he could use to explore other career opportunities. “I wanted to understand more about the overall process of construction management,” he explained. “I felt that with new skills in looking after budgets and report writing, I’d have more of a professional platform to take forward.” Having been out of education for some time, Karl did face some challenges during his course such as navigating his way through Microsoft programmes like excel and powerpoint. But with perseverance and support from his lecturers, plus encouragement from his family, Karl continued to give everything to his studies. Karl continued: “What stood out for me were the real-life group projects we were involved in. We all contributed by having specific job roles. I was the architect, which initially was daunting but I overcame this in the end. “The knowledge of the tutors also set me up for the future. They were amazing. The way things were delivered was easy to understand, which made me more confident about taking on any future work I needed to do.”

Tre Higgins IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Studied: Level 2, 3 and HNC Protective Services

Progression: HND Protective Services

Although he has spent time with the air cadets and is an army reservist, Tre has his sights set firmly on a career in the police force. “The more I’m learning about the police force through college, the more I want to join it,” said Tre. “These courses bring to life everything about being in a protective services role. Looking into the operational and managerial side of the police force through trips, talks and classroom activities is inspiring.” Tre decided to carry on studying at a higher education level so that he could continue improving his understanding of police work, the working environment and community relations. He is as keen as ever to experience as much as he possible about what life is like on the front line. Being involved in Streetwatch; a voluntary public patrol with the local police allows him to do this. “My classmates and I have been on patrol with a PCSO. And on another occasion, three students and I have gone out without an officer,” said Tre. “People respond positively to us.” After completing a full honours degree, Tre will apply to join the police force.

CHARLIE HEATON

Charlie studied a Level 4 Business and Administration Diploma. She is now an Assistant Service Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Keen to pursue a career she was passionate about, Charlie applied for a Level 2 Business and Administration apprenticeship for the Dudley Group of Hospitals, with training provided by Walsall College. “I worked full-time in the HR department within the medical workforce, which is the doctor’s HR. After completing that apprenticeship, I moved onto a RTT Tracking Clerk role within the surgical management team - part of my Level 3 course with the college.” Charlie then progressed onto a Level 4 Business and Administration Diploma and became a Deputy Manager, before gaining a position as a Directorate Support Manager for Surgery, Urology and Vascular at Dudley Group of Hospitals. “I was in the Directorate Support Manager role for a while, before I decided that I needed a new challenge. So I began a new post this year as an Assistant Service Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which is making great use of the skills I have gained through my previous apprenticeships.” Charlie is now undertaking a Level 5 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship alongside her role. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the College. My assessor pushed me to do my best throughout my journey and I highly recommend these courses to anyone who wants to move into management via the apprenticeship route.”
