Col. Neal E. Worley, a retired Air Force World War II veteran, during his time at the podium. “What price freedom? What price glory? It’s time to give thanks.” Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, partic- ularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. The ceremony honored the lives of those that served their country in the armed forces and made the ultimate sacrifice. Louise Phillips, daughter of the recently- departed Edith Horning, said she was speaking on behalf of her late mother when she said that the ideals she fought for would not be soon for- gotten by future generations. “I’m a military brat from way back,” she said. “My mom died a week ago. I have a mes- sage from mom to one and all: to train children to be proud defenders of our American free- doms. We want our children to be strong in the ways of freedom.” In addition to the speakers, musical arrange- ments were also prepared including a rendition of “Taps” on a single bugle, the singing of the national anthem by Amanda Baguley and a rendition of a pair of patriotic songs, “America” and “God Bless America,” by Rob Burgess/The Daily Journal Carole Hester. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May (in 2008 on May 26). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American To see more photographs of the Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action.
