Na tym mniemaniu opiera si ę do ść zba- nalizowana rozpoznawalno ść tej konwencji. Uto żsamienie to jest na tyle wyraziste, że science fiction niestety funkcjonuje czasem jako ta mniej odpowiedzialna, frywolna siostra futurologii. Rela- cje mi ędzy tymi dwoma zjawiskami maj ą dług ą i interesuj ącą histori ę, ale, gdyby nie czynnik science skonfrontowany z fiction w literackiej konwencji, historia ta nie byłaby nawet w połowie tak ciekawa. Zanim fantastyka naukowa zaczynała zyskiwa ć odr ębno ść 1, wypełniała cz ęś ciowo funkcje protofuturologiczne. Owszem, fik- cjonalno ść gwarantuje odr ębno ść konwencji fantastycznonauko- wej, ale wci ąż powraca potrzeba jej mimetyzacji, a nawet udo- wodnienia praktycznej przydatno ści, dzi ęki której mogłaby si ę ona oddali ć od oskar żeń o „pust ą” gr ę wyobra źni pozbawion ą real- nych odniesie ń. Futurologia prze żywała zreszt ą podobne rozterki jako nauka badaj ąca co ś, co (jeszcze?) nie istnieje. Z pewno ści ą jednak obecnie zbli żaj ą si ę do siebie, gdy – z jednej strony – science fiction wyposa żana jest w wymiar ideologiczny, alego- ryczny lub podkre śla si ę jej ekstrapolacyjn ą metodologi ę budo- wania fikcyjnych światów, a – z drugiej strony – futurologia od- chodzi od prognostyki na rzecz badania hipotetycznych scenariu- szy rozwoju stanu rzeczy oraz wyobra żeń przyszło ści, tak że tych fantastycznych 3. Futurystyczno ść 4 nie jest bynajmniej jedynym aspektem temporalno ści fantastyki naukowej. Nie jest bodaj nawet najcie- kawszym. Istota i odr ębno ść tej konwencji nie ogranicza si ę bo- wiem do tematyki, si ęga gł ębiej – organizuje na swój własny sposób ludzkie do świadczenie czasu jako takiego. W pewnych aspektach jej metodologia i cele s ą podobne do tych znanych z realizmu, wliczywszy wszelkie stany po średnie i niuanse. W innych jednak rzuca wyzwanie mechanizmom fikcjonalno- -narracyjnym opisywanym przez poetyk ę zainteresowan ą głównie fikcj ą „minimaln ą”5 – w przybli żeniu realistyczn ą. Najpełniejsz ą demonstracj ą tych mo żliwo ści regulowania rozumienia są utwory po świ ęcone podró ży w czasie, a nawet te wykorzystujące owe podró że tylko instrumentalnie. W ramach tej wyobra źni czas podlega konceptuali- zacji, a autorzy potrafi ą si ę do tej konceptualizacji odnosi ć, defi- niuj ąc poj ęcie czasu, wyznaczaj ąc jego u żyteczno ść i zakres 7. Wyobra źnia temporalna okre ślana jest tak że przez wychylenia w kierunku innych typów wyobra źni i aktywno ści: w kierunku my ślenia futurystycznego, w kierunku wyobra źni technologicznej wykorzystuj ącej dyskurs naukowy (w ramach definicji science fiction , przede wszystkim w naukowym, ale równie ż pseudonau- kowym wariancie), w kierunku my ślenia hipotetycznego tak na- ukowego, jak tego realizuj ącego si ę w fikcji implikowanej przez czynnik fiction , w hybrydycznej definicji konwencji SF. Ze wzgl ędu na współobecno ść trzech, cz ęś ciowo pokrywaj ą- cych si ę, składowych: retorycznej 8, społecznej oraz konwencjo- 6 „Wyobra źnia” to poj ęcie o bogatej historii i niezwykłej por ęczno ści, bywa uzupełniane wieloma dookre ślaniami. Wyobra źnia bywa: „społeczna”, „zbiorowa”, „romantyczna”, „naukowa” itp. Co najistotniejsze, sama w sobie posiada wymiar temporalny, w „minimalnym” wariancie definio- wana jest bowiem jako „zdolno ść do przewidywania, uzupełniania, odtwa- rzania i przedstawiania sobie czego ś dot ąd nie widzianego”, zdolno ść ta „dotyczy przeszło ści i przyszło ści” – B. He is the author of thirteen acclaimed books and a columnist for the New York Times. Zimmer first be- gan writing about science at Discover, where he served for five years as a senior editor, and has gone on to write hundreds of features for magazines including The Atlantic, The New York Times Magazine, Time, National Geographic, and Scientific American. He has also served as a scientific editor for television documentaries, consulted on museum exhibits, and contributed his writing to major science web sites. Zimmer has earned numerous honors for his work. In 2007 he won the National Academies Communication Award, and he has won the American Association for the Advancement of Sci- ences Science Journalism Award three times. In 2015, Zimmer won the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers, and in 2016, he won the Stephen Jay Gould Prize, awarded by the Society for the Study of Evolution. In 2018, Zimmer’s book She Has Her Mother’s Laugh was named by Publisher’s Weekly one of the ten best books of the year. The Guardian named it the best science book of 2018 and The New York Times Book Review chose it as a Notable Book of the Year. By Dr. Harvey Karp From infants to adults, everyone dreams. Psychologist David Foulkes studies children (from tots to teens) to bring the secrets of their dreams to the light of day. In his lab, he lets kids fall asleep and then wakes them three times a night—sometimes in REM and sometimes in NREM—and asks them to describe what they recall. Foulkes’ findings are surprising…in how unsurprising they are. Basically, little kids have little dreams. But exactly what kids see while dreaming depends on their age. As children develop and grow, their dreams do too. Toddler dreams are usually just snapshots, looking much more like a slide show than a movie when compared to the dreams of adults. They heavily feature animals and other familiar sights, like images of people eating. According to Foulkes, “Children’s dream life…seems to be similar to their waking imagination and narration,” he explains in his study, Children’s Dreaming and the Development of Consciousness. “Animals carry human concerns and readily become objects of identification.” iii Understandably, dreams can confuse small kids.

STRING THEORY AND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH NATURE: THE CONVERGENCE OF SCIENCE, CURRICULUM THEORY, AND THE ENVIRONMENT by VIRGINIA THERESE BENNETT (Under the Direction of John A. Weaver) ABSTRACT Curriculum Theory affords us the opportunity to examine education from a multitude of directions. This work takes advantage of that opportunity to explore the relationships between science, nature, and curriculum using string theory and our ideas about the environment as a backdrop. Both the energy and multiple possibilities created by strings and the rich history leading up to the theory help to illustrate the many opportunities we have to advance discussions in alternative ways of looking at science. By considering the multiple dimensions inherent in string theory as multiple pathways and interweaving metaphors from Deleuze and Guattari, Michel Serres, and Donna Haraway, our approach to environmental issues and environmental education allow us to include alternative ways of looking at the world.
