The Life and Work of Bob Dylan
The Life and Work of Bob Dylan Deep within the walls of La Salle University's Connelly Library, a voice waits to be studied. Bob Dylan, the rock-and-roll poet/legend/icon, is the subject of a one-of-a-kind archive in the form of books, scholarly papers, doctoral dissertations, compact discs, records, tapes, videos, and even t- shirts and ticket stubs. "Academic institutions traditionally haven't collected the works and biographical material of Bob Dylan or, for that matter, any other contemporary 'popular music' artists," said La Salle's Library and Special Collections Director John Baky. "Academic libraries and rare book collections are by their nature conservative and therefore cautious in collecting contemporary works, and fearful of investing in arcane subjects that might prove to be transient." Baky believes that academic libraries should provide the resources necessary for studying contemporary phenomena when they are of unavoidable influence within the culture. Bob Dylan and what he represents exemplify this sort of phenomenon, Baky said. Dylan, known initially for his protest music of the era, became not only an icon among the anti-Vietnam war movement, but also a rock-and-roll innovator, injecting his lyrics with poignant social commentary and raising the bar of the literary trope in rock music. "Besides our own La Salle Students, there is an important amount of interlibrary loan activity revolving around the Dylan Collection," Baky said. The collection contains every album Dylan has released in their various forms--vinyl, cassette, or compact disc--and is consistently updated. There are more than two dozen "bootleg" vinyl records alone. -
News Archive - New Saturday Concert Series Begins in January
Oakland University - News Archive - New Saturday concert series begins in January Wednesday, December 17, 2003 New Saturday concert series begins in January By Kalee Iacoangeli, OU Student Writer Beginning in January, Residence Hall Programming will offer a new Saturday concert series with free concerts for all OU students throughout the winter semester. The new series kicks off Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. when OU welcomes back the musical comedy group J Chris Newberg and the Rest, who previously opened for Friday Night Live guest Dustin Diamond on Oct. 17. On Jan. 31, Tamara Bedricky, a recent OU graduate who has performed in clubs and at colleges from Detroit to Los Angeles, will perform. The series then ends for the semester on March 27 with singer/songwriter/guitarist Jason LeVasseur. J Chris Newberg and the Rest Newberg began adding comedy to his musical shows while on the road with Detroit rock band, the Vudu Hippies. Whenever a delay or technical problem interrupted the band’s performance, he would keep the crowds entertained with his on-the-spot songs, commonly using audience members’ lives as his lyrical inspiration. Making his debut in September 2000, Newberg’s talent of turning everyday situations into improvisational, acoustic guitar tunes has captured audiences from all across the country. Along with four CD’s, Newberg’s résumé includes opening for two sold-out Counting Crows and Oasis shows, opening up for Grand Funk Railroad, and playing alongside Fuel at L.A.’s Viper Room. Tamara Bedricky Bedricky has performed in New York’s Central Park alongside recording artist Michelle Branch, was chosen as one of the five up-and-coming female artists in the country in the Pantene Pro-Voice music competition, and performed at the 2003 Detroit Music Awards. -

CNHI Woodstock 20190814
A half-century later, the mother of all music festivals still resonates ifty years after the fact, it still resonates with us. Tucked up in the Catskill Mountains, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair — promoted as “An Aquarian Exposition, Three Days of Peace and Music,” but known to one and all as simply Woodstock — took place in 1969 over three-plus days. From Friday, Aug. 15, through the morning of Monday, Aug. 18, dairy farmer Max Yasgur’s 600- acre parcel of land in Bethel, New York — forever immortalized in Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (ironically, she wasn’t at the event itself) — became the epicenter of the music and cultural universe, a haven for 400,000-plus hippies, bohemians, music lovers and mem- bers of the counterculture. It began when folkie Richie Havens began strumming his gui- tar, kicking off the festival with Paul Gerry/Bethel Woods Collection “From the Prison.” Thirty-two more acts, about 66 hours and several rainstorms later, it ended when guitar god Jimi Hendrix capped off a stellar set with his rendition of “Hey Joe.” Thousands of cars were left stranded for miles and miles en route to the venue as concertgo- ers walked to their destination. Tickets for the festival were $18, but many attendees got in for free when the crowd more than tripled what organizers had anticipated. Dallas Taylor, the drummer for supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (playing just its second-ever show), asked the helicopter pilot James Sarles/Bethel Woods Collection James Sarles/Bethel Woods Collection flying him to the event what body of More than 400,000 people descended on a dairy farm in Bethel, N.Y., for the concert held 50 years ago. -

Spanning four decades, The Ozone Rangers have survived disco, big hair, techno- pop, and pretty boys with wispy voices. Relying on a groove of bluesy bass and drum rhythms sprinkled with some tasty Southern licks, the Ozone recipe has stood the test of time like a bottle of Jack Daniels on a woodshed shelf. True road warriors, stickers from towns north of Quebec, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, adorn Ozone road cases. Their first album, “Long Way To Rock And Roll”, was released in 1983 The band has opened for blues legend, Willie Dixon, Southern rockers Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, and the Outlaws, even alternative notables, Alice In Chains. The boys have played in Tampa, on tour with the ZZ Top Eliminator car, done MTV’s Spring Break in Daytona, even a month of Pennsylvania prison concerts. The Ozone resume includes Daytona Bike Week, the Harrisburg, PA State Rights Rally, New Castle PA’s Thunder In The Cascades, Hazen, numerous New York and PA bike club events, Apple Harley Davidson, in Altoona, Jamestown H.D., Gowanda Harley Davidson’s open houses, Horsepower HD in Williamsport, The PA State H.O.G. Rally, along with the original Harley Hollywood Happening. Bob Muhlbauer, the original Ranger, plays guitar and does vocals. The Wallflowers "Exit Wounds" Press Release
THE WALLFLOWERS RETURN WITH EXIT WOUNDS JULY 9th VIA NEW WEST RECORDS FIRST ALBUM IN NEARLY A DECADE PRODUCED BY BUTCH WALKER AND FEATURES SHELBY LYNNE PERFORM FIRST SINGLE “ROOTS AND WINGS” ON JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE! LAST NIGHT ANNOUNCE 53-DATE ARENA TOUR LAUNCHING JULY 16th The Wallflowers will release Exit Wounds on July 9th via New West Records. The 10-song set is their first album in nearly a decade and was produced by Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, Weezer). Exit Wounds was mixed by Chris Dugan (Green Day) and features the acclaimed singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne on four songs. While it’s been nearly a decade since we’ve heard from the group with whom Jakob Dylan first made his mark, he always knew they’d return. “The Wallflowers is much of my life’s work,” he says simply. The much-anticipated record finds the band’s signature sound — lean, potent and eminently entrancing — intact. The Wallflowers announced their return with a live performance of the first single “Roots and Wings” last night on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! See the performance HERE. For the past 30 years, The Wallflowers have stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands — a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s Bringing Down the Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s Glad All Over. -

The 60’s and the promise of Woodstock ended w/a SICKENING thud this past December at a Stones concert at Altamont in northern California. The war was still raging. The Weathermen blew up a building in the village…the one they lived in. The Chicago Seven got off, but Timothy Leary didn’t…for a change. He got ten years for possession of two roaches! On TV the top shows were Marcus Welby, Flip Wilson and Gunsmoke. TV was kind of a drag. MASH had just opened at the theaters but truth was we still all came together around the music, and it was awesome. The Beatles, said Let It Be, and we all knew the end was near. In New York 1970 the place to be was Greenwich Village. The weekends found most of us on 2nd Ave and 6th. That was Bill Grahams Fillmore East. The year had started out with Jimi Hendrix and a band of Gypsies on New Years Eve. In March alone there was Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Steve Miller Band, Miles Davis, BB King, The Moody Blues…and then there was the last weekend of March the 27th and 28th, Easter Weekend.
