The 60’s and the promise of Woodstock ended w/a SICKENING thud this past December at a Stones concert at Altamont in northern California. The war was still raging. The Weathermen blew up a building in the village…the one they lived in. The Chicago Seven got off, but Timothy Leary didn’t…for a change. He got ten years for possession of two roaches! On TV the top shows were Marcus Welby, Flip Wilson and Gunsmoke. TV was kind of a drag. MASH had just opened at the theaters but truth was we still all came together around the music, and it was awesome. The Beatles, said Let It Be, and we all knew the end was near. In New York 1970 the place to be was Greenwich Village. The weekends found most of us on 2nd Ave and 6th. That was Bill Grahams Fillmore East. The year had started out with Jimi Hendrix and a band of Gypsies on New Years Eve. In March alone there was Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Steve Miller Band, Miles Davis, BB King, The Moody Blues…and then there was the last weekend of March the 27th and 28th, Easter Weekend.. It was Joe Cocker, man he’d blew us away at Woodstock last summer, and now he was playing with Leon Russell with a little help from their friends. A half-century later, the mother of all music festivals still resonates ifty years after the fact, it still resonates with us. Tucked up in the Catskill Mountains, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair — promoted as “An Aquarian Exposition, Three Days of Peace and Music,” but known to one and all as simply Woodstock — took place in 1969 over three-plus days. From Friday, Aug. 15, through the morning of Monday, Aug. 18, dairy farmer Max Yasgur’s 600- acre parcel of land in Bethel, New York — forever immortalized in Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (ironically, she wasn’t at the event itself) — became the epicenter of the music and cultural universe, a haven for 400,000-plus hippies, bohemians, music lovers and mem- bers of the counterculture. It began when folkie Richie Havens began strumming his gui- tar, kicking off the festival with Paul Gerry/Bethel Woods Collection “From the Prison.” Thirty-two more acts, about 66 hours and several rainstorms later, it ended when guitar god Jimi Hendrix capped off a stellar set with his rendition of “Hey Joe.” Thousands of cars were left stranded for miles and miles en route to the venue as concertgo- ers walked to their destination. Tickets for the festival were $18, but many attendees got in for free when the crowd more than tripled what organizers had anticipated. For Immediate Release Tedeschi Trucks Band Pays Tribute to Joe Cocker with Leon Russell and original Mad Dogs & Englishmen members Plus Special Guests at Lockn’ Festival September 16, 2015 - - Tedeschi Trucks Band paid tribute to the late Joe Cocker by re-creating the legendary 1970 Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour with Leon Russell at this past weekend’s Lockn’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia. Welcoming original Mad Dogs & Englishmen members as well as special friends, Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by guitarist Derek Trucks and singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, headlined a Friday evening set dedicated to the influential rock and soul collective that featured a historic gathering of guests Chris Leon Russell, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Claudia Lennear Robinson, Dave Mason, John Bell, Warren Haynes and Anders Osborne alongside renowned percussionist Chuck Blackwell, keyboardist Chris Stainton and Leon Russell himself. In addition to the 11-member power of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s dual drummers and three-piece horn Levine Stuart credit: section, the packed stage included Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear and Pamela Polland alternating lead and background vocal performances, joined by other Mad Dogs alumni Chris Robinson, Susan Tedeschi Bobby Torres on percussion and Bobby Jones, Matthew Moore and Daniel Moore on vocals. Even original tour photographer Linda Wolf was on hand to capture the inspired 100-minute tribute, with the expanded congregation of musicians performing a slew of classics selected from the Mad Dogs film and live double album. SASS JORDAN Sass Jordan is an omnivore. And we’re not just talking about music. The U.K.-born, Montréal-raised Juno winner has a knack for taking whatever she comes across— provocative theater, crowd-pleasing television, legendary rock outfits and her own chameleonic solo work—and stamping it with pure cool. And nowhere is that stamp more vividly soulful than her latest full-length, From Dusk Til Dawn, a spirited collection of pop, soul and rock that will keep fans humming along for the duration of that title and then some.
