The International Journal Of Humanities & Social Studies (ISSN 2321 - 9203) www.theijhss.com THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL STUDIES The Early Bronze Age in Southwest Anatolia: A Preliminary Report of the Studies on Materials from Local Museums H. Levent Keskin Assistant Professor, Department of Protohistory and Near Eastern Archaeology, Ankara University, Sıhhiye, Ankara, Turkey Mehmet Yıldız Archaeologist, Bodrum Underwater Archaeological Museum, Bodrum Kalesi, Bodrum-Mu ğla, Turkey Abstract: In terms of prehistoric cultures, Southwest Anatolia represents almost a terra incognita. The limited number of research carried out in the region is far from reflecting the full archaeological potential of the early periods. However, ever- increasing number of recent excavations and surveys conducted both in coastal areas and inland zones proved the existence of strong prehistoric cultures in Western Anatolia and their intense relations with neighbouring areas from the Neolithic period onwards. In order to fill the above-mentioned gap, a project was initiated to study and evaluate the whole inventory of the Early Bronze Age material kept in the museums of Mu ğla province and its districts in order to reveal the unique character and cultural development of Southwest Anatolia within the context of Anatolian and Aegean cultures during the Early Bronze Age. Preliminary studies on this material already proved its potential on reflecting the general inventory of the region for this particular period, but also on the content and extent of cultural interactions with different cultural zones. Thus, this paper aims to summarize the available data with an up-to-date research history of the region and form a basis for future studies and problems.

chapter 6 Building Urban Community on the Margins: Stratonikeia and the Sanctuary of Zeus at Panamara While Lagina was a local shrine that grew and expanded with Stratonikeia to become its religious center, the sanctuary of Zeus Karios at Panamara was already recognized as an important regional cult center in southern Karia.1 However, it, too, was gradually drawn into the orbit of Stratonikeia to become the next major urban sanctuary of the polis. This case study explores yet another kind of dynamic in the transition to polis sanctuary, one that entailed a major lateral shift in scope for Panamara, from the wider region of southern Karia with diverse communities towards the urban center in the north and its demographic base (Figure 6.1, and Figure 5.1 above). Through an examination of this transition it will become apparent how Stratonikeia came to replace, or absorb, the administering body of the sanctuary, but also how Panamara was used to achieve the same kinds of goals of the emerging polis as was Lagina: territorial integrity, social cohesion, and global recognition, albeit in a different way. Panamara and its environment have unfortunately not been subject to the same systematic archaeological investigations as Lagina, and much of the orig- inal landscape in the area has already been lost in the exploitation of lignite, or brown coal, through strip-mining. Our sources for this sanctuary and its envi- ronment are therefore severely limited, especially with regard to architecture and processional routes. Fortunately, however, the communities involved with the sanctuary at Panamara left hundreds of inscriptions behind that provide valuable insights into the way in which the sanctuary and cult of Zeus Karios were gradually realigned to meet the needs of Stratonikeia.

  • The New Jerusalem of the Montanists,” Byzantion 6 (1931): 421-425
W.M. Calder, “The New Jerusalem of the Montanists,” Byzantion 6 (1931): 421-425. The New Jerusalem of the Montanists W.M. Calder [p.421] « Pepouza is little more than a name to us; but the order of Hierocles is so well marked that M. Radet [En Phrygie, p. 111] and I have independently and about the same time reached approximately the same conclusion as to the district in which Pepouza lay. » (RAMSAY, Cities and Bishoprics of Phrygia, p. 573). It is a pleasure to be able to report in the present issue of Byzantion that the Expedition sent to Phrygia in 1930 by the American Society for Archaeological Research in Asia Minor found epigraphical evidence which confirms the accuracy of this location. The actual site of Pepouza still remains uncertain, but the uncertainty has been confined within narrow limits. The references in literature to Pepouza, the chief centre and « New Jerusalem » of the Phrygian Montanists, were collected by Ramsay loc. cit. To enable the reader to appreciate the bearing of the new evidence, it is necessary to supplement Ramsay’s account with a summary of subsequent investigation into the local history and the epigraphy of Phrygian Montanism. In Bulletin of the John Rylands Library, VII, 1923, p. 309 ff., the germ of the Montanist movement in Phrygia was traced to the Church in Philadelphia, as described in the Letter to that Church in the Apocalypse. The earliest direct reference to Montanism ― or rather proto- Montanism ― occurs in the Martyrdom of Polycarp, where the epithet « Phrygian » applied to the would-be martyr Quintus shows that there were « Montanists » before Montanus.

  • Investigation of Feller-Buncher Performance Using Weibull Distribution
Article Investigation of Feller-Buncher Performance Using Weibull Distribution Ebru Bilici Forestry Department, Dereli Vocational School, Giresun University, Giresun 28950, Turkey; [email protected] Abstract: With the advancement of technology in forestry, the utilization of advanced machines in forest operations has been increasing in the last decades. Due to their high operating costs, it is crucial to select the right machinery, which is mostly done by using productivity analysis. In this study, a productivity estimation model was developed in order to determine the timber volume cut per unit time for a feller-buncher. The Weibull distribution method was used to develop the productivity model. In the study, the model of the theoretical (estimated) volume distributions obtained with the Weibull probability density function was generated. It was found that the c value was 1.96 and the b value was 0.58 (i.e., b is the scale parameter, and c is the shape parameter). The model indicated that the frequency of the volume data had moved away from 0 as the shape parameter of the Weibull distribution increased. Thus, it was revealed that the shape parameter gives preliminary information about the distribution of the volume frequency. The consistency of the measured timber volume with the estimated timber volume strongly indicated that this approach can be effectively used by decision makers as a key tool to predict the productivity of a feller-buncher used in harvesting operations. Keywords: forest operations; productivity; Weibull distribution; feller-buncher Citation: Bilici, E. Investigation of Feller-Buncher Performance Using 1. Introduction Weibull Distribution.
