Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 31.2 (December 2009): 41–56 ISSN 0210-6124 Tell-Tale Signs - Edgar Allan Poe and Bob Dylan: Towards a Model of Intertextuality Christopher Rollason Metz, France [email protected] This article shows how the poetry and prose of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) cast a long shadow over the work of America’s greatest living songwriter, Bob Dylan (1941-). The work of both artists straddles the dividing-line between ‘high’ and ‘mass’ culture by pertaining to both: read through Poe, Dylan’s work may be seen as a significant manifestation of American Gothic. It is further suggested, in the context of nineteenth- century and contemporary debates on alleged ‘plagiarism’, that the textual strategy of ‘embedded’ quotation, as employed by both Poe and Dylan, points up the need today for an open and inclusive model of intertextuality. Ambos artistas se ubican en una encrucijada entre la cultura ‘de elite’ y la ‘de masas’, puesto que la obra de cada uno se sitúa en ambos dominios a la vez: leída a través de Poe, la obra dylaniana aparece como una importante manifestación del gótico norteamericano. Se plantea igualmente la hipótesis de que, en el marco de los debates, tanto decimonónicos como contemporáneos, sobre el supuesto ‘plagio’, la estrategia textual, empleada tanto por Poe como por Dylan, de la cita ‘encajada’ señala la necesidad urgente de plantear un modelo abierto y global de la intertextualidad.

Palen The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor David Pritchard This study examines the impact that the non-profit organization Farm Aid has had on the farming industry, policy, and the concert realm known as charity rock. This study also examines how the organization has maintained its longevity. By conducting an evaluation on Farm Aid and its history, the organization’s messaging and means to communicate, a detailed analysis of the past media coverage on Farm Aid from 1985-2010, and a phone interview with Executive Director Carolyn Mugar, I have determined that Farm Aid’s impact is complex and not clear.

Russian Red’s singer, Lourdes Hernández, has an exceptional voice and an innate ability to communicate and captivate a variety of audiences. She broke through the music scene in 2008 and became THE indie phenomenon with her debut album I Love Your Glasses (achieving a Gold record in Spain) and soon began performing on the main Spanish stages (Primavera Sound Festival, FIB, Jazzaldia, among many others), and reaching audiences in the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Costa Rica, Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc. In 2011 she released her second LP, Fuerteventura (with Sony Music) thus taking a big leap forward in her career. Produced by Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, David Byrne, etc.) and recorded with Stevie Jackson, Bob Kildea and Richard Colburn from Belle & Sebastian, Fuerteventura debuted at #2 on the topselling albums charts in Spain, where it stood for over 39 weeks, consolidating her position as one of the most outstanding and international Spanish artists.
