PREPARING FOR iSC MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCCER TOURNAMENT!
Written by Emma and Kate. (G6)
This year, YHIS will host the iSC Middle School Soccer Tournament from November 2-3. I am a new middle schooler and also a team member of the girls Middle School Soccer Team. It is about four weeks to the start of the tournament and I would like to share with you how the team is preparing for the tournament.
Since Monday, August 20, my team members and I have been practicing hard for the tournament together with our coaches, Mrs. Bond and Mrs. Van Santen. The soccer practice starts at 3:20 and ends at 4:45. As a team member, our focus is to build unity and improve our skills. Every practice, we meet in the café and put on our soccer attire such as soccer shoes, shin guard, long sock`s and tied hair. After a warm-up exercise, we run four to five laps. We practice kicking, passing and dribbling the ball. Sometimes, I would even practice soccer over the weekend to improve my skills.
The members of the team are Molly from 9th grade, Faith from 7th grade and Kate and Emma from 6th grade. Our favorite part is running and stretching and our least favorite part is getting tired.

MOVIE REVIEW: MOANA
Written by Lisa (G6)
This movie is called Moana. There are many characters in Moana. There is Maui, Hei Hei the rooster, and Gramma Tala. Moana is a teenage girl who lives on an island with her parents. Her dad forced her to be the next chief on the island, but Moana refused. Later she explained everything by singing a song called “How Far I’ll Go”. This is a very famous song that many people like to sing in their spare time. Moana didn’t want to be the next chief on the island. She was kind of sad, but she didn’t listen to her father and followed her heart. She always wanted to go near the water, but her dad always saw her and brought her away. Her father’s friend died because he went sailing on the water. Maui is a demi-god of the wind and sea. He stole the heart of an island, the heart of the mother of nature, because he wanted all the power to himself. Maui, Moana, and Hei Hei go on an exciting adventure in the movie Moana.

MUSIC REVIEW: Sunmi is back! (Kpop)
Written by Dorothy (G6)
A female singer, called Sunmi, came back with a song called ‘Siren'. Before she debuted as a solo artist, she was one of the members of Wonder Girls. As a solo artist, Sunmi debuted on August 22, 2013 with a song called ’24 Hours Is Not Enough'. Until now, there are five songs that she has sung. On September 4th, a song called ‘Siren’ came out. When her song came out, it was first place on the music chart. ‘Siren’ is a song that connects with ‘Gashina’ and ‘Heroine’. The movie is connected to ‘Heroine’. The movie is about Sunmi warning herself to not do the same thing as she has done in the past. Also, some parts of the song’s ideas are from a Greek story taken from Greek and Roman mythology. For her song, 'Siren', Sunmi wrote some parts of the lyrics. She also gave some ideas for her song.

LEARNING OUTCOME: Connection
Did you know?
Written by Dorothy (G6)
Our school, Yantai Huasheng International School (YHIS), supplies a transformative holistic education with a global mindset to develop dynamic individuals of truth, integrity, and excellence who positively influence society. We will learn nine outcomes in this semester. The first outcome that we learned was ‘Connection’.
YHIS Weekly Newsletter is available every Thursday.
Scan the QR below for more school news.
For Connection, we learned about valuing people by communicating, language learning, and understanding other countries' cultures. If we want to value people, we can talk to each other to know their language and culture. Also, we can create a good relationship with other countries’ people.
Connection is bringing people together.
Mrs. Shirley Goh
Connection means investing and getting to know someone else.

2. What’s your goal for this year?
Mr. Goh: That's a great question! I'm glad you asked this. As shared with the parents during Open House in August and also at the PTO Welcome Tea last week, the school has created a strategic roadmap, which captures and communicates the school’s strategy and anticipated outcomes within the time frame.
My goal for the year is to create a vibrant learning community, by building a strong academic program, developing student leadership, growing staff professionally, building strong systems as well as engaging the community. These goals will lead to us fulfilling our school's vision of raising world class servant leaders in every vocation.
Mr. Samuel Goh, Head Principal
3. How will you achieve that goal?
5. What are three advantages and
disadvantages of our school?
Mr. Goh: In achieving the goals, the school improvement plan provides comprehensive information on the timelines, indicators, and owners. Each goal is slightly different in how it will be achieved, but I am grateful for the support of the community partners, school board, parents, staff and students in making YHIS the place to be in Yantai. With all of us working together to make this happen, I am confident that YHIS will be the best environment for all.
Mr. Goh: I would say this is more about our points of difference and what are our opportunities for growth. There's so much that I can share with you why an international student should choose YHIS. However, if it's just three, here's my thought:
Three strengths:
4. Why did you choose YHIS?
1. A robust iSC system of schools with a proven track record and global partnership that provides varied opportunities for secondary students to participate, and compete in student leadership, MUN, athletics, Science Fair, fine arts, and more.
Mr. Goh: I choose YHIS because of the many opportunities that the school has. Being able to serve the international community in Yantai is exciting. Yantai is also a lovely city to live.
NEWSPAPER CLUB
2. Inspiring teachers, extraordinary care. Our teachers have come across the world just to be here in YHIS. They have a great passion for students and learning. They are more than just educators – they are mentors, coaches, and more.
(TEAM A)
Student Editors: Shaina (G11), Neo K. (G11), Cathy L. (G9).
Writers and Reviewers: Lisa (G6), Emma (G6), Dorothy (G6), Kate (G6), and Faith (G7)
Teacher sponsors: Mrs. Shirley Goh, Ms. Jessica Winston and Ms. Lindsey Varble
3. Broad-based International Experience that offers students varied opportunities, choices, and possibilities.
Opportunities for growth:
I would love to be able to grow the number of students in high school so that we can offer more programs in the school. Because we are a relatively new school, we need to establish our reputation both in the city and with universities around the world.
Thank you, Mr. Goh. Let’s welcome Mr. Goh!
