THE SUMTER ITEM SUNDAY, MAY 12, 2019 | A5 PANORAMA Real spies in spotlight at new museum Waterboarding, 10,000 artifacts, videos of intelligence officers included

BY DEB RIECHMANN Associated Press

WASHINGTON — James Bond’s shiny silver sports car — with its JB007 rotating license plate — is the first thing visitors see when they step into the new and improved International Spy Muse- um that opens today in Washington. After that, it’s as if the history of Holly- wood’s famous private eye vanishes in invisible ink, while the stories of real- life spies and modern-day espionage take center stage. The old, cramped museum focused on human collection of intelligence. The new one also offers a window into co- vert operations, counterterrorism, intel- ligence analysis, cyber espionage, intel- ligence failures and even highly debated legal and ethical issues, such as water- boarding. “We’re not playing it safe as a muse- um,” Vince Houghton, the museum’s curator and historian, said during a sneak-peek tour of the $162 million, nonprofit museum. “We don’t get money from the government. PHOTOS PROVIDED BY SUMTER COUNTY MUSEUM A view of Church Street looking north from the intersection with W. Hampton Avenue shows the well-maintained streets constructed using techniques used by Scottish engineer John L. McAdam. Before brick pavers, some residents preferred the quiet of passing carriages and horses on dirt until the streets were paved with brick pavers between 1915-1920. Brick streets were once common in Sumter eflections looks back about a hundred years to a time when Sumter had few brick- R paved streets. Most were lined with large oaks, however, which provided shade and beauty for the Sumter community. Most Sumterites were proud of their brick streets and were eager to see their city completely paved and sidewalks made available, allowing citizens to walk in comfort. The author of Reflections made extensive use of an article published in 1915 by then City Clerk, C. M. Hurst, concerning how the paving of city streets Sammy Way helped spell progress for the city and expe- REFLECTIONS dite change in a big way. Several photos and additional resources were ob- tained from The Sumter Item archives. Mr. Hurst noted: “Twenty -one years ago (1895) the streets of Sum- ter were mostly sand beds. There was not a foot of improved roadway in the entire town. Liberty, Bartlette and Church Streets along with Hampton Avenue. Much of the improvement in the sidewalks was realized with the sale of $225,000 of street improvement bonds. Even with comparatively little of what could be called permanent paving, Sumter is, nevertheless, a well-kept town, and pedestrians may travel with a fair degree of comfort on better-than- average walks. This improved condi- tion also pertains to the streets. Sand and clay, careful grading and constant attention to the problems at hand, have accomplished a great deal. Sumter, for years, had its man behind the scenes in the struggle against sand beds and ash heaps. That man was Len E. White, su- perintendent of streets. What little per- manent paving Sumter had at that time was in the business section of the city and covered seven or eight blocks of Main and Liberty Streets with the best vitrified brick. Some of the original brick paving still exists on South Main and several more of Sumter’s down- town streets.
