In extreme instances, by the time a person was eighty, he or she could have been a citizen of up to eight countries without ever leaving his or her hometown. Slovakia in Europe, Real and Symbolic Geography A major concept and understanding that has been absent in almost all writing about Central Europe in English is the term “Central Europe” itself. It is sometimes taken to be an old German invention designed to justify the expansionist concept of Lebensraum, or it is discussed as an invention of Czech émigré author Milan Kundera, especially in his essay “The Tragedy of Central Europe.”1 Yet, a character in the German film The Edukators (Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei; dir. Heinz Weingartner, 2004) says at one point, quite matter-of-factly, “here in Central Europe.” It is revealing that the English subtitles translated it merely as “here in Europe” for American audiences. Stripped of any Kundera-esque connotations, Central Europe has long been a simple geographic concept, like the Midwest in the United States.

The use of natural rock material in the area of the Western Carpathians is always bound on specifics of the regional - geological development of Slovakia. Different rock formation conditions and subsequent geological evolution caused considerable regional differentiation of rock masses. Major faulting of rocks during the folded-fault tectonics caused rather poor deposits on building and decorative stone in Slovakia. The rock masses of Western Carpathians provide stones which are of different natural and technical characteristics and different manner of utilization. Introduction The aim of this paper is to give an overview of most used rocks with the examples of their application on historical monuments of Slovakia. Another part of the contribution is to demonstrate petrophysical and material-technical characteristics of selected types of mentioned rocks. Rocks used in various forms of building and decoration stone can be divided into 5 basic groups: A. Consolidated clastic (granular) sediments – sandstone, conglomerate, breccia, quartzite, arkose, graywacke. B. Carbonate rocks - travertine, limestone, marble. C. Effusive volcanic rocks – rhyolite, andesite, basalt, quartz porphyre, melaphyre, diabase and their tuffs. D. Intrusive rocks - granites, granodiorites, diorites, syenites, gabbros.

Bratislava www.hrc.sk Cisár Ferdinand III. Ako a prečo vznikla uvedená publikácia? Najprv pár slov ako vznikla táto publikácia: V našej rodine sa tradovalo, že rodina Trstenská má zemiansky pôvod. V niek- torých historických publikácia som sa napríklad dočítal, že z rodiny Trstenských sa v Trstenej volil šoltís. Paradoxom je, že skutočne ucelenú informáciu som našiel o rodine Trstenských až v New Yorku. V roku 1999 sme s manželkou Jaroslavou rod. Valáškovou navštívili Ellis Island v New Yorku, kde v bývalom prístave je múzeum prisťaho- valectva. Cez tento prístav pricestovali do USA milióny prisťahovalcov z celého sveta. Náhoda chcela, že som sa pristavil pri hrubom zväzku, ktorý obsahoval rôzne priezviská. Organizácia s názvom Mária Orthová - Historical Research Centrum tu zhromažďuje pôvod a históriu priezvísk prisťahovalcov, ktorí do USA prešli uve- deným prístavom. Vyhľadal som si priezvisko Trstenský, ale také som tam nenašiel. Následne som si však všimol priezvisko Trsztyenszky. Uvedené priezvisko som si vyťukal v počí- tači, ktorý sa nachádzal vedľa uvedeného zväzku priezvísk. A na obrazovke sa mi objavil text o tom, že je to priezvisko z Horného Uhorska atď. Uvedenú informáciu mi za poplatok vytlačili a potvrdili. Okrem iného som sa dozvedel, že Ferdinand III v roku 1638 udelil Andrejovi (Andreas) Trstenskému, jeho potomkom a jeho súrodencom šľachtické práva s právom používať erb.
